Representations of WWI in Italian Fascist Cinema Francesco Bono Dipartimento di Filosofia, Scienze Sociali, Umane e della Formazione, Università degli Studi di Perugia, Perugia, Italy Abstract The present essay investigates the representation of the First World War in Italian fascist cinema by analyzing some of the major films about the war made during the Fascist regime and, notably, Marco Elter’s Le scarpe al sole (1935), Giovacchino Forzano’s 13 uomini e un cannone (1936) and Oreste Biancoli’s Piccolo alpino (1940). The films will be examined from an original and specific angle, devoting special attention to their portrayal of the Austrian enemy. Little consideration has been paid so far in scholarly research to this aspect. The essay will specifically address the question, investigating the changing representation of WWI and, particularly, the metamorphosis of Austria from foe to friend in Italian cinema in the course of the twenty years of Fascist regime. In doing so, the essay will place the above films against the background of the Fascist regime’s foreign policy, with special regard to the Italian-Austrian politics of friendship during the 1930s, followed at the end of the decade by Italy’s alliance with Nazi-Germany and the birth of the Rome-Berlin axis.     Caratteristiche fisiche del suono Che cos’è l’acustica L’acustica è una disciplina scientifica che si occupa delle caratteristiche dei suoni cioè studia come gli effetti sonori si producono e si propagano. Che cos’è il suono Il suono è un fenomeno fisico che stimola il senso dell’udito: esso è provocato dal rapido movimen- to (vibrazione) di un qualsiasi corpo (una corda, un elastico, un pezzo di legno, una colonna d’aria, ecc.) Esso è una forma di energia in qualche modo paragonabile alla luce o all’elettricità. I suoni sono semplicemente onde create da vibrazioni ottenute in migliaia di modi diversi: pizzicando la corda di una chitarra, soffiando nel bocchino di una tromba, sfregando un archetto sulle corde di un violino, percotendo un pezzo di legno o di metallo. Suono e rumore Qual è la differenza tra suono e rumore ? Le differenze possono essere di tipo soggettivo oppure oggettivo . Comunemente si tende a collegare la parola suono a qualcosa di piacevole e la parola rumore a qualcosa di fastidioso, ma questa differenza è piuttosto soggettiva e legata al contesto in cui un suo- no o un rumore sono inseriti. Il rombo del motore di un’auto di formula 1 può essere un fastidioso rumore oppure un bellissimo suono: dipende se chi lo ascolta è un appassionato di corse automobi- listiche oppure un amante della natura e della tranquillità. L’ acustica stabilisce comunque una differenza precisa ( oggettiva ) tra suono e rumore, basata sull’analisi delle vibrazioni: se le vibrazioni sono regolari (uguali una all’altra) abbiamo un suono; se sono irregolari (diseguali tra loro) abbiamo un rumore.

Lo ringrazio perché, al prezzo del modesto impegno richiesto dalla stesura di queste poche pagine, l’antologia da lui curata mi ha riportato l’eco del mondo fantastico che ha fatto da sfondo alla mia infanzia: un tempo remoto eppur vicinissimo se scandito dai versi e dai canti raccolti da Ridolfi in que- sto volume. Sono nato nel 1920, quando la memoria della guerra era ancora vivissima. Lo sarebbe rimasta a lungo; così come a lungo e drammaticamente se ne sareb- bero sentite le conseguenze.
