While the publication of The American Papers always requires the commitment and hard work of its student editorial team, this year made that task exponentially more difficult. Our editorial team persisted despite the myriad challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shut down our campus in an historically unprecedented way. Despite the regular demands of their school work and personal lives, this pandemic required extraordinary efforts to finalize the publication of this journal. Nicole Dean deserves special recognition for her excellent work on the layout design of this issue despite the campus shutdown. Finally, I especially would like to thank Laura Fauvor and Naja Shabaka for serving as this volume’s Editors in Chief. Their shared leadership, diligence, creativity, vision, and commitment to ensuring a democratic process made the production of the 2019-2020 issue possible. For their tenacity and commitment to The American Papers in the midst of this period of uncertainty, Laura and Naja deserve the highest of praise. 5 The American Papers In recognition of his many contributions to the American Studies department since 1972, and the invaluable lessons he has imparted to his students, the 2019-2020 issue of The American Papers is dedicated to Professor John Ibson, who retired in 2019. 6 Welcome to the 2019-2020 issue of The American Papers! This issue of The American Papers continues the tradition of presenting a selection of quality papers written by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in American Studies courses at California State University, Fullerton during the preceding academic year. Each paper makes a valuable contribution to the field of American Studies and the legacy of this journal. The essays included illustrate the journal’s progress and strengthen the foundation on which it can evolve, demonstrating the work that has been done and calling attention to issues that are still in need of ex- amination not only within the academic field but society as a whole. The papers featured in this year's issue focus on race, gender, sexuality, public memory, and more, reflecting the diverse courses offered by the American Studies department at CSUF. These courses engage students in various avenues of study with the intention of examination from an interdisciplanary perspective. This year's journal is organized thematically, linking papers that examine similar subject matter to demonstrate the range of study that can be conducted within the various aspects of American culture. We begin with a discussion of Gender and Education before learning about Imagined Communities and their importance. We then see the way Substances and Stigma collide. Afterwards, we look at the messages embedded in and the potential impacts of Pop Culture in America. Next, we learn about Culture and the Environment, particularly the effects that they have on one another. We conclude with crucial observations of Race and Resistance. Each year, The American Papers publishes an exceptional paper chosen by a committee of professors to honor Earl James Weaver, one of the founding professors of American Studies at CSUF. This year's winner is Laura Fauvor for her paper, "Take a Seat: Huey P. Newton's Infamous Chair and the Memory of the Black Panther Party." Similar to the work done in any American Studies course, we hope that this year’s journal is knowledge inducing, sparks critical thought, discussion, and action. The Editors-in-Chief thank our contributors and our editorial board for working together to create this year's issue. We also thank Michelle Okawa for creating this year’s cover, reflecting the journal’s themes. Similarities, as well as class, ethnic, sex, and regional differences among Americans. 345: The American Dream An interdisciplinary analysis, in settings both historical and contemporary, of the myth and reality surrounding the notion of America as a land of unpar- alleled and unlimited possibilities, especially in the achievement of personal material success. 350: Seminar in Theory and Methods of American Studies Provides an understanding and appreciation of methodology, theories of so- ciety and images of humanity as they affect American studies contributions to scholarship. 377: Prejudice and American Culture Concepts and methods of American culture studies as tools for better under- standing the origins and appeal of intolerance, past and present. Particular focus on racism, ethnic and religious bias, sexism, and homophobia. 401T: American Culture and Nature Analyzes the meaning of nature in American culture, past and present. Traces the development of environmental attitudes as reflected and shaped in such cultural landscapes as the frontier, countryside, city, suburb. 401T: American Culture Through Social Science Explores the earliest efforts of American sociologists, anthropologists, psy- chologists, and political scientists to study American culture, and the ways that they understood urban life, racial and ethnic identity, and the role of the individual in modern society. 401T: Race in American Culture This seminar examines how racial difference is constructed in American culture. Readings offer perspectives on the racial meanings within cultural products and practices, the intersection of stereotypes and social experience, and the changing notions of race over time. 8 428: American Monsters Interdisciplinary study of the monster in American culture. Monsters in his- torical context as reflection of fears and anxieties surrounding nature, science, gender, race, community, the body. Images of monstrosity in film, literature, folklore, television, performance art, youth culture. 442: Television and American Culture American television as an interactive form of cultural expression, both prod- uct and producer of cultural knowledge. Structure and content of television genres, and social-historical context of television’s development and use, audi- ence response, habits, and environments of viewing. 502: Seminar on Public Memory Analyzes narratives of the past encapsulated in museums, memorials, historic preservation sites, living history projects, and popular culture. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

    RESOLUTION Honoring and recognizing Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson on her 100th birthday for her extraordinary bravery and brilliance in mathematics WHEREAS, Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson was born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, the youngest of four children. Johnson showed brilliance in mathematics from a young age, and actually skipped several grades because of her intelligence. Unfortunately, her hometown only offered education for black students until eighth grade. However, her parents were invested in their children’s education and moved the family 125 miles away to Institute, West Virginia so their children could continue to attend school. Johnson attended West Virginia State High School and earned her diploma at age 14; and WHEREAS, After graduating high school, Katherine attended West Virginia State, a historically black college. As a student, she took every math course offered by the college. Multiple professors mentored her, including chemist and mathematician Angie Turner King and W. W. Schieffelin Claytor, the third African American to receive a PhD in math. Claytor even added new math courses just for Katherine. She graduated summa cum laude in 1937, with degrees in mathematics and French, at age 18; and WHEREAS, After graduating college, Katherine took on a teaching job at a black public school in Marion, Virginia. In 1939, after marrying her first husband, James Goble, Katherine left her teaching job and enrolled in a graduate math program at West Virginia University, making her the first African-American woman to attend graduate school there. In fact, she was one of three African American students selected to integrate the graduate school after the United States Supreme Court ruling Missouri ex rel.

It traces the growing reliance upon contingent work as the foundation for industrial capitalism along the Pacific Coast; the shaping of urban space according to the demands of workers and capital; the formation of a working class subject through the discourse and social practices of both laborers and intellectuals; and workers’ struggles to improve their circumstances in the face of coercive and onerous conditions. Woven together, these strands reveal the consequences of a regional economy built upon contingent and migratory forms of labor. This workforce was hardly new to the American West, but the Pacific Coast’s reliance upon contingent labor reached its apogee after World War I, drawing hundreds of thousands of young men through far flung circuits of migration that stretched across the Pacific and into Latin America, transforming its largest urban centers and working class demography in the process. The presence of this substantial workforce (itinerant, unattached, and racially heterogeneous) was out step with the expectations of the modern American worker (stable, married, and white), and became the warrant for social investigators, employers, the state, and other workers to sharpen the lines of solidarity and exclusion.

    Museum & Society, 11(3) 207 The Bomb in the Museum: Nuclear Technology and the Human Element Robin Gerster* Abstract This article examines the commemorative role played by museums of nuclear technology in the United States, particularly those supported by the government agency responsible for the nation’s nuclear weapons and reactor programs, the Department of Energy. The management of public perceptions of America’s nuclear history in these museums reflects national defence and security imperatives in the post 9/11 era. The legacy of American nuclearism is complex and contradictory, and presents a daunting challenge to curators in museums sanctioned by vested interests. The many beneficial civilian applications of nuclear technology have be balanced by the recognition of the dire destructiveness of nuclear weapons; the compulsion to celebrate American technological achievement has to be checked by the acknowledgement of the damage wrought by the military use of nuclear energy both at home and abroad. A comparison with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum suggests that nuclear ‘victory’ is more problematic to exhibit than nuclear victimhood. Key words: Nuclear museums, nuclear weapons, technology and culture Exhibiting Nuclear Nationalism It will never compete with the revered sites of the Civil War, but America’s nuclear defence landscape has attracted increasing tourist attention in the years since the end of the Cold War. More and more restored and decontaminated facilities have become available for visiting and viewing, and provided with a material focus in the form of museums, visitor centres and outdoor exhibits. Nuclear commemoration is by no means confined to the United States.

  • Chapter 2 Review of Literature
    CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE The second chapter of the present study is on the "Review of Literature". It is divided into three sections namely, theoretical review, technical review and research review. This chapter begins with an overview of how this chapter has been organized, followed by literature reviews. This chapter focuses on what has been done so far and how it is related to the present study being conducted. This chapter has an inventory of the review of literature pertaining to the shawls' history in India and its preservation and conservation practices in museums and private organizations. The research has been formulated with the key endeavour to conserve these precious momentoes for future generations to come and to implement its conservation methods. Fundamental information about fibers and structures that affect the long-term stability of textiles have been provided in the theoretical review. Both internal and external agents of deterioration have been described in the technical review. A wide range of preventive conservation strategies specifically related to shawls has been explored. Basic conservation interventions have been presented, demonstrated and issues in ethical decision making have been addressed in this chapter. These have been covered under the following heads: 2.1 Theoretical Review 2.1.1 Historical background about shawls 2.1.2 Fundamental information about woollen fibers 2.1.3 Agents of deterioration and its preventive conservation 2.1.4 Remedial conservation processes 2.2 Research Review 2.1.1 Historical background about shawls The review of literature is an important step in understanding the researches in India.
