  • Reflections from Djs Rearranging Relations and Improvising Continuity
Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol. 14, No. 2–3 #djlife During the Pandemic: Reflections from DJs Rearranging Relations and Improvising Continuity Mark V. Campbell and Ayşe Barut Across multiple social media platforms, the hashtag #djlife has offered a glimpse into what DJs do in both their online and offline lives. Some DJs post their remixes, others post their practice sessions or their latest booking. Globally, as nightclubs closed their doors and festivals cancelled their 2020 editions in response to COVID-19, DJs were forced to reconsider how to maintain their livelihoods. Like most performers in popular culture, the DJ’s public visibility is tied to their continued relevance, so with two major arenas—festivals and nightclubs—closed, DJs had to quickly find a way to engage their fans. For many DJs, livestreaming themselves mixing records became a way to continue connecting with their fans. While several DJs were already livestreaming, such as DJ Mel Boogie on her Toronto-based radio show Studio B on Vibe 105 FM, many more delved into streaming for the first time during the pandemic. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram became the go-to sites for various kinds of livestream events during the pandemic. Verzuz, a visual webcast series presented, created, and launched by multi-platinum producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz at the end of March 2020, quickly established viewership records as it went viral. Each Verzuz online event features two prominent recording artists squaring off “against” each other in a friendly competition, each sharing their esteemed catalogues. With high profile artists in events such as Jill Scott vs.

• Doyle Bramhall
BIO DOYLE BRAMHALL It’s apropos that DOYLE BRAMHALL’s new Yep Roc CD is titled Is It News because, although they’re absolutely true to his deep roots in the blues, its dozen original tunes mark a turning point that is both ambitious and the logical summation of his artistic evolution. The answer to the forward- thinking, envelope-pushing CD’s title is a resounding yes—and the news is all good! “I wanted to make an all-original record that was big, energetic, intimate, and unpredictable,” Doyle states. “We got a lot of the sounds by pushing everything to the limit and then pulling it back from there.” Fans already accustomed to Doyle’s high standards and willingness to chart new territory will nonetheless be pleased and surprised at just how high he raises the bar. This instant classic is the benchmark of Bramhall’s storied career—which is saying a lot! Continuing the tradition he started with the songs he co-wrote with Stevie Ray Vaughan, which struck a chord with the biggest audience the blues has ever enjoyed, he deftly expands the idiom’s vocabulary and texture. Any discussion of Texas blues, be it T-Bone Walker or Stevie Ray, is incomplete without mention of Doyle Bramhall. As singer, songwriter, and drummer, he has been an integral part of that rich state’s music for almost 40 years and, indeed, one of the founding fathers of the blues/roots resurgence synonymous with the Lone Star state and the migration from Dallas to its musical epicenter, Austin.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Floetry To Feat Rap Artist Common on SupaStar Written by Robert ID1831 Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:50 - It's more than their beauty. It’s more than the passionate vocals of Marsha Ambrosius (the Songstress) and elegant spoken word of Natalie Stewart (the Floacist) that has fans captivated everywhere since FLOETRY first stepped on stage. The dynamic duo's incredible success is deeply rooted in their ability to appeal to all ages, races and genres of music lovers. The proof is in their long list of accolades and demand for appearances: six Grammy nods, six Soul Train awards perched on their mantle, a NAACP nomination for Outstanding New Artist, a standing ovation at BET's Walk of Fame: Tribute to Smokey Robinson, impressionable performances at the Essence Music Festival & Def Poetry Jam (HBO). FLOETRY known to make music that speaks to listeners'' mind, body, and soul are now ready to release a masterpiece to stand the test of time and raise the bar in music with their third CD Flo''Ology on Geffen Records. Plus, they''ve enlisted super producer Scott Storch and Hip-Hop's savior rap artist Common on their 1st single, "SupaStar". Fresh off the Kool Philosophy Tour with The Roots and the Sugar Water Festival Tour alongside Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, FLOETRY are quick to point out the differences between Flo''Ology and the topics covered on their 6X Grammy-nominated debut Floetic and its follow-up, Floacism (Live). This time, the duo's lyrics more specifically span the spectrum of romantic relationships.
