ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith Presentation of the Gifts and Preparation of the Altar

After the Prayers of the Faithful, the Liturgy of the Word has ended and the Liturgy of the begins. Several things happen during the first part, including the Presentation of the Gifts and their preparation at the altar. Usually a joyful hymn will start as a few members of the congregation will carry the gifts up the aisle of the nave to the border of the sanctuary, where the will be waiting to receive the gifts of bread and wine. At the same time, the collection will be taken up.

Many people today grumble at the collection, looking at it as some kind of Church tax, but it serves a real pur- pose helping the local parish subsist and serve the spiritual and physical needs of its parishioners, and helping the diocese as well. It also serves a serious spiritual purpose and links us with Christians since the beginning. It is certain that the collection has been part of the Mass, in the exact place it is in today, since the 2nd century when St. Justin described the Mass to his pagan adversaries. Back then, it wasn’t just cash; it was any- thing the members of the community had. Someone would be picked to bring the special gifts of bread and wine which would become the Eucharist, but all kinds of things such as animals, eggs, wheat, water, blankets, and other necessities were brought up and given to the Church to help it in turn serve the community. Every- one would bring forth the best of what they had, as Abel had done in Genesis. To be like Cain and bring forth your leftovers was considered an insult to the community and to God. This gift, whether it was in goods back then or the money we give today, is a symbol of the gift of our lives which we give back to God, and a thanks- giving for all the other gifts He has given us over the previous week. As the collection and the presentation of the gifts is going on, a deacon and altar servers will begin to prepare the altar for the re-presentation of the once and for all Holy Sacrifice.

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become

At Mass—WE PRESENT OUR GIFTS Draw the Bread and Wine, and add your own Sacrifice in the Basket Last week we ended the Liturgy of the Word. And this week we look at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Liturgy means “public prayer.” We now enter into Thanksgiving; thanking Jesus for His sacrifice, to- gether in prayer.

To begin, we must offer our part of the sacrifice to the altar. While the priest receives bread and wine, it is also our opportunity to share something with the Church. This is when offertory baskets are passed around so we can put in our tithe, or donation for the week. This is our sacrifice for the community. “A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, ‘Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contribu- tors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has con- tributed all she had, her whole livelihood.’” Mark 12: 42 -44

Jesus loves when we share, and when we feel that sacri- fice. Give enough that it hurts. Give like Jesus. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, August 22: St. Antoninus of —Penitent and Martyr St. Antoninus was born in Rome sometime during the second century. He served as an imperial executioner for the Roman Empire during the reign of Commodus. After taking part in the trial of St. Eusebius, Antoninus experienced a miraculous vision and was con- verted to Christianity. He openly proclaimed that he had become a Christian and was brought before Judge Vitellius who condemned him to death. Antoninus was beheaded and buried along the Aurelian road in 186. Monday, August 23: St. Philip Benizi—Confessor St. Philip was born on August 15, 1233 in Florence, to a wealthy family. After studying medicine in Paris and Padua, he worked as a doctor. In 1253, he abandoned this profession to join the Servite Order in Florence as a lay brother. Six years later, he was ordained a priest. Due to his skilled preaching, he was made prior general of the Servites in 1267. He aided St. Juliana in establishing the Third Order of Servites. Philip showed great com- passion for the poor. In one instance, he gave his cloak to a leper who was miraculously cured of his condition. Word of this miracle spread, and Philip was believed to be the frontrunner for to replace Pope Clement IV in 1268. Not desiring this honor, Philip hid in a cave until Gregory X had been elected to the papacy.

Tuesday, August 24: St. Bartholomew—Apostle St. Bartholomew, the son of Tolomai, was born in Cana and became one of Christ’s twelve Apostles. It is tradi- tionally believed that Bartholomew is Nathaniel described in the Gospel of John. Bartholomew (Nathaniel) was brought to Christ by St. Philip. Jesus said of him, “Here is a true Israelite.—There is no duplicity in him.” When he asked Christ how He knew him, Jesus responded that he saw him under the fig tree. Bartholomew (Nathaniel) responded “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” It’s traditionally believed that Bartholo- mew preached the Gospel in Asia after Christ’s resurrection, including Lycaonia, India, and finally in Armenia, where he received martyrdom by flaying and beheading at the order of King Astyages. Wednesday, August 25: Bl. Luis Sotelo—Priest and Martyr Bl. Luis Sotelo was born to a noble family in Sevilla, Spain on September 6, 1574. After studying at the University of Salamanca, Luis became a Franciscan Friar and was ordained a priest. He was sent to Manila in the Philippines in 1600 to prepare for missionary work. Luis arrived in Japan in 1601 but was exiled from the country two years later. He returned to his native Spain. In 1622 he went back to Japan and was arrested while preaching in Nagasaki. Luis was sent to Shimabara where he was burned to death. Thursday, August 26: St. Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars— St. Theresa was born in Catalonia, Spain on January 9, 1843. As a young girl she showed a strong interest in aiding the poor, often bringing the poor to her aunt’s home to receive assistance. She applied to enter the Poor Claires but was rejected. Teresa then became a a Carmelite tertiary and a teacher. At the advice of her spiritual director, she founded a new religious congregation on Janu- ary 27, 1872 which became known as the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Age. By the time she passed away, more than fifty homes had been established. Friday, August 27: St. Monica—Widow St. Monica was born in 333 at Tagaste in northern Africa. As a young woman, Monica married a Pagan man named Patricius. Her husband had a violent temper, but she endured it with patience and love, even- tually converting Patricius to the Faith. Two of Monica’s children, Perpetua and Navigius, entered reli- gious life, but her son, Augustine, fell into error while living in Carthage. Monica regularly prayed for his conversion, and she even followed him to Milan. In August of 386, she finally witnessed her son’s bap- tism. While on the road back to Africa, Monica fell ill and passed away at Civitavecchia in 387.

Saturday, August 28: Bl. Teresa Bracco—Virgin and Martyr Bl. Teresa Bracco was born in Santa Giulia, Italy on February 24, 1924. She was very devout from her youth, with a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She used to walk a mile each day to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion. Teresa was often found in front of the tabernacle in state of ecstasy. She kept above her bed an image of Ven. which read “Death rather than sin.” During World War II, Teresa was with two other girls when they were seized by soldiers. One soldier took Teresa to a secluded place in the woods where he intended to rape her, but she fought back. The soldier became enraged and choked her before shooting her twice and stomping on her skull. She passed away that day on August 28, 1944. LIVESTREAMS LECTOR SCHEDULE

STEWARDSHIP OF OUR BECOME A PARISHIONER TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on AUGUST 15, 2021 the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the PARISH COLLECTIONS Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, TOTAL $16,300.94 parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial con- Weekly Budget $15,833.00 tribution or donates online.
