S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 21ST JULY 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Hull Dockers for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. Hull are currently in mid table having won seven of the sixteen games they have played. We came away with the points in the away game at Hull Dockers in April with a 16 – 42 victory so hopefully we can repeat the feat to maintain our promotion hopes. Top of the Division Two try scoring charts is Hull’s Craig Cook with 15 touchdowns closely followed by our own Ben Selby with 14 and Liam Copland topping the points chart with 154 from 9 tries and 59 goals. A great win last week at a hostile East Leeds to keep our position at the top of the table although we cannot afford any more setbacks like in the last home game against Crosfields. This is our last home game until September but I am sure the players would appreciate your support at West Bowling (4th August), Saddleworth (11th August) and Drighlington (18th August). Keep saying this but hopefully by the time you read this the irrigation system will either be ready or just about there. Congratulations to the Ladies team on reaching the Challenge Shield final after defeating Brighouse 66 – 4 last Sunday. They will play Bradford Bulls at Warrington on 4th August, 1.00pm. This is the curtain raiser to the Ladies Challenge Cup final between Cas Tigers and Leeds Rhinos. Get along and cheer our lasses on! A date for your diary is Sunday 26th August for a cricket match and BBQ to raise money for the injury fund. Please see Brian if you can offer assistance. There were some cracking performances, most notably perhaps by Halton Farnworth Hornets, who overcame Hunslet Warriors in the Under 16s decider despite having only thirteen players. The Under 14s final, which was won convincingly by Siddal, was marred by a neck injury to West Hull fullback Charlie Barker. I’m writing these notes early on Monday morning and fervently hope, along with everyone else, that Charlie will be ok. Blackbrook, meanwhile, accounted for Leigh Miners Rangers at Under 18s in the most closely contested of the three games. I thought that standards in this match were particularly high and I’d like to think that those of the victorious side that don’t turn professional will go on to play for Blackbrook’s Open Age team, which had to pull out of the Kingstone Press National Conference League earlier this year. If they do there’s surely no reason why the St Helens outfit shouldn’t not only return to the NCL, but prosper. An abiding memory of the day, though, came after play had finished. I’d just wrapped up filing copy on the games, and on matches elsewhere, to League Express when a lady, wandering past the press box, stopped for a chat. She was from St Helens, it turned out, and she revealed that it was her first visit to Post Office Road for many years, and that she was very impressed. I couldn’t blame her. The LD Nutrition Stadium – as we should call it really, in deference to genuinely supportive and worthy sponsors - is not only a very tidy ground, it’s also a genuine Rugby League arena. Although just about everything is relatively new, other than the terracing at the lower end of the ground, it doesn’t feel very different to the famous Post Office Road of old. In fact the folk-memory of great deeds by Featherstone Rovers players of yesteryear – and of their respective opponents – is palpable. Another fine stadium, in much the same way and not even taking into consideration a similarly pronounced slope, is Mount Pleasant, Batley, which has literally been rebuilt from a pile of rubble in the late 1980s into a grand ground. I think such as Post Office Road and Mount Pleasant are perfectly suited to Rugby League, with spectators almost on top of the players and, perhaps crucially, not being too large. Castleford’s Mend-A-Hose Jungle at Wheldon Road is very similar, even if not quite as tidy as the Tigers’ plans to move elsewhere continue. By contrast several stadiums used by Super League clubs seem, to me as a TV viewer anyway, to lack atmosphere. Even fairly big crowds can appear to rattle around in some of them, and I’m not sure how healthy that is for atmosphere, or indeed for the sport’s image. You don’t need a particularly big crowd at such as Featherstone, Batley or Castleford to generate a real buzz, though, which has to make – to use their traditional names – Post Office Road, Mount Pleasant and Wheldon Road well worth visiting.
