Free Realms, the free-to-play, online game from Sony Online Entertainment, is now available for Mac OS X, the game’s makers have announced in cooperation with TransGaming Inc., the company behind Cider, a technology that allows PC games to be enabled on Apple's Intel Macs. Sony Online Entertainment has issued an official report in collaboration with TransGaming, announcing the release of Free Realms for the Macintosh. “Mac users can now enjoy the family-friendly online world, integrated into synchronous gameplay on the same game servers as PC players,” the duo said. “Free Realms players on the Mac platform will experience consistent controls and functionality and will have full access to the existing Marketplace and community forums.” The porting of Free Realms to Mac was enabled through TransGaming's Cider Portability Engine, a proprietary technology that allows PC games to run on Intel-based Macs without the need to redevelop the game from the ground-up. Free Realms has more than 14 million registered players, according to Sony Online Entertainment. Engaged in an expansive virtual world, players customize their characters and play a wide variety of mini games in a safe, online environment with a focus on social networking. "Free Realms offers a truly unique and captivating user experience that aligns with TransGaming's focus on bringing new massive multiplayer online games to the Mac platform," commented Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming Inc. "Our strategic partnership with SOE has strengthened our leadership position in the enablement of family-friendly titles for the growing Mac community and offers Mac gamers an ever-increasing catalog of outstanding content," added Gupta. Free Realms coming to Mac. Free Realms is a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) set in a family friendly fantasy world. While the does feature combat, it also allows players to focus on other activities including exploration, building, pet-raising, and mini-games. The new edition of Free Realms comes as part of a partnership between SOE and TransGaming, a multi-platform developer specializing in Mac and Linux/CE platform ports. The Mac version allows synchronous play between Mac and PC users on the same servers, which also means Mac players have consistent controls and access to Marketplace. Currently, Free Realms claims an audience of 14 million — which puts it just ahead of competitor Wizard101 (10 million-plus) and probably somewhere behind Club Penguin (12 million*) based on last-announced user counts for both MMOs. * Club Penguin claimed 12 million in 2007 just before The Walt Disney Company bought the game and opened distribution channels in Canada, England, Australia, Brazil, and Argentina. Free Realms. FreeRealms is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online roleplaying game) similar to World of Warcraft, and the game is a free version that works to provide a similar fantasy roleplaying experience. Many different MMORPGs exist, but there is little doubt that World of Warcraft is the most popular. However, it also comes at a fairly steep price, and many players don't have the time to devote to the game that would warrant such cost. Instead, those players might prefer a game like FreeRealms. The game runs entirely through a web browser after a simple plug-in download, and it costs absolutely nothing. The design is also quite unique since it seems to be catered toward a younger crowd. It's almost stylized like a cartoon, which helps attract a wider range of gamers. Players only have to register with the FreeRealms website, download a small browser plug-in, and they are ready to create their character. Each free account can support up to one character. After the game is prepared, simply launch it by clicking the 'Play Now' button. This will cause the game to open in its own window, and a tutorial will begin the game. This tutorial might be a bit dull for those who have played these sorts of games before, but new players should certainly follow the tutorial. After the tutorial, the game becomes just like any other standard RPG. The player can walk around and explore their general area, and they can talk with other players, who are played by real people. There are non-person characters as well, and they tend to be the sources of quests, weapons, and armor. The game has a currency system that allows the player to amass wealth from their completed tasks, and there is even an option for adopting a pet. As a MMORPG, the social component of the game can't be forgotten. There are tons of ways to communicate with the surrounding players, including direct chat, in-game emotes, and a friends list that allows you to communicate with your friends no matter where they are. Despite the fact this game is essentially free, it runs exceedingly smoothly. Of course, the web-based nature of the game prevents it from running perfectly, but it is still a solid effort from a relatively unknown producer. The controls are highly responsive, and the animations are generally smooth and entertaining. There isn't much not to like about FreeRealms. There are a few annoying features that most free games can't help but incorporate, like the ability to buy the best items in the game with real money. There are also some limits to the characters, jobs, and objects that free players can experience, which is why the paid level of the game exists at all. Those who can resist the urge to buy those items will still enjoy the content in the free game. Free Realms.
