Arrival of APC at Fort Dunree

We are delighted to unveil the latest addition to the Fort Dunree display. The vehicle has been beautifully restored by the Department of Defence and is already very popular with our visitors. Special mention must go to Fort Dunree Director Col. Declan O’Carroll who worked tirelessly to secure the long term loan of the APC. The Panhard M3 VTT (French: Véhicule de Transport de Troupes), armoured personnel carrier was designed as a private venture with the first prototype completed in 1969. The prototype had a single door in each side of the hull and twin doors in the hull rear. Mounted on the top of the hull was a Giat Industries one-person manually operated turret armed with a 7.5 mm AA-52 machine gun. The first production vehicle, had a redesigned hull incorporating three hatches on either side of the troop compartment, and was completed in 1971. The Panhard M3 armoured personnel carrier shares 95% of its working parts with the Panhard AML armoured car, encouraging many countries to employ both the M3 and the AML in order to reduce operational costs.

Before After As you can see the department of Defence are to be congratulated on the wonderful restoration project they have carried out on the APC

Alfie’s Cycle and Walk

We are helping to organise a charity cycle and walk in aid of Cancer Care West on Sunday 12th October. The event is being organised on behalf of popular former Fort Dunree staff member Alfie McGovern who received tremendous treatment and support from the facilities provided by Cancer Care West. There will be two cycles, 50km and 25km, starting off from the Fort Dunree Car Park at 9.30am. There will also be a 5km walk starting off at the carpark at 10.30am. Refreshments will be provided afterwards. Please come along and support this very worthwhile cause.

Congratulations to Danny and Laura

The Board and Staff of Fort Dunree would like to congratulate Danny and Laura McMonagle who recently celebrated their wedding at Fort Dunree. In a unique occasion the ceremony took place in the helipad and as you can see it was a spectacular setting.

Gibraltar Heritage Trust

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a visit by Jim Crone of Belfast and Bart Van Thienan of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust. There are many similarities between the artefacts we display and the collection that the GHT have and which is not currently available for display. They were both on a tour of Ireland exploring military sites and were most complimentary on the work being carried out at Fort Dunree.

Storytelling evening at Fort Dunree

Our annual Storytelling evening as part of Heritage Week was again a great success and the audience is growing every year. Many thanks to all who came along and contributed and also to Dermot McLaughlin and John McCarter who ran the event in a very enjoyable manner.
