2014 03 14 E-News Vol 1 No 7 OKGA E-News 14 th March 2014 Vol. 1 No. 7 Senior Knoxonians – AGM & Luncheon The Senior Knoxonians held their AGM & Luncheon on Wednesday 12 th March. Both were well attended, with almost 70 members, including one flying from Perth, and another from Adelaide! Ian MacPherson (OKG ’55) was re-elected as the President, and the committee were unanimously re-appointed. Following the AGM, a luncheon was held in the Portrait Room, with the guest of honour being Peter Clary Castrission OAM (OKG ’01). Clary gave an inspirational talk about the 40K Foundation, an organisation that he setup to assist in getting education to under- privileged children in India. The luncheon was also addressed by the Headmaster, Mr John Weeks, who gave an informative talk on how the school has progressed in its 90 year history, and Knox’s possible links and influence in China after his talks with government officials in Beijing and Shanghai last week. Clary Castrission addresses the Senior Knoxonians See below for more photos from the luncheon. Mentoring “Anyone over 45 will network their way into a job, rather than apply for one” This was a headline in a major newspaper this week. In a tight jobs market, it can often be the case of ‘who you know’ not ‘what you know’. The OKGA currently has a list of 150 mentors across many different industries. They are willing to help our younger members if they need assistance or direction in their careers. Contact the OKGA office, and we can get you connected. Sochi Winter Paralympics We wish Toby Kane (OKG ’04) well as he competes at the Winter Paralympics. At 19, Toby was the youngest member of the Australian Paralympic Team, where he won a bronze medal in the super-G at the 2006 Torino Games. After being involved in a car accident at a young age, resulting in the amputation of his lower right leg, Toby was 10 when identified by talent scouts whilst he was on a family skiing holiday at Smiggins Hole. At age 11 Toby was invited to join the Australian Winter development team, and at 17 was a regular member of the Australian Paralympic squad. Click here to follow the team’s results. BtN: Episode 6 Transcript 11/3/14 Coming up Parent’s versus kids: Who's more addicted to screen-time at home? Find out how much sugar you're sipping without even knowing it. And we meet some of Australia's gun athletes competing at the winter Paralympics. Hey, I'm Nathan and, of course, this is BtN. That stuff will all be up a bit later on. But first, there's some big news about a plane crash to hear about in the wire. The Wire A Malaysia airlines flight carrying six Australians has gone missing. The plane was carrying 239 people when it disappeared on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It lost contact with air traffic controllers without reporting any problems. Lots of planes and ships have been sent to the area, including two Australian Air Force planes. So far an oil slick and what looks like debris have been spotted. Authorities are looking into what might have happened. ******* There's still plenty going on in Ukraine. Most of it centred around an area called Crimea. Last week, Russia sent troops there. Now the Crimean parliament's decided it wants to become part of Russia. But it's up to the people to vote on it this weekend. All of this is making the new Ukrainian government angry. It says Crimea is part of Ukraine and it's not going to give it up. ******* And how would you like to get paid to eat your veggies? Over in the US kids are getting around 25 cents a day to eat their greens.
