LMTV with GREA T

How is it LMTV with GREAT? Long and Middle Term Volunteering is an international volunteering program where volunteers commits to a special thematic project of 1-3 months (middle term) or >6 - 12 months (long term). LMTV is mostly dedicated to do voluntary service in regular basis and for the purpose of the sustainability of the project. This activity is more of individual placement rather than in group. Sometimes there are 2 to 3 volunteers in certain project. LMTV projects give opportunity for the volunteer to experiment, to learn new things, to meet interesting people and to develop personal growth.

MLT volunteers will stay in one place within or nearby the project site, supporting and collaborating with local partners and/or local communities in planning, preparing, implementing and evaluating their activities. They are immersed into the local culture to a much greater extent allowing them to integrate better with the local community and actually become part of it. This way, LMTV enables sustainable work for peace and strengthen the bonds among volunteers, local communities and partners as project hosts, GREAT and other international partners as IVS NGOs.

The Aims of LMTV are: 1. To contribute to the sustainability of the project 2. To give opportunity to the volunteers with their various backgrounds, skills and interests in reaching the goal(s) of the project. 3. To provide the space for volunteers to be involved in every phase of a project including need assessment, implementation, evaluation and giving recommendation to accelerate the goal(s) achievement of the project.

Volunteers’ Profiles 1. 18 years old or older 2. Self-organized, responsible and well-prepared 3. Keen on learning Indonesian language 4. Self-reliant and capable of improvisation 5. Open minded, adaptable and ready to adjust to different culture and customs 6. Agree to stay during the whole length of the project 7. Willing to have project’s activities during the weekend when GREAT organize events on weekends

Project Description

GREAT-LMTV01/Abu Hurairah Orphanage/Salatiga Central Java/Kids, Edu/ in the beginning of every month except June – July 2016/18+/1 vols

Central Java Salatiga City

Project: Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of Moslem orphanages located in Salatiga, 2 hours by from Semarang city center to the south. Orphanages in Indonesian’s sense can be slightly different from those in other countries. Orphanages in Indonesia DO NOT ALWAYS mean a shelter ONLY for the orphan children providing them with places to live, but also a shelter for the less advantage children with low economic or socially difficult background. In orphanages, children will be facilitated to the access of formal and non-formal education including guidance from the adults in their daily lives, and so in the Abu Hurairoh Orphanage.

Abu Hurairah orphanage accommodates 66 children (36 males / 30 females) and serves the function as a place to stay for them as well as to obtain formal education from kindergarten until senior high school. In most cases the children will stay there until they become 18 years old. Most of children in this orphanage are orphans but many of them also come from low economic family background that cannot afford for their children’s formal education. The Orphanage has agreement with Muhammadiah Schools in Salatiga and most of the children study there for free or special tuition fees.

The children live separately between girls and boys. Therefore, Abu Hurairah Orphanage has not only one house, but three houses; two houses in Kauman for all the girls and boys age of 6-15 years old and one house Soka for the older boys age of 16 – 18 years old. The volunteers’ placement will depend on the need and decision of the orphanage’ management, either the volunteer will go to Kauman or Soka.

Volunteering Activities: There are many issues to be addressed in this orphanage. One issue is environment. Garbage separation and raising awareness on the importance of clean environment were started by the previous volunteers. They also built a burning storage in an environmental way. The new volunteers are expected to continue and develop this activity. Another issue is English. English is an international language considered important for self-confidence and for being active as global citizen. However, learning English is not an easy access for many children in many schools in Indonesia, include Salatiga especially in the area of Abu Hurairoh Orphanage. Volunteers will do project to assist English learning process with local teachers in the morning time. The volunteers would be expected to assist English classes in some from elementary, junior to senior high schools there. During exam season, volunteers could also help the children for extra study hour in the orphanage to prepare them. Other issues are sports, educative games, creative and art activities, public health and personal hygiene. Volunteers are expected to stay positive, have self-initiative and be self-organized. Volunteers’ various backgrounds and interests are to enrich the whole activities of LMTV program in Abu Hurairoh. There is no certain activity to be done the same way as previous ones. New volunteers are always given enough space to do need assessment and decide which activities they would like to implement. Please be creative and inspire the children to be creative like you too.

Project: GREAT is taking part in the effort of protection, promotion and conservation of the heritage sites in Indonesia. One of them is Borobudur Compound. Borobudur is listed in the World heritage List UNESCO since 1991 ( http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/592 ). The main and still issue of Borobudur conservation is the mass tourism. At least three millions of domestic and internationalvisitors step on the temple every year, this brings at least 150 million kg only from the weighs of tourists. The facts that the visitors step on the temple wearing different surface of shoes cause erosion to the stones. And the weather brings the unsheltered stones of the temple in higher risk of erosion. Therefore, it is important to organize sustainable action to raise the awareness of the visitors.

In order to make the action sustainable, GREAT engages one local youth who concerns this issue. They are the Young Guardian Club (YGC) Borobudur. GREAT has become mentor for YGC Borobudur since September 2015. The members of YGC of Borobudur are between 15-17 years old. They come from the local high schools student. http://ygcborobudur.blogspot.co.id/

This year is the 25 th anniversary of the temple listed in the WH List of UNESCO. To celebrate this, GREAT and Borobudur Conservation Office (BCO) will cooperate together with other stakeholders to organize various activities. LMTV in Borobudur this year will focus on this celebration and on becoming mentor for YGC Borobudur.
