ONLINE EDITION #TimeForHeroes

Tuesday 3rd November 2020 MARGATE FC v

EAST THURROCK UNITED FC Kick Off—7:45pm

Welcome

Good evening and welcome to Hartsdown Park for what is most likely going to be our last game for a few weeks due to the National Lockdown that starts on Thursday 5th November.

Tonight, we welcome East Thurrock for a Pitching-In Isthmian game with both teams needing the 3 points to climb away from the bottom of the table. Our Visitors sit one point below us in 21st with 5 points from their first 9 games.

We are coming off the back of a 4-2 away win against Aylesbury in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy, with new signing Norman Wabo and Noel Leighton each scoring a brace for the Gate. Our reward is a home tie against Burgess Hill Town, with the date TBC as the FA consider the impact of the new national lockdown.

The Club were also delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Dominic Vose who joins Saunders from Kingstonian having previously played for Bromley, Whitehawk and Dulwich Hamlet. His registration was confirmed yesterday, and he is available for selection tonight.

As we move into a unprecedented period for everyone we are awaiting further guidance from the and the FA as to what the schedule will look like for the remainder of the season.

We hope to share this with you soon, but in the meantime let’s all get behind Jay and the players and enjoy the game tonight to the fullest, as it may be our last for a little while!

#TimeForHeroes

The Gate have a home draw in the next round of the FA Trophy. Margate will welcome Burgess Hill Town in the FA Trophy First Round proper. The date for this tie is to be confirmed.

3 From the Manager Good evening and welcome to Paul Martin and all his staff and players.

We have had a very tough few weeks as a group with obviously a few losses on the bounce which is always hard to take!

I’ve felt in certain games we have got what we deserved against the likes of Cheshunt and Bognor, but in other games we have just not had enough in the final third to hurt teams especially when I look at the Lewes and Hornchurch games.

I honestly believe we could be sitting more comfortable in the league, but the facts are we aren’t and so tonight is a big game for both sides if your looking at current standings. East Thurrock are going through a bit of a transition after years of having John Coventry at the helm, but they always attract good players so I’m expecting a tough game.

It was great to get a good win against Aylesbury on Sunday in what was a really hard fought game, but give credit to the lads they kept going and our quality shone through in the end. It was also good to see new signing Norman Wabo get on the score sheet and also Noel back amongst the goals.

Please get behind the boys tonight as you always do especially as it may be our last game for a while.

Fingers crossed it won’t be.

Cheers Jay From the Chairman Good evening and hello everyone,

Allow me to welcome the board, players and supporters of East Thurrock to Hartsdown for what is likely to be our last game before we go into a short lockdown.

It is a difficult and troublesome time for everyone so I must say a big thank you to everybody who has joined us tonight, your support means a lot to the team and is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

It’s been a great week for Jay and the lads winning in the FA Trophy on Sunday and adding Norman Wabo and Dominic Vose to the squad. I’m looking forward to seeing them in action tonight and in the future as Jay adds the quality he’s been looking for to improve the team.

I do hope you all enjoy your time at Hartsdown Park this evening and I hope it isn’t too long before we see you again.

Stay safe.

Terry Painter

12 5 SUPPORTERS CLUB

Okay. Another Tuesday night football match. This time at home to East Thurrock who many thought before a ball was kicked would be one to watch this season.

At our last home fixture we lost to League leaders Worthing and Social Media certainly had a wide expression of opinions flying around, mostly positive, but some very personal...... to such a degree that the administrator had to shut further comment down on the different threads.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but they are just that....opinions.

The Supporters Club believe that win, lose or draw we will support the team and Jay. We have faith that he is laying the foundations to produce a successful team within the restrictions he is working under.

Some of those restrictions can be altered like the training ground problem and the budget with the help of the 12th Man scheme. Other things that have a bearing on player recruitment we cannot change like our location.

One of the easiest things we can all do is get together to support the team and vocally be the 12th Man. One of the Social Media postings hit the nail on the head stating that the atmosphere has gone at Hartsdown Park at home games.

It used to be great in the past and can have a great effect on the team and their performance. Conversely all the negativity aimed at the team has a detrimental effect as Jay and the players do read Social Media.

I wonder how the 17 year old who has just made it into the team feels when he reads some of the comments, never mind the rest of the players, who are as gutted as we are, but haven’t just played the 90 minutes the supporters has seen, but have trained for many hours and given their best.

Jay has a young team in the middle of a global pandemic back on its second wave and up until now also had a training ground problem. We can all get behind the boys to show our support and of course express our opinions, but if they are negative we should express them in a constructive manner.

It is great to see the Ladies team going from strength to strength and is proudly sitting on top of the division following wins against Ramsgate, Maidstone, Long Lane and Aylesford. For those who attend the Ladies' games at Hartsdown Park and away (Danny Boyle your support is very much appreciated) you would witness an attacking style of play that is enjoyable to watch.

Please adhere to the ground regulations with regards to the COVID virus they are there for your safety.

6 Membership of the Supporters Club for the 2020/21 is open to everyone at the existing prices of £7 for adults, £5 for concessions and the £1 special child membership so ask at our hut for details of this and anything else supporter based. Please look out for more details on the club website, our Facebook page and the notice board down by our hut at the turnstiles.

Remember to get behind the team with your support at games, taking part in the 50/50 Draw, joining the Supporters Club and generally spreading the word about Margate Football Club

THIS IS YOUR CLUB: HELP US HELP THEM FOR YOU.

Forty, Twenty, Ten—A look back in the MFC Archives

2nd November 1970 We opened this period with a local derby away to Ramsgate in the Kent Floodlight Cup watched by 657 at Southwood as we ran out 3 – 1 winners thanks to a Ron Harland brace and one from manager Gerry Baker. The following Saturday we entertained Dover in the Southern League Premier Division, but it was our visitors who returned home with the points following a 0 – 2 victory in front of 1700 spectators. Seven days later and we travelled to Underhill and lost 1 – 2 to Barnet despite John Wicken’s goal. Tonight and it was Poole Town who had to make the long Monday night journey to Hartsdown Park only to loss 4 – 2 as the Gate were cheered on by 1029 fans. Two goals from Jack Smith and one each from Hughie Cochrane and Dave Jarman saw us to the two points.

31st October 1995 We have reached that point in the season when you have a good idea how things will pan out based on the first ten games or so played and for us mid table seems to be the destination unless we suddenly hit a purple patch of victories to propel us into the title contenders or suffer a long list of injuries and defeats to push us down the table and into a relegation dogfight. Mixed fortunes of results this time around starting with a 2 – 1 home against Weymouth watched by 206 fans as Martin Buglione and Steve Lawrence hit our goals. Three days later and Buglione hit a brace in a 2 – 2 home draw against Fisher 93 (following the original team going bust this was the reformed team). We then travelled to Havant and a 0 – 2 defeat in front of only 131 fans, although later in the season Hampshire team were to be docked 6 points for irregularities. Tonight we faced league leaders in the second leg of the Southern League Cup 1st Round and Buggs scored the only goal of the game to give us a 4 – 1 aggregate win.

Played 12 Won 4 Drew 2 Lost 6 Goals For 15 Goals Against 18 Points 14

29th October 2005. Three league games and we have stopped the run of draws. However one win and two defeats was not necessarily the response we wanted. Having started the run with a narrow 1 – 0 home victory over Wealdstone (with no sign of their “Raider”) thanks to another goal from Adolph Amoako, we travelled to Dulwich Hamlets Champion Hill ground to face a strong Fisher Athletic side only to loss 1 – 2 with Ellis Remy netting for us. A couple of years later Ellis was the centre of a dispute between two non leagues clubs. The club holding his registration was not playing him but refusing to let him sign for another team without a fee. Not helpful for a 21 year old and his career although he was later called up by Montserrat and sadly a practice that still happens in football at different levels. Our final game, staged today, was against league leaders Braintree at their Cressing Road ground. We returned pointless following a 0-1 defeat. The combined total of the attendances at the two away matches against two of the top three teams was less than our home gate against another team struggling near the bottom.

7 Today's Opponents: EAST THURROCK UNITED FC The idea of forming a senior side to represent the growing area around the Thames-side towns of Corringham and Stanford-le-Hope grew out of the Corringham Social Club Sunday team, who were one of the leading Sunday sides around the south area in the mid 1960’s. Their Sunday morning matches at Corringham Recreation Ground were drawing a decent number of spectators, and it was felt there would be enough support in the area for a senior non-league side. A meeting took place in the Corringham Club on Sunday 27th April 1969, at which it was agreed to form an independent club to be called East Thurrock United. One of the first priorities of the fledgling club was to find a suitable site on which to establish a headquarters.

The man behind the formation of the new club was Brian Fayers, a Corringham man who was an established striker (centre forward in those days) around the local non-league scene at the time, and Brian became the clubs first ever manager.

In their inaugural season, 1969-70, the club played in the Southern Essex Combination, with home games still played on the local park pitch at FORM GUIDE Corringham Rec, and finished third in the table.

For the following season, the club gained use of the former Lathol LOST Athletic sports ground in Billet Lane, Stanford-le-Hope, an improved facility v Cheshunt with a spectator stand and a railed off pitch. The former works ground was rated as the best sports facility in the local area, and had just been taken 4—3 over by Thurrock Council. The Rocks joined the old Greater London League and won the Reserve Division Two title at the first attempt, and repeated the feat the following season by winning the Reserve Division LOST One title. v Worthing During the spring of 1972, the club was granted senior non-league 3—1 status by the FA, and were again promoted, into Senior Division Two of what had now become the Metropolitan-London League. They pulled off what must be a rare feat for any club, by making it a WON hat-trick of league titles. Stepping up a division each time. v Horsham Following their fourth successive promotion, the club were now 3—2 competing in the top division, alongside established senior clubs like , Cray Wanderers and Epping Town, and after a difficult season just escaped relegation. LOST The handful of committed people running the club suffered a big blow at the end of that 1974-75 season when the ground-sharing arrangement at v Bognor Regis Grays was ended. The club gained permission from the FA to continue 4—0 playing as a senior club at Billet Lane as a temporary measure, but the facilities there had been allowed to run down by Thurrock Council, and in 1977 the club again had to leave their home area, and entered into another ground-sharing agreement, this time with Tilbury Football Cub. KIT It’s fair to say the Rocks were made very welcome at Tilbury, and under the enthusiastic management team of Greg Lindsay and Danny O’Leary the club enjoyed a settled period on the playing front, while behind the scenes the committee continued their search for a permanent home.

During the reign of Lindsay and O’Leary the Rocks made the switch to the Essex Senior League in 1979, and during the early 1980’s, and thanks mainly to the efforts of then chairman Len Firman the club were able to purchase a site in Rookery Hill, Corringham.

A new manager joined the club in 1982, and Roger Bond went on to serve eleven years in charge of the club.

The Rocks played their first ever game on their own ground in August eastthurrockunited.co.uk

8 1984, and marked the historic occasion in style by registering a 6-0 Essex Senior League win over Coggeshall Town.

Under Roger Bond the Rocks progressed from the bottom of the Essex Senior League and into the Isthmian League, winning two league cups as well as making two other cup final appearances.

1992 saw Rocks promoted into the Isthmian League, but off the pitch the club were suffering growing financial problems. The early success of the Rookery Hill bar slowly waned however, and having taken out a considerable loan from brewers Greene King, the club were slowly falling behind with their loan repayments.

Roger Bond was replaced after the clubs first Isthmian season and after two or three short term managers in 1995 the club appointed former player Tommy Lee, who performed miracles in maintaining the clubs league status on a limited budget.

Tom left in the summer of 1999 and was replaced by another former player in Lee Patterson, who in his first season led the Rocks to the Isthmian division three title.

Despite success on the field, the club continued to be dogged by financial problems and Greene King, who had taken out a legal charge on the Rookery Hill site were starting to make threats about closing the club down. Then, in the spring

of 2002 the committee handed control of the club over to local businessman, and another former player in Ben Bennett, who as part of the takeover had made arrangements to clear the sizeable six figure sum outstanding to Greene King.

With this new financial stability, Lee Patterson saw the club to two more promotions, and by 2005 the club was playing Isthmian Premier football.

The success which “Patto” had brought to the Rocks attracted the attention of bigger clubs, and in 2007 he joined then Conference National side Braintree Town.

Following Patto’s departure, his assistant John Coventry took over as manager, and despite not being able to save the club from relegation in his first half season in charge, under “Covo” the Rocks enjoyed the most successful spell in their history.

During John Coventry’s twelve years as manager, the Rocks won the Isthmian North championship, made two Isthmian North play-offs, two Isthmian Premier play-offs (one of which was won in 2017, and led to promotion to the National South), two FA Cup first round proper appearances, two Essex Senior Cup finals (one of which was won, beating Chelmsford City 3-1 in the 2018-19 final), and one Isthmian Cup final appearance.

Many will say that John Coventry’s most impressive achievement at Rookery Hill was keeping the club competitive for three seasons at National South level, competing on level terms against some of the biggest and best supported non-league sides in the country, on one of the lowest budgets at step two, and on gates which seldom got above 250.

Sadly, a three-year spell at that level ended with relegation back to the Isthmian Premier at the end of the 2018-19 season, although we did have the consolation of winning the Essex FA Senior Cup for the first time ever.

(Cont. >) 9 Season 2019-20 was a truly tumultuous one for the club. Club owner Ben Bennett, who had saved the club back in 2002 sadly passed away in late 2019. Ben had backed Covo all the way, with tremendous drive and enthusiasm over the years, and it was obvious that things were never going to be quite the same without Ben. Financial problems followed with life becoming very difficult, and in February 2020 John Coventry announced that he would be standing down at the end of the campaign.

Having operated as a very tight knit club, it was no surprise that the bulk of the playing staff, and most of John’s administration team also indicated that they would be leaving at the same time.

The spring/summer of 2020 has seen a major re-structuring of the club. Thanks to the efforts of a handful of mostly former Rocks players, and people close to the club, we have managed to drag the club back from the brink.

One of the first jobs of the new management was to appoint a new manager, and the choice was Paul Martin, who had spent fifteen seasons loyally serving Romford FC before being unceremoniously jettisoned, along with the whole playing squad, on the arrival of new owner Glen Tamplin.

The club now also has a new owner in the shape of Thurrock based entrepreneur Alfie Best who has vowed to get the club relocated to a newly build community stadium within the local catchment area.

Alfie is the founder and chairman of Wyldecrest Parks, the UK largest residential park operator with over eighty parks located in key locations throughout the country. His other companies include Vaaroom Motorhome Hire, another leader in its field, and Barbados VIP Villas.

TEAM 2020/2021 Paul MARTIN (manager) - Paul took over the first team manager’s job at Rookery Hill in the spring of 2000, following the departure of long serving John Coventry. He had previously been a long serving manager himself, having spent thirteen years in charge of Romford FC, before a change of club ownership saw him unceremoniously sacked. A popular and highly respected figure around the non-league scene, Paul had worked his magic at Romford, running away with the Essex Senior League in his first full season, then performing wonders keeping his side in the Isthmian North despite operating on a minimal (and sometimes zero) playing budget.

Mark LORD (assistant manager) - Mark has worked alongside Paul Martin for the past fifteen years, originally at Romford reserves, and then moved to work alongside Paul when he took over the Romford first team. A former Rocks player “Lordy” actually scored the first ever Isthmian League goal for the club, in a one-all draw with Cove, back in August 1992.

Arthur JANATA (goalkeeper) - A Leyton Orient graduate, Arthur was with the O's right through their youth system from 8 years of age, and into their development sides. Arthur signed full time for the Orient in 2018, and spent time in and around the first team squad. However, despite being on the bench on a number of occasions, Arthur did not make a senior appearance for the O's. He was released in the summer of 2020, and teamed up with Paul Martin at the Rocks. The young keeper was well known by Paul having spent time on loan a Paul's former club Romford FC. Arthur also had loan spells at Bishop’s Stortford, Potters Bar Town and Waltham Abbey during his time at Brisbane Road. He continues to have ties with the Orient, as he works as a coach at their academy.

Michael AGBOOLA (defender) - Paul Martin was delighted when Big Mike agreed to join the Rocks during the summer of 2020, after impressing with some solid performances at Isthmian North Hullbridge Sports in the 2019-20 season. A commanding central defender, Mike first came to prominence while at Billericay Town as a youngster. He then spent five years successfully playing pro-soccer in the USA. On his return to the UK, Mike joined Paul Martin at Romford for a while, until the Glen Tamplin takeover, upon which he joined Hullbridge.

Louis BOWEN (defender) - Joined the Rocks during the summer from Waltham Abbey FC. A powerful central defender, Louis has spent most of his career at step four, and was with Hertford Town prior to joining the Abbey set-up. Paul Martin feels that Louis has all the right attributes to step up to Isthmian Premier level.

Jamie MARSH (defender) – Young defender, joined the Rocks in October after a brief spell at Basildon United. Had earlier been with Paul Martin at Romford.

Ricky BRENNAN (defender) - An experienced defender, Ricky joined us in the summer of 2020 having been with Southern League Chalfont St Peter for the 2019-20 season. Ricky's previous clubs include, Waltham Abbey and Chesham United. 10 Michael CASTLE (defender) - Composed young defender Michael has been honing his skills with Essex Senior League side Takeley FC. Impressed everyone while trialling with us during pre-season, and signed in August 2020.

Dan COSSINGTON (defender) - A regular member of Paul Martin's Romford side for five seasons, much of which he spent as skipper. A strong tacking defender/defensive midfielder, Dan departed from Romford in November when the Glen Tamplin whirlwind hit. Had previously been at Barkingside. Joined the Rocks around the turn of the year 2019-20, and took to Isthmian Premier football like a fish to water. Now working with Paul Martin as player-coach.

Callum TAYLOR (wing back) - Talented young left wing back who spent time with Grays Athletic and Royston Town before joining ambitious Southern Leaguers Welwyn Garden City last season. Callum was a key member of the City side, which was challenging for promotion when last season was curtailed.

George WOODWARD (wing back) - George is the latest player to team up with his former Romford boss Paul Martin at Rookery Hill, and another player who the Rocks new boss feels will be comfortable playing at Isthmian Premier level. A left sided defender who can also operate further forward, George first came to prominence with Romford. He then played at Hornchurch and Aveley, but returned to Romford in the spring of 2019, but left at the time of Glen Tamplin’s arrival. He then switched to Canvey Island where he was a regular in their defence for the remainder of the curtailed 2019-20 sea- son.

Jon NZENGO (midfield) - Another player in the Rocks squad who is well known to Paul Martin. Jon turned in a string of impressive displays under Paul at Romford, which attracted the attention of Rocks previous manager John Coventry. Covo signed Jon on dual-reg early in the 2018-19 season, and he quickly adapted to National South football, and was a regular in the Rocks side which although suffering relegation by a narrow margin, also picked up the prestigious Essex Senior Cup for the first time in our history. Jon decided to step down a level last season, and was a member of the Aveley side which reached the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. Returned to the Rocks fold for the start of the current season. Jon is comfortable in a number of positions.

Luke ILLSLEY (midfield) - Central Midfielder who joined this summer from Southern League Chalfont St Peter, where he was very much a fans favourite. Luke has previously been with Enfield Town, Cheshunt and Hertford Town.

Ayo OLUKOGA (midfield) - Ayo is one of only three players from the previous regime to start the 2020-21 season at the club. Ayo joined the Rocks during the summer of 2019-20 from Romford, who were of course managed by Paul Martin. He quickly established himself as a first team regular last term.

Jordan PEART (midfield) - Joined Barking FC from Aveley FC in 2018. A pacey midfielder who likes to break forward, Jordan quickly established himself in the Barking side, and was almost an ever present for two seasons prior to signing for the Rocks in the summer of 2020.

Olu QUADRI (midfield) - Another summer 2020 signing for Paul Martin. An experienced campaigner, who has spent most of his career playing at step 4. Was with Wembley FC last season. Previous clubs include, Maldon & Tiptree, Basildon United, Ware and Chesham United.

Phil BROWN-BAMPOE (midfield) - Joined the Rocks in October. A talented midfielder who had spent the previous two seasons playing at Romford. Past clubs include Greenwich Borough and Redbridge.

Kenny AILERU (attacking midfield) – Since joining the Rocks this summer, Kenny has made an immediate impression at Isthmian Premier level. Kenny worked his way into the Phoenix Sports Isthmian South side during the 2018-19 season turned in a string of impressive performances with the North Kent side. Very confident in possession of the ball, Kenny (Cont. >) 11 can play as an attacking midfielder or as a wide forward. Came through the Aldershot Town youth set-up.

Zenon STYLIANIDES (attacking midfield) - Came to the Rocks in the summer of 2020 with an excellent pedigree. London born Zenon came through the Tottenham Hotspur youth set-up, representing the Spurs from under 8 right up to under 23 level. After being released by Spurs, Zenon had a spell at QPR, before moving out to ply his trade in Cyprus with league side Omonia Aradippou. Following a two year spell on the sunshine island, Zenon returned to the UK to link up with the Rocks in August 2020.

Izzy BADEMOSI (forward) - Izzy joined the club during the summer of 2020, having previously been with Bedfont Sports, where he was their leading scorer in the 2019-20 season. Had been with Barking, and Chipstead FC earlier in his career.

Kieran CASE (forward) - Kieran is a home grown talent in more ways than one. A product of the Rocks youth set-up, he has close family ties at his home town club. His grandfather, Glen Case holds the club all time appearance record with 642 games, while his uncle, Lee Burns in another Rocks legend. Kieran impressed while with us pre-season, and signed Isthmian League forms in August 2020.

Alfie CUE (forward) - An exciting young forward, Alfie is a product of the Dartford FC academy, where he was very much admired by long serving Darts manager Tony Burnham. Alfie made his National South debut for the Darts shortly after his 18th birthday. While at the Darts, he spent loan time at Leatherhead and at Hitchin Town, who he joined on a permanent basis during last season, prior to making the switch to the Rocks during the summer.

Nebay HAILE (forward) – Skilful and dangerous young forward. Joined in mid October on dual registration from National South Dartford FC. Previously with Staines Town, Bracknell Town and Tooting & Mitcham.

14 Match Report FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round Aylesbury v Margate Score: 2-4 Attendance: 243

Margate progressed to the 1st Round Proper of the FA trophy after a 4-2 win away at Aylesbury and earned a home tie against Burgess Hill Town.

Our hosts started the match strongly and deservedly took the lead in the 10th minute as Hercules broke out from his own defence and crossed for Jones who scored with a shot from inside the box. 1-0 Aylesbury. Afrane-Kesey raced in behind the defence (17’) but just as he was about to apply the finish the linesman flag went up for offside. The Gate did not have to wait long for an equaliser, and it was a debut goal for Norman Wabo. The recent acquisition smashed the ball home after Swift and Leighton combined to pass him the ball from a Richards corner. 1-1.

Aylesbury responded brightly: Hercules (25’) ran into the Margate box but fired straight at Vose who made the save before Seaton hit a rocket of a shot (28’) that Vose tipped onto the bar. Wabo was having a lively debut and almost grabbed a second latching onto a Burnett trough ball (38’) before being thwarted by Hopwood. There was just time for Jones to let fly from 25 yards, but his shot went well over the bar and the half ended 1-1.

The second half started with a change for the Gate as Moncur replaced Burnett. The midfielder had barely had two touches when he set Wabo through on goal (47’) and the striker coolly slotted the ball under the keeper and into the goal. 2-1 Margate.

The teams traded set pieces: Leighton heading a Richards corner at goal (50’) but his header was cleared before an Aylesbury free kick (53’) is well held by Vose. Manager Saunders made his second change in the 65th minute replacing Jack Richards with Toby Bancroft and the winger almost got a goal, but he puts a shot to close to the keeper with the goal at his mercy!

That missed proved costly as the score was 2-2 in the 69th minute as Jones disposed Porter on the halfway line and charged towards goal sending an unstoppable effort into the top corner! 2-2 and just twenty minutes to play, but the Gate were not behind for long as from a Porter free kick Liam Friend showed great feet to feed the ball to Leighton and the attacker smashed the ball home for his first goal of the season. 1215 3-2 Margate. The forward didn’t have to wait long for his second goal of the season as he (Noel Leighton) picked the defenders pocket on the edge of the area and fired another effort (78’) into the back of the net! 4-2 Margate.

Our hosts were shocked after two quick goals are were unable to get back into the match, Ufuah replaced Wabo to the applause of the travelling fans in the 81st minute and after 3 added minutes an end to end encounter finished: Aylesbury 2 Margate 4.

TEAM: Bailey Vose, Chris Sessegnon, Jay Porter, Reece Prestedge, Liam Friend, Ben Swift ©, Richard Afrane-Kesey, Archie Burnett, Norman Wabo, Noel Leighton, Jack Richards.

Subs: Owen Kallmeier, Jamie Coyle, Freddie Moncur (Burnett 45’), Toby Bancroft (Richards 65’), Ufuah (Wabo 82’), Hatton.

Player SponsorshipPlayer Jay makes two new signings to bolster squad.

22-year-old Norman Wabo joins Hartsdown Park having enjoyed spells at Ebbsfleet United, Maidstone United and most recently Dartford FC.

Wabo has been a long-term target of manager Jay Saunders who was delighted to seal the striker’s signature.

“I’m really pleased to add Norman to our squad. He is a big signing for us. I rate him very highly, he’s also a player Coylie knows and speaks of highly having worked with him at Dartford.”

“He’s a player I’ve had my eye on for a while. Patience has paid off and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Saunders added, “Our squad is in need of goal scoring options and Norman has all the attributes to make a good impression and thrive here at Hartsdown Park.”

In addition, Saunders has also been able to secure the midfielder, Dominic Vose.

Vose brings plenty of pedigree to Hartsdown Park having begun his professional career with Fulham and then West Ham. Vose has previously played in the Football League for Barnet, Colchester United, Scunthorpe and Grimsby Town.

The 26-year-old enjoyed spells within the National League at Whitehawk and moved more locally to Bromley who secured his services after a trial spell. Vose then spent some time at Chester before two years at Dulwich Hamlet.

Having signed for League rivals Kingstonian in the summer, manager Jay Saunders was pleased to be able to tempt Vose down to Margate.

“I’m delighted to be able to get Dominic on board before tonight’s game. Dominic is another player I rate very highly and he will bring further quality into our squad.”

“I’ve said previously with our recruitment, we want to bring players who enhance and add to what we have got. We witnessed the impact Norman had on his debut on Sunday and I’m looking forward to seeing what Dominic can bring this evening.”

“He is another great signing for us and one for supporters to look forward to seeing in action.”

After the previous week's victory away at Maidstone the ladies were back at home the following Sunday hosting Aylesford Ladies 2nds at HDP (25th October 2020).

The match started in an all too familiar way as the Gate conceded inside the opening three minutes for the second time in two weeks, giving the visitors hope of upsetting the league leaders.

Going behind did not phase the blues as they quickly settled into their rhythm and started to create chances at the right end of the pitch. They eventually levelled the score mid-way through the half thanks to a Kara Richardson strike.

It was Richardson who put the gate in front with a close range header on forty minutes. Substitute Ashleigh Brookes extended the lead just before the break with a smart finish from a tight angle as Margate went in at half time leading 3-1.

The second half was dominated by the home team and went further ahead as Brookes volleyed home from the edge of the area giving the keeper no chance.

20 As the visitors tired the flow of the game was continuously interrupted as the ref blew up for a succession of fouls along with a couple of injuries, but there was still time for the blues to add to their tally as Brookes was tussled to the floor in the area and the ref rightly pointed to the spot. Skipper Becks Slevin stepped up and slotted into the bottom corner giving the ladies a 5-1 victory at full time.

A JOURNALIST is only as good as their contacts book, as they say – so we at The Non-League Paper reckon we’re onto a pretty good thing.

Printing a weekly paper throughout lockdown, without a ball being kicked, wasn’t easy. In fact, it was only made possible by the ‘fraternity’ – the chairmen and women, managers, players and supporters of football clubs across the land.

We’re pretty lucky at The NLP. We have a loyal following and an enviable understanding with the people we represent.

Yes, of course, we realise that having a relationship with the Press is in their interests, but it goes beyond that. A great number of players and managers can be counted as friends and we are very proud of that.

A conversation I had with a Step 3 manager the other day reminded me of a very special relationship I struck up with a manager as a young reporter, working on my local paper in Aldershot.

George Borg arrived at the Recreation Ground with a high profile and a no-nonsense nature. If he wanted, he could have spat out a young whippersnapper like me.

Instead, we became very close and, although he doesn’t know it, it was he who lit the flame for my love affair with the Non-League game.

On one occasion, I remember my back page lead story falling through, leaving me high and dry an hour before deadline.

In desperation, I gave George a call and explained my dilemma, asking him if he could confirm any transfer speculation to help fill the void.

What he gave me was a stronger exclusive than I had originally which became a popular talking point on the terraces.

As in most walks of life, a working relationship requires an ‘I’ll-scratch-your-back-if-you-scratch- mine’ thesis. George was a big advocate of this.

I remember waiting outside the dressing room door for the Shots boss among a posse of TV crews and national journalists following a FA Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion in November 2000.

Accepting I would probably only get a fraction of his time, I did contemplate easing his burden by slipping off and calling him later.

Just as I did though one of the players came to the door and asked specifically for myself and my counterpart from the Farnham Herald to come through and speak to George in the managers’ room at the back.

The face of the national guys was a picture as the two of us hustled our way through the crowd but when we got to the manager’s changing area, there he was sat on the bench with only a small hand towel to protect his modesty! It was probably the strangest interview I had ever carried out!

To this day, I always keep an eye out on how George’s Braintree Town side fare come 5pm on a Saturday. It’s a relationship which taught me so much and one I will always treasure.
