Ms. Grey's accompanying text is very much worth reading--- thoughtful and well-put. Ms. Grey is a figure who is worth considering--- excellent musical work with aTelecine, good dj skills, intelligence and serious acting skill as well as her obvious sexuality and her ability to push limits and show the attraction of transgression. "Neu Sex" is a photo collection worth having. Shana Scudder says Not much text, but I like the idea of object-turned-subject that works throughout this book, and how she tells so much of her story through images -- images that she controls, unlike her video image over which she admits she has little control. Peppered with references to Western philosophers who help to frame her self- depiction, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in issues of female empowerment and subjectivity within an industry that has the reputation of promoting the opposite ideals. Geoffrey says Waste of time. Book cover and title fooled me. I thought it might be interesting, entertaining, and creative. In truth, the book just contains a collection of snapshots and photos and does not resemble that type of art I was expecting. Of all the photos in the book, only a few have some creative style and intent. I could pass on the photos of puke and vomit on the floor. The layout is nice, but overall it is not worth my money. Great self portraiture- she lets her eyes work the whole show and I would have loved to see a real full-on toothy grin. I wonder how much of her identity is tied up in having long hair? Sasha Grey may of had a profession you can not respect, but you must respect the person who hasn't played a card of why she was in the business. She chose to be and embraced it and made a name and a career outside of it while still in it. And has truly a wide thought process on many a things. She is an individual and a person and that's what she makes very clear in her book. She isn't a piece of meat to consider a play thing. While the some pictures are truly candid some still feel very much staged. The pictures when she's just woken up, about to go to bed or out on the town very obviously not being her persona of Sasha Grey are the most candid. And that she had love on that journey is what impresses me most. Russell Grant says Ultimately a waste of time. The photo's are not all that bad, and none of them are all that great either. It's more of a wasted opportunity since she want's the work to speak for itself while offering goofy pseudo- intellectual blurbs. None of it works so really, if this was her resulting feminist statement after pushing a porn career, it was all a bit of a waste. Andrew Nolan says Some of the photos are "nice", though how many of them are actually show an unguarded and more intimate portrayals of Grey's life is debatable. Many of the pictures look more like Grey acting through her idea of what an unguarded moment looks like rather than a genuine glimpse into her downtime between shoots. There are some interesting images in the book, you just have to trawl through vast amount of pictures that look like any young woman's social media photo collection; mugging for the camera being held at arms length, self portrait in her underwear in the bathroom mirror with a cell phone ad infinitum. Grey describes her work in the adult film industry as performance art and large sections of this book appear to be a part of that same performance, just manifested in a different way. She's given us a version of one kind of intimacy and now she's giving us another, but neither are particularly 'real' and that's probably the point. Unfortunately Grey's writing is largely dire and it's hard to fathom why, she's clearly not stupid, but her pieces read as if she hasn't reread them and they've just been published without much self-critiquing or external editing. The surprising thing is that whatever your opinion about Vice magazine might be, they generally have a high standard of writing and editing, so why Grey's pieces were passed in this form is perplexing. Her writing veers from fortune cookie relationship advice to a "what i did on my summer vacation" style dissection of male power in the adult film industry. Very sad, not least because a Sasha Grey armed with a Foucauldian (for example) analysis of the structures within the adult film industry would be very powerful. And it's something i suspect she's capable of, she just needs an editor that's not laughing behind her back at the cute porno star trying to think big; at times it reads like she's being given enough rope to hang herself with. I interviewed ten women between the ages of nineteen and thirty looking for stories from, arguably, the first generation to watch pornographic films before engaging in sexual activities themselves. After listening to women’s stories, two spaces stood out as places of fracture, tension, and also possibility – mainstream, heterosexual pornography and heterosexual anal sex. I am interested in conceptualizing women who engage in socially ‘problematic’ sites as outside the traditional dichotomy of cultural victims who are unaware of their own subordination or as subjects that are entirely resistant and agentic. For example, when porn is viewed as something only men watch, it reinforces perceptions that women are not as sexual as men. This feeds into heteronormative assumptions of women’s sexuality as biologically passive. When women in the audience are considered, questions of agency, self-reflexivity and the possibility for resistant relationships with pornography are absent. Using a narrative methodology, this research works to conceptualize women’s participation in and/or avoidance of pornography and anal sex as indicative of continual and active negotiations with postfeminist and heteronormative definitions of gender, sexuality and sex.

    PREVIOUSLY ON “Cut the Shitcom”: Meta-television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Toni Pape Introduction The last decade has seen a number of fictional TV series about television and film production. These television shows – including the ones to be analysed here: Entourage, Extras, and 30 Rock – relocate the process of creative revitalization in front of the camera. Meta-television, as I understand it here, then is television about the media industry and, more particularly, about the production and quality of film and television itself.1 The three above-mentioned television programs present contemporary writers, actors, directors, etc. working on movies and television shows. Especially Extras and 30 Rock offer a critical overview of how television formats are produced, and they significantly do so in a period of time during which the working conditions for television-makers have fundamentally changed. In a most general sense, the criticism that these shows purport works on two levels. First, as we will see further on, there is an explicit criticism implied in the way the TV shows at hand present the making of a TV show. Thus, there is for instance Andy Millman, the protagonist of Extras about whom I will have more to say later on, who clearly states his dissatisfaction as a disillusioned actor/writer: ANDY: I wanna do something that I’m proud of. And I won’t be proud of shouting out catch phrases in a stupid wig and funny glasses. […] So basically, I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, ok?
