Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is an urban planning approach that encourages a modal shif from private to public transportation. Tis shif can generate additional benefts from a sustainability perspective. Tis study aims to assess the efciency of TOD by applying the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. Te ridership of public transportation is considered as the direct output characteristic of TOD efciency, and nine indicators of ridership are selected as inputs on the basis of the core concepts of TOD. Tese concepts include density, diversity, and design (3Ds). Te Tokyu Den-en Toshi Line in Japan is presented as a typical case of TOD because this line includes TOD and non-TOD stations. Assessing and comparing the results of all railway stations reveal that almost all indicator values of non-TOD stations are higher than those of TOD stations. Te results suggest that TOD planning and programs are inefcient in terms of ridership generation. Tis implication, however, may be attributed to the inadequacy of the selected indicators for TOD assessment. Te results obtained afer adding operation year as input indicators and removing transfer station show that TOD stations perform efciently and in accordance with expectations. Tis response indicates that the inclusion of infuential factors is necessary for equitable TOD assessment. Terefore, other infuential factors must be considered when evaluating the efciency of TOD-based stations with diferent inherent attributes. In addition, the design input with the largest impact on all inefcient units was identifed, suggesting that management of bus service and railway system should be well enhanced. 1. Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a strategy that accommodates increasing urban population with reduced impacts on the transport network and the environment. Although, the effects of these TOD’s on traffic flows on the railway networks is less well documented. This research focusses on determining the effects of land-use and infrastructure developments in station areas on the traffic flow of the railway network. These effects are studied based on the case of the Tokyu Den-En Toshi line, an urban railway line in Tokyo, Japan. To better understand the dynamics between accessibility and activities in station areas the Node-Place (N-P) model was used. The effects of changing station area node and place functions on station use were determined based on a linear regression model. The distribution of link loads on the Den-En Toshi line resulting from the predicted station use was modelled using a growth factor method. Additionally, insights in the history of the Den-En Toshi line and practical experiences were gathered based on expert interview with Tokyu Corporation employees.

    (ENGLISH/英語)No.102 KAWASAKI INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION (304) 「岡本太郎美術館企画展 アマゾンの侍たち」について The Taro Okamoto Museum of Art is now hosting an exhibition which compares the thinking of Taro Okamoto with the lifeways of the Kayapo, an indigenous people of the Amazon jungle. In addition to the usual ways of introducing such things in a museum, the exhibition has a more experiential side to it: you can paint your face with pigments made from fruits and berries, for example, or dress yourself up in ornaments like the Kayapo use and have your picture taken, and things like that. There’s a narrated slide show to see as well. More information can be found at the Museum’s homepage: http://www.taromuseum.jp/ The exhibition runs from Saturday July 14th to Monday September 17th.
