Poland’s efforts to support developing countries and participation in international organisations dealing with the reduction and eradication of poverty are important gestures of solidarity from a country that only a few years ago was a beneficiary of such aid itself. Humanitarian aid is an important element of Poland’s development cooperation. Due to the current global political situation, it is mainly aimed at countries of the Middle East and Ukraine, regions affected by armed conflicts that are not geographically distant. Helping refugees as close to their homelands as possible is one of the priorities of Polish foreign policy. Non-governmental organisations, experienced in working abroad for economic and social development, are the main partners in our efforts. Their expertise can support the development of civil societies and democratic systems in countries that need such assistance. Polish embassies and consulates have also played an increasingly important role, and through the Small Grants System they offer assistance to those most vulnerable, financing both small infrastructure investments and educational projects. Despite their modest budgets, these projects are extremely effective and address the critical needs of small local communities. This report summarises the most important facts about Polish development cooperation, at the same time presenting numerous examples of projects implemented not only in the ten countries that are the main recipients of our aid, but also throughout the world. POLAND IN THE SYSTEM OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION For more than a decade, Poland has been actively participating in coordina- ted international actions for the benefit of the countries most in need of develop- ment and humanitarian aid. Development cooperation is a part of Polish foreign policy, it is in line with the joint efforts at the European and global level, and aimed at fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals. All Polish endeavours in this area are based on the Development Cooperation Act of 16 September 2011, which defines its principles and forms. Originally from Albany, New York, Sophia joined the AU Model United Nations Team her freshman year, and also served on the AmeriMUNC V Secretariat as the Director of Communications. In her free time, Sophia loves talking about Russia, spending time with her Phi Mu sisters, and watching Law and Order. She can't wait to be back on campus for AmeriMUNC VI! Emily is a junior at American University majoring in International Studies. She grew up in Huntington Beach, California and was very involved in her high school's Model UN team, participating in around 18 conferences before she graduated. Since 2005, he has been the President of the Somali community in Poland and became the vice-president of the Foundation for Somalia in 2015. Alisa Ananbeh Former UNHCR officer NOHA program graduate in 2015, with 3 years of experience in Syrian emergency response in UNHCR - Jordan. Ms Ananbeh worked in Ukraine with Protection cluster in information management sector. She is passionate about innovation, technological advancement within humanitarian settings. Agnieszka Bieńczyk-Missala Researcher and Academic Teacher, University of Warsaw Ms Bieńczyk-Missala has been a researcher and academic teacher at the Institute of International Relations, University of Warsaw since 2004. She is also the Chairman of the scientific project Prevention of Massive Violations of Human Rights, financed by Poland’s National Scientific Centre, Vice Director for Academic Research and International Cooperation at the Institute of International Relations, University of Warsaw (2008-2012). Her main areas of research are international protection of human rights, prevention of mass atrocities and humanitarian issues. Sophie Borel (facilitator) NOHA General Manager Ms Borel has worked 15 years in the field in the human rights and humanitarian action sectors, managing a wide range of projects and programmes. From DRC, to Lebanon, Yemen, Cambodia and Jordan, Ms Borel has worked with a number of governmental and non-governmental organisations, of which the United Nations, Save the Children and the European Commission.

    10th World Down Syndrome Day Conference Session 1 Opening and Launch – #CONNECT Virtual event Wednesday 17th March 2021 – 10:00 AM EDT/2:00 PM UTC World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) WDSD is a global awareness day recognised since 2012 by the UN, which takes place on 21 March every year. 21 March, or 21:3, signifies the triplication of chromosome 21, unique to persons with Down syndrome. On 19 December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). Summary of event 10th World Down Syndrome Day Conference – Opening and Launch - #CONNECT On Wednesday 17th, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th March join DSi online as we host our 10th annual World Down Syndrome Day Conference as a series of virtual events. Speakers will include people with Down syndrome, supporters and advocates, government and UN officials and NGO representatives. They will share their experiences, knowledge and expertise, bringing perspectives from around the world. In Session 1, we will look at the importance of #CONNECT (connecting) for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting exacerbation of inequalities. We will identify barriers and solutions to connecting to inform COVID-19 recovery plans and to build a future where connecting is possible on an equal basis with others.
