Johnston said. The assistant sheriff said the school locked its doors, and students and staff “sheltered in place” until deputies ushered them onto a school bus and led it to safety under heavy guard. Johnston said authorities believe they know the identity of the shooter but declined to release his name pending fur- ther investigation. He appears to have fired a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns at seven locations, authorities said. The shooter initially stole a neighbor’s truck and then car- jacked a second vehicle before two deputies exchanged gun- fire with him, Johnston said. No officers were hurt. Salvador Tello said the gun- man fired at a truck in front of him as he went to drop off his three children at school. Tello said he was about three blocks from the school when bullets made “big holes” in the truck. He said he forced his chil- dren to duck down, slammed his vehicle into reverse and headed to the children’s grandmother’s house. “I put my kids down and put my truck in reverse and went out,” he said. “I don’t believe it, because I wake up, take my kids, feed them cereal and put them in the truck and say, ‘Let’s go to school like a nor- mal day.”’ On the way, he said he saw an apparent gunshot victim and police at another scene. The rural subdivision is described on its website as a “quiet private country com- munity” where “the people are friendly and the pace is relaxed.” The homeowner association’s website says there are 2,016 lots in the community and 1,346 voting members. William M. Case January 16, 1930 – November 12, 2017 William M. "Bill" Case age 87, of Clovis, NM, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017, at his home. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 16, 2017, at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton, with Military Hon- ors. Burial will be held at Santa Fe National Ceme- tery. He was born January 16, 1930, joining the USAF mili- tary band at an early age and serving in Japan where he met the love of his life, Ren. They married Novem- ber 30, 1950, being one of the first married couples al- lowed to return to the United States, thanks to numerous letters to his Oklahoma State Representative. They would celebrate their 67th wed- ding anniversary later this month. He retired as a SMSgt from the USAF after 26 years of service and opened his car lot, Bill Case Auto. He also obtained his REALTORs li- cense and began investing in real estate. And, after many wedding anniversary visits to Branson, Missouri; he pur- chased, renovated, and opened the State Music Theatre in 1995 and featured the Big Band Sounds of the Velvetones, as well as the classics, standards and pop music of the Bill Case Combo. He searched, sought and showcased local talent and enjoyed playing with such talented musicians. As his friend Tommy Williams said, He was so dedicated to his music and such an accomplished clarinet and saxo- phone player. He played with just about every musician in Clovis at one time or another. At times he played seven nights a week. He loved his music and played such a vari- ety. Tuff was his opening song. With the dedication of his son, Jim, he was able to accomplish all of his life's dreams and goals. Survivors include: his wife, Ren Case of the home; two sons, James “Jim” Case and John “Jack” Case; daughters, Janet (Donald) Case-Young and Judy (Kirk) Case-Kelley; brother, Bob (Mavis) Case; and four grandchildren; Ren Ishii, Josh (Amanda) Case, Matthew (Anna) Ishii, and Lyle Case; and great-granddaughter Brianna. He was preceded in death by his parents; Lyle Case and Lila Moles, and his sister, Jeanne. The family thanks all of the caregivers, friends, and fellow musicians who richly blessed Bills life.
