  • CUL Keller Archive Catalogue
HANS KELLER ARCHIVE: working copy A1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49 A1/1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49: independent work This section contains all Keller’s unpublished manuscripts dating from the 1940s, apart from those connected with his collaboration with Margaret Phillips (see A1/2 below). With the exception of one pocket diary from 1938, the Archive contains no material prior to his arrival in Britain at the end of that year. After his release from internment in 1941, Keller divided himself between musical and psychoanalytical studies. As a violinist, he gained the LRAM teacher’s diploma in April 1943, and was relatively active as an orchestral and chamber-music player. As a writer, however, his principal concern in the first half of the decade was not music, but psychoanalysis. Although the majority of the musical writings listed below are undated, those which are probably from this earlier period are all concerned with the psychology of music. Similarly, the short stories, poems and aphorisms show their author’s interest in psychology. Keller’s notes and reading-lists from this period indicate an exhaustive study of Freudian literature and, from his correspondence with Margaret Phillips, it appears that he did have thoughts of becoming a professional analyst. At he beginning of 1946, however, there was a decisive change in the focus of his work, when music began to replace psychology as his principal subject. It is possible that his first (accidental) hearing of Britten’s Peter Grimes played an important part in this change, and Britten’s music is the subject of several early articles.

PROGRAMME NOTES Quartet for Strings, Op. 54, No. 2 (1788) Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) The opening C Major statement is dramatically throttled by silence which, on its return, Haydn impishly lengthens by a bar. The second subject resembles that of the previous quartet - Haydn had not quite got the rhythm out of his system. In the Adagio, the first violin introduces a chorale which the second violin takes over, allowing the former to weave a Hungarian Gypsy descant in a precisely notated rubato. This dissolves into a minuet whose coyness is offset by an impassioned trio featuring the augmented triad. The finale is a bit of a surprise, particularly to the cellist who is required to ascend the fingerboard into regions long dulled and cobwebbed from disuse.

PosTHUMous (1820) The Quartettsatz ("Quartet Piece") is the first of the four great string quartets Franz Schubert wrote in the last eight years of his life. A compact powerhouse of writing, it remained, like his famous Eighth Symphony and Schubert himself, unfinished at the time of his death. Yet it set the tone for the three completed masterpieces, which followed. At his death at the wrenching age of 30, Schubert was known mostly for his vocal works, dances and piano music. Even his companions knew of little more.

Dear Customer, Clara Schumann has been posthumously enjoying a mini-revival of interest in her work this year, the 200th anniversary of her birth being just around the corner. We have seen around a dozen new releases this year (so far) that feature her music in some fashion - around double what we would usually see in an entire year. July is no exception, and it is especially pleasing to see a major label like Decca pick up on the celebrations, given their ability to expose their recordings to a slightly wider audience. Theirs is also one of the few discs that is devoted to her music alone, and features Isata Kanneh-Mason (sister of Sheku) playing the Piano Concerto alongside a selection of solo piano works and transcriptions. Also of note is a new disc from Avie that includes some of her songs, coupled with both of the Liederkreis cycles by her husband. We managed to get a sneak preview and can report that tenor Kyle Stegall is superb, beautifully accompanied by Eric Zivian on a period instrument. We are thoroughly looking forward to getting to know this repertoire better. Nicola Benedetti has returned to the studio for the first time in three years, having worked with Wynton Marsalis on the world premiere recording of his jazz-infused Violin Concerto.

  • People's Life and Music in Vienna in Early 20Th Century
People's Life and Music in Vienna in early 20th Century Yoshio MASUDA and Elisabeth HUBL* (*Department of Chemistry, University of Vienna) Vienna is a unique city in Europe, located in the "Mitteleuropa," the former territory of the Habsburg Empire. It was the center of politics and culture, keeping the throne of Holy Roman Empire of Germany for several hundred years, dominating the whole of Ger many, until the Napoleon War early in 19th century. In fact, Viennese culture devel oped afterward through the century, as can be seen in science, literature, philosophy, arts, music, etc., It was the case after the Empire had lost its political influence on the whole Europe, therefore the time, the 19th century, being called "Golden Autumn"(H. Spiel, 1987). It is said that the 19 th century continued until 1914 in Vienna, when World War I broke out. Kaiser Franz-Josef ascended the throne in 1848 during the time of revolution and stayed as Kaiser even after the unification of all Germany by Prussia, until 1916 when he died. It thus can be said that the period of Kaiser Franz-Josef was the high time for Vienna which, under hard situation of wars and revolutions, fostered its unparalleled culture. In order to look at this unique Viennese culture, we describe Wienerlieder and related music and discuss them in connection with people in Vienna during the time of turning of the century until Anschluss. 1. Wiener Lieblinge aus seinerzeit. In 1934 there was a song "Der Doktor Lueger hat mir die Hand gereicht (Once Doc tor Lueger gave me his hand)'' which was among "Wiener Lieblinge von seinerzeit" sung by the people of Vienna at the time.

  • Music Theory on the Radio:Theme and Temporality in Hans Keller’S First Functional Analysis
DOI: 10.1111/musa.12129 WILLIAM O’HARA MUSIC THEORY ON THE RADIO:THEME AND TEMPORALITY IN HANS KELLER’S FIRST FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS On the evening of 7 September 1957, listeners to the BBC Radio’s Third Programme were treated to a unique broadcast of Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor, K. 421. The performance, by the Aeolian String Quartet, was punctuated between movements by several minutes of additional music composed by the critic Hans Keller (1919–1985). The broadcast was the public’s first exposure to what Keller called ‘functional analysis’ (abbreviated FA), or, as he more vividly put it in a magazine article previewing the broadcast, ‘the musical analysis of music’ (Keller 1994, pp. 126–8).1 The wheels that set this event in motion had begun turning nearly a year and a half earlier. On 28 April 1956 Keller sent an unsolicited proposal to Roger Fiske, the producer in charge of music lectures for the BBC. In it he described an idea for a radio broadcast that would build upon the analytical method he had recently sketched in a pair of essays on Mozart’s music: a detailed study of Mozart’s C major Piano Concerto, K. 503, in The Musical Times (Keller 1956a), and a more wide-ranging chapter titled ‘The Chamber Music’ in The Mozart Companion (Keller 1956b). In the letter, Keller describes his project and what the audience might hear: I propose an hour’s broadcast, wordless throughout, which would attempt to analyse a work or movement of your own choice according to my method of analysis.
