Alaior es también reconocida por al- bergar la extensión universitaria de la Universitat de les Illes Balears, cuya sede se encuentra en el palacio de Can Sa- lort, una casa señorial del siglo XVIII. La villa fue fundada por la corona ara- gonesa en 1304, cuando el rey Jaume II de Mallorca rebautizó el lugar, llamado hasta entonces “Ihalor” por los musulmanes, y actuó ante la necesidad de co- lonizar las tierras conquistadas veinte años atrás y disponer de un núcleo in- termedio entre Maó y Ciutadella.
