    Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options.     Interview from Guitar World Magazine: ROB ARNOLD of Chimaira GW: What inspired you to play guitar? RA: A buddy of mine had just gotten an electric guitar and an amp. I was super stoked about how good it could sound with a little distortion and a whammy bar. Then I started seeing some of my idols and the things they were doing with a guitar on MTV, and I was immediately hooked. I told my mom that I needed a guitar. Sadly, but not unfortunately, she got me an acoustic. GW: What was your first guitar? RA: After the Acoustic, my first "real" guitar was a neon-yellow Ibanez. It came with a little Peavey combo for about 400 hundred bucks. My dad thought I was crazy; he was pushing me toward a more mildly colored sunburst Fender, but I wasn't havin' it. A flashy guitar hero movement was underway, and a flashy looking guitar seemed the way to become a part of it. GW: What was the first song you learned? RA: It was either Metallica's " To Live or To Die" or Megadeath's "Symphony of Destruction." Both Songs have monster riffs that greatly appealed to my young ears. GW: Do you remember your first gig? RA: I was about Fifteen years old, and my band at the time scored a gig at a "musicians night" show. We were told to arrive with our gear; all of the other bands would play on our equipment, and we'd close the show. When about five or six hundred people showed up, we gave ourselves a pat on the back, thinking it was due to all the flyering and promoting we'd done for the show.

    Metal Madness: An Interview with Kingsmen Tanner Guimond Welcome to Metal Madness my fellow metalheads, covering all things metal, metalcore, deathcore and hardcore in the Providence area. I recently had the privilege of talking to Kingsmen, one of Providence’s premier melodic deathcore acts. This five-piece is made up of former members of Fortune Favors the Brave and Scriptures. The band has been around since 2016, and since its inception, Kingsmen have garnered a large fanbase and signed with Extreme Management Group, known for managing such acts as Suffocation and Rings of Saturn. If you’re into crushing breakdowns, searing melodic vocals and overall death-core madness, this is the band for you. What you notice at a Kingsmen show, apart from the raw talent and stage presence, is that for a band that hasn’t been around for a long time, they play like a seasoned band that’s been on the road for years. That comes from the dedication that the band has to their art. I caught up with lead singer Tanner Guimond Sunday night at Fete Musical hall where the band was headlining a show. Erik Nivison (Motif): How did you get together? Tanner Guimond: It all kinda happened four or five years ago. So Dylan Robertson and I were in Fortune Favors the Brave, and Frank, Adam and Tim were in a band called Scriptures. We did a couple of shows together during a weekender run, it was kinda like after going out we realized we had some chemistry. After those bands fell apart Tim (lucier guitar) reached out to me and we brought Dylan in and wrote a few songs.

    Citizen Advisory Panel on Merriweather Post Pavilion Final Report Introduction On August 12, 2004, County Executive Jim Robey signed Executive Order No. 2004-03 (attached as Appendix 1), which appointed 16 leaders of the business and arts communities in Howard County to serve on the Merriweather Citizens Advisory Panel (the Panel). He asked the Panel to advise him on whether Howard County (the County) should purchase Merriweather Post Pavilion from The Rouse Company (now General Growth Properties (GGP)), which had announced that Merriweather was for sale provided that the purchaser agrees to meet certain provisions. He asked the Panel to answer five questions: 1. Is there a public service purpose for Howard County to purchase Merriweather Post Pavilion? 2. If there is a public service purpose for the County to purchase Merriweather, what should be the primary purpose of the facility (e.g., a concert venue, an all-purpose arts facility, etc.), what other activities should be permitted and what organizations should have access? 3. Does Merriweather need to be renovated, and if so what type and scope of renovation would be necessary for it to most successfully and effectively achieve the determined primary purpose? 4.
