STUDELL DEPUTY GRAND MASTER 6 GRAND LODGE OF MINNESOTA BIOGRAPHY DEPUTY GRAND MASTER JOHN B. STUDELL John Bergman Hodge Studell was born and raised in South Minneapolis. He was educated in Minnesota and England. After graduation, his interest in law shifted focus to politics and more especially within the historical context of political science. An opportunity of gaining further graduate credits that could apply towards a Masters Degree led him back to Great Britain. Gratified by the publication of his subject article as well as a very rewarding grade, John soon returned to the United States. Upon his return, he was hired by the Minnesota State legislature and worked for the Minnesota House of Representatives. During these years, he also found time to dedicate further study to his lifelong passion of horology. In an effort to hone and refine his ability and technique, he attended St. Paul College where he received an outstanding student award for watch and jewelry course work. In the years to follow, John returned to England for a Masters class in complications and design. Working with his father, he often enjoyed the opportunity of employing his watch, clock and jewelry skills. Today, this experience and educational background is used primarily in the maintenance of his own (too large) collection, his in-house design pieces and all too frequent acquisitions. Accepting a job with an agency of the Federal Government in the 1990’s prompted a move. Not many years later, believing that he would derive more satisfaction away from government work, he entered the private sector. This transition allowed for a happy return to Minnesota. John purchased a home in Minneapolis which just happened to be located near his South Minneapolis office and was also situated in his old neighborhood. In the fall of 1998, after years of interest and at the suggestion of his father, he joined Minnehaha Lodge No. 165. In rapid succession he proceeded through the chairs and served as Master in 2004. Memberships in both the Scottish and York Rites followed, as did Zuhrah Shrine, Arc Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Minnehaha Chapter No. 37 Order of the Eastern Star, Minneapolis Council No. No. 2, Mounted Commandery No. 23, Red Cross of Constantine, York Rite College, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest, Knight Masons, Royal Order of Scotland, and quite a few other invitational Bodies. John’s Masonic involvement led to his having served as Wise Master of the Chapter of Rose Croix, charter member of the Minneapolis Valley Knights of St. Andrew, Master of Cass Lodge No. 243 and a membership in Cataract Lodge No. 2. In addition, John has received the 33rd Degree, the Knight Commander of the Temple, Order of the Purple Cross, KYCH and has enjoyed the distinction of having served as a Grand Officer in each of the York Rite Bodies. John was also active with the Board of Custodians of the Work. John is greatly honored by having been afforded the opportunity of serving the Grand Lodge in the capacities of Grand Sword Bearer under Most Worshipful Brother Jerry Rhodes and as Grand Chaplain under Most Worshipful Brother Thomas Jackson. In 2009 Most Worshipful Brother John L. Cook, Jr. appointed john to the progressive line of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. John regards this appointment as a singularly affirming gesture and a supreme Honor. John and Lissa Bill married in December of 2012. Lissa is the daughter of Patricia and Worshipful Brother Gary Bill. Lissa and John’s marriage joined two people in a loving and supportive relationship and it also served to unite two families, both of which enjoy deep and historic ties to the Fraternity. 2017 ANNUALPROCEEDINGS GRAND LODGE OFFICERS 2017-2018—Front row, left to right, Grand Secretary, Douglas J.
