DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

What is the line between poverty and security? This is the question that attracted me to Vivian Kerr’s beautiful script. It is so sparse, so minimal with its words, yet so thoughtful. What came to me first was the image of a woman, like so many women, trying to hold herself together on the outside, but completely falling apart on the inside, uncertain of her place as a mother, a sister, a working woman. I wanted to build a world of contrasting images: a respectable Toyota Prius juxtaposed against a barren Los Angeles landscape and a woman in a pretty, purple silk blouse driving past a city of tents. Adding to this contrast, is the crux of the film, a family relationship, like a lot of family relationships, that is full of hope but is at its core dishonest and inauthentic. Vivian Kerr and Anthony Rapp brilliantly portray the estrangement of a brother and sister who say so much, yet don’t say anything at all. A bright and cheery color palette, full of yellows, purples and pinks, with beautifully composed shots, contrasts with the ugly truth of how close we all are to the edge, and shows that it can happen to anyone, anywhere.
