RESUMO Esta tese investiga o erótico e o tanático da pornografia. Para tanto, realiza uma análise de conteúdo conforme proposto por Laurence Bardin nos vídeos presentes nas páginas iniciais do dia 11 de março de 2017 dos sites xvideos.com e pornhub.com, os dois mais acessados do mundo, e do conteúdo da página beautifulagony.com, seguido da análise dos quatro discursos de Jacques Lacan dos mesmos objetos. É possível encontrar o erótico no pornográfico? Ter nestas reproduções sobre o sexo algo que é capaz de formar, de unir, de ressignificar? Em cujo processo de consumo o sujeito se revele, a si mesmo e aos outros, produzindo novos significados e novas relações em um contínuo deslizar do significante? É erótica a pornografia? É tanática? Tem como objetivos secundários construir uma definição de erotismo, a partir de Sócrates, Bataille e Lacan; de pornografia, a partir de Hunt, Maes e Williams; conceituar cultura pornográfica e distingui-la de uma cultura dionisíaca e de uma cultura libertina; e conceituar, correlacionar e distinguir a pornografia artística da arte pornográfica. Palavras-chaves: Comunicação; erotismo; tânatos; pornografia; pornhub. ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the erotic and the thanatic of pornography. To do so, it performs a content analysis, as proposed by Laurence Bardin, of the videos displayed in the march 11 of 2017 home page of the pornographic websites xvideos.com and pornhub.com, the most accessed ones in the world, and the content of the webpage beautifulagony.com, followed by the analysis of the four speeches, formulated by Jacques Lacan, of the same objects. Is it possible to find the erotic in the pornographic? Are those explicit contents about sex capable of making the consumer form new relations, unite and create new meanings? Capable of making the subject to reveal itself and to others? Is porn erotic? Is it thanatic? This thesis also have the secondary objectives of construct a definition of erotism, influenced by the works of Socrates, Bataille and Lacan, a definition of pornography, based on Hunt, Maes, Williams and others; to create a concept of pornographic culture and to establish a distinction between a dionysius culture and a libertine culture; and to create a concept, correlate e distinguish artistic pornography and pornographic art.     “GIRLS DON’T WATCH PORN”: A NARRATIVE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN’S NEGOTIATIONS WITH ‘PROBLEMATIC SPACES’ by Tara Dawn Snape B.A., University Of British Columbia, 2008 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Interdisciplinary Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) July 2010 © Tara Dawn Snape, 2010 Abstract This research investigates the various strategies women use to negotiate, rationalize and story their sexual identities and their relationship to potentially problematic spaces. I interviewed ten women between the ages of nineteen and thirty looking for stories from, arguably, the first generation to watch pornographic films before engaging in sexual activities themselves. After listening to women’s stories, two spaces stood out as places of fracture, tension, and also possibility – mainstream, heterosexual pornography and heterosexual anal sex. I am interested in conceptualizing women who engage in socially ‘problematic’ sites as outside the traditional dichotomy of cultural victims who are unaware of their own subordination or as subjects that are entirely resistant and agentic. For example, when porn is viewed as something only men watch, it reinforces perceptions that women are not as sexual as men. This feeds into heteronormative assumptions of women’s sexuality as biologically passive. When women in the audience are considered, questions of agency, self-reflexivity and the possibility for resistant relationships with pornography are absent. Using a narrative methodology, this research works to conceptualize women’s participation in and/or avoidance of pornography and anal sex as indicative of continual and active negotiations with postfeminist and heteronormative definitions of gender, sexuality and sex.

    PREVIOUSLY ON “Cut the Shitcom”: Meta-television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Toni Pape Introduction The last decade has seen a number of fictional TV series about television and film production. These television shows – including the ones to be analysed here: Entourage, Extras, and 30 Rock – relocate the process of creative revitalization in front of the camera. Meta-television, as I understand it here, then is television about the media industry and, more particularly, about the production and quality of film and television itself.1 The three above-mentioned television programs present contemporary writers, actors, directors, etc. working on movies and television shows. Especially Extras and 30 Rock offer a critical overview of how television formats are produced, and they significantly do so in a period of time during which the working conditions for television-makers have fundamentally changed. In a most general sense, the criticism that these shows purport works on two levels. First, as we will see further on, there is an explicit criticism implied in the way the TV shows at hand present the making of a TV show. Thus, there is for instance Andy Millman, the protagonist of Extras about whom I will have more to say later on, who clearly states his dissatisfaction as a disillusioned actor/writer: ANDY: I wanna do something that I’m proud of. And I won’t be proud of shouting out catch phrases in a stupid wig and funny glasses. […] So basically, I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, ok? (Extras “Orlando Bloom”, 21’30”) In a very outspoken way, the programs in question take stock of television’s outworn creative standards and its resulting mediocrity.
