The UK Linguistics Olympiad 2018 Round 2 Problem 1 Hark the Heraldry Angels Sing Heraldry is the study of rank and heraldic arms, and there is a part which looks particularly at the way that coats-of-arms and shields are put together. The language for describing arms is known as blazon and derives many of its terms from French. The aim of blazon is to describe heraldic arms unambiguously and as concisely as possible. On the next page are some blazon descriptions that correspond to the shields (escutcheons) A-L. However, the descriptions and the shields are not in the same order. 1. Quarterly 1 & 4 checky vert and argent 2 & 3 argent three gouttes gules two one 2. Azure a bend sinister argent in dexter chief four roundels sable 3. Per pale azure and gules on a chevron sable four roses argent a chief or 4. Per fess checky or and sable and azure overall a roundel counterchanged a bordure gules 5. Per chevron azure and vert overall a lozenge counterchanged in sinister chief a rose or 6. Quarterly azure and gules overall an escutcheon checky sable and argent 7. Vert on a fess sable three lozenges argent 8. Gules three annulets or one two impaling sable on a fess indented azure a rose argent 9. Argent a bend embattled between two lozenges sable 10. Per bend or and argent in sinister chief a cross crosslet sable 11. Gules a cross argent between four cross crosslets or on a chief sable three roses argent 12. HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display. -

HONOURS AND ARMS: LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL ASPECTS OF PRACTICE CONCERNING HERALDRY AND ROYAL HONOURS IN NEW ZEALAND G A Macaulay New Zealand has progressed from colony to dominion to fully inde- pendent realm, but several aspects of official practice in relation to sym- bolic and ceremonial matters appear both to ignore resultant constitutional realities and to be in conflict with the current law of New Zealand. The Crown on whose behalf the Treaty of Waitangi was signed was the Crown of the United Kingdom' and until this century there was only one indivisible Crown in the British Empire. However, the exercise of greater self-government by the dominions and the changes in their relationship to the United Kingdom precipitated by the First World War eroded the validity of the doctrine of the indivisibility of the Crown. Lord Denning declared in 1982 that by at least 1926 (the year of the Balfour Declaration) the Crown "was separate and divided for each self-governing d~minion";~and the Statute of Westminster 19313- de- spite its preamble which recited that the several dominions were united in their allegiance to one Crown - gave legislative recognition to the reality of separate Crowns for each of the self-governing dominions which adopted the Statute as part of their municipal law, as New Zealand even- tually did in 1947.4 As early as 1936 there was the curious phenomenon that for a few days there were two Kings in the Empire as the abdication of Edward VIII took effect at different times in different dominion^;^ and any of the monarchical -

Mon may refer to any symbol. Kamon refer specifically to family crests. Similar function to badges, crests and family crests in European heraldry. Where European family crests are named for families, mons and kamons were named for the object represented, i.e. The Windsor Coat of Arms vs. Chrysanthemum, (the kamon of the imperial family since the 13th century). 2. Originated as fabric patterns, (6c – 8c) to be used on clothes in order to distinguish individuals or signify membership in a specific clan or organization Kamon, meaning family crest, can also be read as “family textile figure.” Most commonly seen in a roundel, encircling a figure of plant, animal, nature, architecture, object or design letter. 3. By the 12th century mons were used by nobility and the upper class to announce their authority They used them on carts, flags and clothing. In an illiterate society, they were useful symbols of recognition. 4. During the Warrior Society (15c -16c.) kamon played an important role to the feudal lords, identifying classes, and distinguishing allies from enemies on the battlefield. 5. In the early Edo period (17c-19c) only high class families used the family crest. When Tokugawa Shogunate united Japan, all battles stopped and Japan experienced peace and prosperity for over 200 years. By the middle of the Edo period, mons and kamons are frequently seen in Ukiyo-e prints.
