Ofcourse, The LittleTheatre's prime reason for beingis to provideentertainment, but it servesanother purpose, too. Eachsummer, for a selectedgroup of youngpeople, the theatreis an educationalinstitution. These specialyoung people, formerlycalled ap- prentices, now referred to as theatreinterns, are pursuing careers in theatre, either as performersor techniciansand they come here for valuableon-the-job experience. lnterns are the principalwork force of any summerstock theatre. They do everything-from performingto janitorialwork, from sewingcostumes to operatingspotlights, from constructing sets to sellingtickets. Unlikemany theatres, The Little Theatredoes not charge tuition from its interns; to the contrary, most Little Theatre internsreceive token scholarships and all receivefree housing in the somewhat-less-thanpalatial Intern ResidenceHall. The timespent learning and doingduring the theatre seasoncan be used for collegecredit or appliedtoward requirements for an Actors'Equity card, dependingupon the programbeing pursued. Many Little Theatreapprentices have gone on to achievesuccess in variousphases of show business. It is a sourceof pride for this theatre to have had a part of shaping the careersof thesetalented people.
