Vergleichsweise wenige Bockkäfer leben als Larven im lebenden Holz, in krautigen Pflanzen oder im Boden. Die Larven der allermeisten Bock- käferarten entwickeln sich im absterbenden oder modernden Holz und gelten wegen ihrer Abbautätigkeit als wichtige Bestandteile von Waldökosystemen. Dadurch wurde es dem Verein auch möglich, gleichzeitig mit den Bockkäfern den Lebensraum Totholz als Thema aufzugreifen. Übersicht über die Aktivitäten der AÖE zum Jahr der Bockkäfer (Abb. 1–3) (für Details siehe LACINY 2020): + Anlässlich der 72. Entomologentagung in Gerasdorf bei Wien wurde am 23. und 24. Februar das Poster „2019 – Jahr der Bockkäfer“ präsentiert (Abb. 1). Five new species and one new genus of Cerambycidae are described from Maranhão: Mirador ayrii gen. nov., sp. nov.; Stizocera ignea sp. nov.; Engyum vicinum sp. nov.; Thoracibidion rubripenne sp. nov.; Polyrhaphis ju sp. nov. Sphagoeme Aurivillius, 1893 is proposed as a new synonym of Limernaea Thomson, 1878, and Sphagoeme nigrotibialis Martins, 1973 is proposed as a new synonym of Limernaea picta Thomson, 1878. A total of 102 known species are recorded for the state of Maranhão for the first time: two Prioninae, 69 Cerambycinae and 31 Lamiinae. Six species are reported for the first time from Brazil. With these new records, and the five new species described, the total number of species recorded from the state of Maranhão increased from 367 to 474. -

Abstract Due to anthropogenic activities, tropical rain forests face many challenges in sustaining biodiversity and maintaining global climates. This project examines how forest successional status affects community composition of saproxylic cerambycids, which, as early colonists of moribund trees, have an important role in nutrient cycling. In the lowland rain forest of Costa Rica, thirty-nine trees in five plant families (Fabaceae, Lecythidaceae, Malvaceae, Moraceae, and Sapotaceae) were sampled in a mosaic of old- growth and secondary forest. They yielded 3545 cerambycid individuals in 49 species. Species richness was almost identical in old growth and secondary forest; but abundance was higher in old-growth. This was largely because several cerambycid species, which appear to be both host and old-growth forest specialists, reached high densities within old-growth forest patches but seldom colonized apparently suitable trees within secondary forest. -

Checklist of the Cerambycidae, or longhorned beetles (Coleoptera) of the Western Hemisphere 2009 Version (updated through 31 December 2008) Miguel A. Monné, and Larry G. Bezark, Compilers Introduction The Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles, longicorns, capricorns, round-headed borers, timber beetles, goat beetles (bock-käfern), or sawyer beetles, comprise one of the largest and most varied families of Coleoptera, with body length alone varying from ± 2.5 mm (Cyrtinus sp.) to slightly over 17 cm (Titanus giganteus). Distributed world-wide from sea level to montane sites as high as 4,200 m elevation wherever their host plants are found, cerambycids have long been a favorite with collectors. Taxonomic interest in the family has been fairly consistent for the past century, but the description of new taxa has accelerated in recent decades thanks to the efforts of Chemsak, Linsley, Giesbert, Martins, Monné, Galileo, Napp, and other workers. This checklist builds upon the efforts of Blackwelder (1946), Chemsak & Linsley (1982), Chemsak, Linsley & Noguera (1992), and Monné & Giesbert (1994), and presently includes nearly 9,000 described species and subspecies, covering the terrestrial hemisphere from Canada and Alaska to Argentina and Chile, and including the Caribbean arc. Adult Cerambycidae, upon which most taxonomic studies in the family have been based, vary widely in their habits. Some species are nocturnal, many are attracted to artificial light, and they also may be found at night on the trunks and branches of their host plants, or on foliage. Diurnal species also may be found on or near their host plants, but many species are attracted to blossoms of shrubs and trees, where they may serve as pollinators. -

NOTES ON THE RHINOTRAGINE BEETLES OF THE FAMILY CERAMBYCIDAE, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW SPECIES By W. S. Fisher Of the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture In rearranging the material of this tribe in the United States National Museum collection, it is necessary to describe a number of new forms, and it seems also necessary to record some of the notes which have accumulated with the specimens in the collection. This tribe contains quite a number of species and genera which are confined to tropical America. They are remarkable both for their generally abbreviated elytra, although this is not an essential char- acter for distinguishing the tribe, and for the mimetic resemblance that many of the species bear to Hymenoptera and other Coleoptera. Although the species are not great favorites with the systematist on account of the difficulty of separating the genera, they are full of in- terest to the general entomologist, because of their mimicry and the many fine illustrations they offer of the mode in which divergent modifications occur in nature. For example, it is most interesting to observe in forms so closely allied that while some species have rudi- mentary elytra and wasplike bodies or beelike posterior tibiae, such as the species of Odontocera^ Tomopterus^ Epimelitta^ etc., others have the elytra developed to the opposite extreme, and, aided by their general aspects and colors, become analogous to other Coleoptera, such as Oxylymma resembling the Galerucinae, the Erythroflatys the Hispinae, and the Ornistomus various species of Lycidae. If we believe in the origin of species by natural variation and selec- tion, the species of Rhinotragini have varied in many directions, and since a protective disguise of one kind or another was necessary to the species, these variations have been gradually extended in many directions to mimic some species which it was advantageous to re- semble.
