Abstract Beetles (Coleoptera) are the most diverse group of animals in the world and occur in many environments. In Atlantic and Amazon rainforests, the scorpion-beetle Onychocerus albitarsis (Cerambycidae), can be found. It has venom glandules and inoculators organs in the antenna extremities. Two injuries in humans are reported, showing different patterns of skin reaction after the stings.

AND STEVEN W. LINGAFELTER Systematic Entomology Laboratory, Agriculture Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution,Washington, DC 20013-7012, U.S.A. Current address: 8920 South Bryerly Ct., Hereford, AZ 85615, U.S.A. ABSTRACT This article presents both ethnoentomological notes on Nahuatl and Mixtec language terms as they are applied to Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and distributional records for species collected during three projects carried out in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico. Some comparative data from other Mesoamerican and Native American languages are discussed. Indigenous common names are mapped onto current taxonomic nomenclature, and an analysis is offered of the logical basis for Indigenous classification: the exclusion of some cerambycids and the inclusion of other beetles in the nominal native “cerambycid” category. New state distributional records for the Cerambycidae collected in this study are offered for Guerrero: Bebelis picta Pascoe, Callipogon senex Dupont, Neocompsa macrotricha Martins, Olenosus ser- rimanus Bates, Ornithia mexicana zapotensis Tippmann, Stenygra histrio Audinet-Serville, Strongylaspis championi Bates, Lissonotus flavocinctus puncticollis Bates, and Nothopleurus lobigenis Bates; and Puebla: Juiaparus mexicanus (Thomson), Ptychodes guttulatus Dillon and Dillon, and Steirastoma senex White. Key Words: linguistics, etymology, Nahuatl, Mixtec, longhorned beetle, wood-borer DOI.org/10.1649/0010-065X-71.2.301 The present article emerges from two language shapes.

  • Checklist of the Cerambycidae, Or Longhorned Beetles (Coleoptera) of the Western Hemisphere 2009 Version (Updated Through 31 December 2008) Miguel A
1 Checklist of the Cerambycidae, or longhorned beetles (Coleoptera) of the Western Hemisphere 2009 Version (updated through 31 December 2008) Miguel A. Monné, and Larry G. Bezark, Compilers Introduction The Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles, longicorns, capricorns, round-headed borers, timber beetles, goat beetles (bock-käfern), or sawyer beetles, comprise one of the largest and most varied families of Coleoptera, with body length alone varying from ± 2.5 mm (Cyrtinus sp.) to slightly over 17 cm (Titanus giganteus). Distributed world- wide from sea level to montane sites as high as 4,200 m elevation wherever their host plants are found, cerambycids have long been a favorite with collectors. Taxonomic interest in the family has been fairly consistent for the past century, but the description of new taxa has accelerated in recent decades thanks to the efforts of Chemsak, Linsley, Giesbert, Martins, Monné, Galileo, Napp, and other workers. This checklist builds upon the efforts of Blackwelder (1946), Chemsak & Linsley (1982), Chemsak, Linsley & Noguera (1992), and Monné & Giesbert (1994), and presently includes nearly 9,000 described species and subspecies, covering the terrestrial hemisphere from Canada and Alaska to Argentina and Chile, and including the Caribbean arc. Adult Cerambycidae, upon which most taxonomic studies in the family have been based, vary widely in their habits. Some species are nocturnal, many are attracted to artificial light, and they also may be found at night on the trunks and branches of their host plants, or on foliage. Diurnal species also may be found on or near their host plants, but many species are attracted to blossoms of shrubs and trees, where they may serve as pollinators.

Abstract: A survey of the Cerambycinae species recorded in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, is presented. The data were based on literature, field work and in the collection of the Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Two hundred ninety three species of Cerambycinae are registered, and this represents about 28% of the species that occur in the Atlantic Rainforest. Nineteen new distribution records are registered. Ninety nine species are illustrated. A comparative table showing the respective number of genera and species of Cerambycinae that occur in the Neotropical Region, Atlantic Rainforest and Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is given. Keywords: Cerambycidae, Coleoptera, inventory, Atlantic Rainforest.

  • Non-Standard Plural Forms (.PDF)
Foreign and Irregular Plurals in CSW by David Sutton **** Now amended for CSW19 **** This document attempts to list all singular nouns in CSW (the official Scrabble word list) that have nine letters or fewer and that have irregular plurals; those plurals are shown together with a brief definition. Ten-letter singular nouns are included where they yield a nine-letter plural. By 'irregular plural' is meant a plural that is not formed according to the usual rules of English orthography, i.e. in one of the following ways: · by the addition of –S, as in CATS · by the addition of –ES, where the word ends in s, x, z, ch or sh, as in PRINCESSES, BOXES, QUARTZES, BEECHES, SASHES. Note that in the case of ch this applies only where ch has the soft sound, not the hard sound as in EPOCH or LOCH, where a simple S is added · by the addition of –ES plus change of a terminal –Y to I, as in LAUNDRIES For completeness I have also included the following categories of word: · words that do not change at all in the plural; these are denoted by a dash in the second column. Note that I have excluded 'collective' nouns that are normally used in the singular but which do have an –S form e.g. one would normally speak of a herd of twenty BISON, but BISONS does exist and might be used when speaking of different individuals. This is unlike MOOSE, where there is no MOOSES* · words ending in –O that take a plural in –OES rather than, or in addition to, –OS · words ending in –I that take a plural in –IES rather than, or in addition to, –IS · words ending in –S or -Z that double the S or Z It should be noted that a great many of these nouns with irregular plurals also have regular plurals.
