The Fluctuation in the National Identification of a Part of the Muslim Population in the People’S Republic of Macedonia (Statistical and Demographic Analysis)
The Fluctuation in the National Identification of a Part of the Muslim Population in the People’s Republic of Macedonia (Statistical and demographic analysis) Borče ILIEVSKI e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article analyzes the statistical and demographic data obtained from the first two censuses taken in the People’s Republic of Macedonia in 1948 and 1953 that show how the national identity of a part of the Muslim population (Turks, Albanians and Macedonians professing Islam) changed. The national identity of a part of the Muslim population at the time the censuses were taken was conditioned by several historical political, social and cultural factors. This is also a reason why these censuses do not give an accurate ethnic picture of the Macedonian society in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In fact, the authentic census data, useful in the making of a demographic analysis of Macedonia’s ethnic structure, are very often imprecise, which may hamper the research of the ethno- demographic characteristics of the Macedonian society. Keywords: Ethno-demographic structure, Census, Muslim population, Turks, Albanians, Macedonian Muslims, National Identification Introduction In the territory of former Yugoslavia, in the censuses taken after the Second World War, certain ethnic groups dramatically increased or decreased dramatically because a part of the population identified themselves differently Borče ILIEVSKI each time. One of the reasons for this was the political circumstances in which the census were conducted and so the censuses -

Tourism Potential of Skopje City Araştırma Makalesi / Research Article TOURISM POTENTIAL OF SKOPJE CITY1 Üsküp Şehrinin Turizm Potansiyeli Gönderim Tarihi / Received: 05.02.2020 Kabul Tarihi / Accepted: 22.06.2020 Doi: https://doi.org/10.31795/baunsobed.685242 Alaattin KIZILÇAOĞLU* Hakan ÖNAL** ABSTRACT: Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is one of the important centers in the Balkans with its convenient location on the Vardar-Morava line, Thessaloniki-Belgrade highway and railway route. Skopje and its immediate surroundings is an area with high tourism potential with its natural, historical and cultural attractions. Skopje, which was under Turkish rule for 520 years, still carries Ottoman traces today and there are a large number of monuments from that time. Skopje attracts local and foreign tourists with the recreation area in Matka Canyon with its ancient settlement, Skupi ancient settlement, castle and churches, Ottoman-era stone bridge and the Old Town with mosques, inns, Turkish baths, mansions unique to Turkish architecture and shops of various artisans. Turkish citizens take the lead among the foreign tourists who visit Skopje where 9,000 of our compatriots reside. In the framework of this study, field studies were carried out in the city and its vicinity in order to promote Skopje’s Ottoman heritage and other tourist attractions and to present the tourism potential of Skopje by providing print and visual documents from national and international sources. History of the Macedonian People
HISTORY OF THE MACEDONIAN PEOPLE 1 2 INSTITUTE OF NATIONAL HISTORY HISTORY OF THE MACEDONIAN PEOPLE SKOPJE 2008 3 Editor: Todor Chepreganov, Ph.D. Authors: Aneta Shukarova, Ph.D. Mitko B. Panov, Ph.D. Dragi Georgiev, Ph.D. Krste Bitovski, Ph.D. Academician Ivan Katardziev Vanche Stojchev, Ph.D. Novica Veljanovski, Ph.D. Todor Chepreganov, Ph.D. 4 MACEDONIA IN THE PREHISTORIC TIME On the territory of Macedonia an active life is registered even in the earliest stages of the human prehistory. The climate, geomorphology, and other natural factors on the whole territory of Macedonia were pre- conditions for establishment of an organized life and for the creation of different cultures whose evolution had a continuous course from the pe- riod of the first agricultural communities to the end of the Iron Age. The archeological and anthropological researches of the artifacts from the first settlements in Macedonia are where the basic knowledge which is crucial for the explanation of the origin of the later populations as well as the ori- gin of the historical and cultural influences and movements came from. The territory of Macedonia is situated in the core of the Balkan’s natural crossroads and connects the two largest cultural spheres: the Ae- gean and the Anatolian, as the nuclei of the oldest farming and stock- breeding communities, or the inner part of the Balkan Peninsula and the Middle Europe. The natural routes along the river valleys have the partic- ular role from this aspect; the valley of the river Vardar, which joins the valley of the river Morava enables communication of the Aegean World and Panonia while Strumeshnica, through lower reaches of the river Struma makes a link between southern Thrace and the front part of the Middle Asia. -
