An Analysis of Ugly Betty ’s Influence on Females’ Understanding of Beauty Adria Goldman ABSTRACT The current study explores the influence nontraditional framing of beauty and ugliness has on college aged females’ interpretation of beauty. Focus group sessions were used to assess this influence, during which the women were asked several questions within two open discussions of beauty. The television sitcom Ugly Betty, which features an alternative framing of beauty standards, was shown between each discussion and used to analyze the media’s influence. The results show that the discussion and the new framing of beauty and ugliness in the clip influenced the women’s interpretations by either creating new understandings or re-enforcing existing beliefs. The women also considered media images of beauty to have a third-person effect with younger audiences being more impacted. Social comparison was used slightly in explaining beauty definitions and standards for women . First, it looks into the Cinderella paradigm as well as its complex in reality. Second, it finds the transcendence in modern Cinderella. The last part pursues the development of women status’ improvement. In current study, seldom people make comparisons between Cinderella and Ugly Betty. With its comparison and the exploration of feminism, it can be reached that woman status have been greatly improved under the influence of different factors like economic and political. And as a modern woman lives in the new century, she has to be independent in economy and optimistic in spirit. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

BETTY, VERONICA, AND THE RISE OF AMERICAN YOUTH CULTURE, 1941-1950 by Caroline Elizabeth Johnson This thesis uses the characters of Betty and Veronica of the Archie Comic series to explore the roles of adolescent females during the 1940s in the United States. The author utilizes feminist and art theory as well as relevant literature to argue that the writers of Archie Comics reflect and reify teenage experience through the characters of Betty and Veronica. Themes addressed include labor roles, dating habits, as well as teen involvement in consumer culture. By addressing the role of adolescent experience, the author hopes to expand conversations regarding women during the 1940s to include the impact of youth culture. The author concludes by suggesting Betty and Veronica represent a larger trend in American society regarding the way in which young women are conditioned to think and act in a particular manner via popular culture.     UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA DE VALENCIA ESCUELA POLITÉCNICA SUPERIOR DE GANDÍA Grado en Comunicación Audiovisual “Hora de aventuras como estandarte de la nueva animación televisiva en Cartoon Network” TRABAJO FINAL DE GRADO Autor/a: Francisco Javier López Gea Tutor/a: Fernando Luis Macías Pintado Gandía, 2020 Resumen: Este trabajo pretende mostrar las claves estilísticas y las propuestas temáticas presentes en la obra de la generación de animadores surgida en Cartoon Network a principios de la década de 2010, a raíz del lanzamiento de Hora de aventuras en ese mismo año. Para ello, analizaremos cómo esta serie ha supuesto una suerte de factoría de nuevos talentos y averiguaremos qué rasgos comunes podemos encontrar en estas nuevas sensibilidades que se han asentado en la animación tradicional para televisión. Con este objetivo nos valdremos, aparte de la serie de Pendleton Ward, de Steven Universe y Más allá del jardín para mostrar un ejemplo de dos animaciones creadas por miembros de la plantilla de Hora de aventuras. En INGLÉS: This work wants to show the stylistic keys and the thematic proposals present in the work of the generation of animators that emerged on Cartoon Network in the early 2010s, following the launch of Adventure Time that same year. In order to elaborate this work, we will analyze how this series has been a kind of factory for new talents, and we will also find out what common traits we can detect in these new sensibilities that have settled in television‟s traditional animation. In order to achieve this goal, we will use, aside from the Pendleton Ward series, other shows such as Steven Universe and Over the Garden Wall for the purpose of showing an example of two animations created by members of the Adventure Time‟s staff.
