Islamic Studies and Religious Education bi-annual Curriculum

Subject Leader: Mr Abdullah AS Patel, Deputy Head Teacher

Intent

We are committed to providing a curriculum with breadth that allows all our pupils to be able to achieve the following:

● Build Islamic character, through the termly topics, and a special focus on character building in the final term.

● To learn relevant knowledge to their religious preferences and the values they come with from home.

● To challenges, motivate, inspire and lead them to a lifelong interest in learning, using their Islamic values as a base for further religious exploration, in further education.

● To facilitate pupils to achieve their personal best and grow up to be with a strong sense of identity.

● To create a link between different subjects to give the pupils and appreciation of the breadth and connected nature of learning.

● To promote active community involvement, we will ensure pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain, by teaching universal human values, and dedicating time in the year to learning specifically about British Values.

Implementation

To help us achieve our curriculum intent, we will:

● Offer a quality-assured curriculum using multiple syllabi, and ensuring all lessons are well-planned and effectively delivered.

● Provide pupils and parents with ‘Tarbiyah’ checklists to monitor their character-building progress.

● Where appropriate, we will provide pupils with the tools to learn more effectively by means of practical demonstrations.

● To build a sense of tolerance and respect, we will arrange trips to visit different places of worship to learn about others and appreciate their teachings.

● Demonstrate the cross-curricular links between Islamic Studies and other subjects, e.g. focusing on reading and writing.

● Ensure that topics taught are coherent throughout the school, from lesson to lesson, term to term and year to year, to ensure learning is embedded well.

● Retention of subject knowledge and skills is done through verbal tests/ quizzes and recaps at the end/start of most lessons and topics.

Daily reading lessons

Teachers will use the Arabic books “Ahsan al-Qawaid", “Para Amm”, “Panj Para” and the Noble Quran to teach the pupils from to help their linguistic skills. Without mastering Arabic reading, children cannot move on to the speaking and writing stages due to the complexity of the language. There are daily assessment sheets teachers use to inform them of pupil progress and which enable them to look ahead and plan the coming lessons. The focus on Quranic recitation is on the fluency of recital and correctness of pronunciation (). Rushing when reciting the Quran is not a priority at Al-Ashraf. The lessons are taught with pupils split into groups, some with the teachers, others independently with ‘team captains’, as a carousel.

Du'as and Surats – Fridays

Our teachers will teach from the book “A Child’s Gift”, to teach the pupils their du'as and surats, based on their year groups.

The children will learn and recite du’as and surats on alternate weeks, learning a minimum of 2 lines per session.

The du'as syllabus is self-explanatory, and alongside memorizing the Arabic wording of the text, teachers are expected to cover the English translation, although memorizing it is not a basic requirement.

The surahs syllabus can be found on the first page of every year group in the book.

Every pupil is expected to have progression all the du'as and surats for their year group by the end of the academic year. Those on MyPlans will have individual objectives which will be discussed with the teachers and parents accordingly.

At least one session per half-term will be used to consolidate what has been learnt over the course of the term.

As is clear from the table above, the children are initially exposed to a simple view of each religion, focusing on its core beliefs and simple rituals, which then become more detailed as they progress through the years. We feel it is more effective to learn a blanket view of the religions in KS1 before focusing on particulars in KS2. RE (other religions) is taught during the Islamic Studies hour, over a couple of weeks at the end of the term which helps children focus on the topic and makes it easier to keep track of for the teacher.

Impact

Our Islamic Studies and Religious Education Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If pupils are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods, made of predominantly of knowledge and skills:

A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes; Tracking of gains in each quiz; Pupil discussions about their learning; Two separate yearly written assessments and consistent verbal tests.

By the end of the curriculum delivery, all pupils are expected to pick up necessary knowledge and skills. They should be able to practically perform the religious rites practically, for example, Wudu, Salah, Janaza, Masah etc. Pupils should also be able to recall and remember du'as and surahs which are to be recited daily. They should learn interpersonal skills, how to communicate with others, Muslims and non, and how to live their everyday lives as law-abiding British citizens with a strong sense of religious identity. In addition to this, their Islamic character must be exemplary, and their everyday lives should contain plentiful examples of practicing whatever they have progression. Their knowledge base should allow them to thrive as Muslims in 21st C Britain.
