Spring – Summer 2019 PARK FRIEND The Official Newsletter of Friends of ANNIVERSARY of A SUCCESS STORY elcome to Park Friend, the redesigned newsletter of Friends of Balboa Park! In this, our organization’s 20th anniversary year, we Wwanted to relate all the dynamic efforts that we do here in Balboa Park in a more extensive and visually appealing manner. You play a role in our story of success, and I hope you will enjoy this new publication. What better way to kick off our 20th anniversary celebration than to achieve Phase I of our Capital Campaign for the Balboa Park Carousel! Thanks to your support, the Campaign has raised over $1.6M, enabling Friends to complete the purchase of the Carousel from its prior owner, thus ensuring it remains part of Balboa Park in perpetuity. We sincerely thank the Campaign leaders Ann Wilson and Kathy Anderson Kim for helping us reach this milestone. See page 5 for more details, including how you can be part of the Campaign’s next phase.

With Gratitude: County Supervisor Ron Roberts In December 2018, Supervisor Ron Roberts completed his final term on San Diego County’s Board of Supervisors. Since first elected in 1994 – and before that, as a member of the San Diego City Council – Ron has been a staunch advocate of Balboa Park in general, and of Friends of Balboa Park, in particular. On behalf of a grateful community of park partners, we extend our deepest gratitude to Supervisor Roberts for the tremendous positive impact that he made on Balboa Park during his tenure as a public servant.

Landmark Signage Program Update A special thank you to San Diego County for sponsoring the newest addition to Friends’ Park Landmark Signage program. This historical interpretive sign features information on the Palisades and can be found at the intersection of Presidents Way and Pan American Road.

Information Kiosks Receive Upgrade Friends recently completely technological upgrades to three of the five outdoor information kiosks found throughout Balboa Park. Thanks to support from Las Patronas and San Diego County, new, large touchscreens and redesigned interactive park maps were installed, making visitor interaction with the kiosks easier. Friends of Balboa Park thanks our program partners, Kiosk Arts and Balboa Park Online Collaborative, for their efforts in making this upgrade a reality.

New “Native Birds of Balboa Park” Guide Balboa Park is home to many species of native and migratory wildlife. Recently, Friends of Balboa Park and Balboa Park Online Collaborative partnered to develop a new online guide to more than thirty wild birds that visitors may see regularly around the park, featuring colorful images and reference information. The guide was made possible by a grant from San Diego Gas & Electric. “Kudos to our nonprofit partners for creating an innovative digital tool to enhance the bird watching experience in Balboa Park,” said Estela de Llanos, chief environmental officer at SDG&E. The digital tour can be found on BalboaPark.org or the Balboa Park App, available to download for free from the Apple Store or Google Play. 7 PARK INSIDER’S LOOK: MAGEN SHAW A Conversation with the Balboa Park Horticulturist

New “Trees to Treasures” Program Launched ast fall, Friends of Balboa Park was named the official partner and program administrator of an exciting new program, “Trees to Treasures.” In partnership with Lthe City of San Diego’s Parks & Recreation Department and San Diego Urban Timber, “Trees to Treasures” will reutilize Balboa Park’s dead and dying trees once they become unviable. Instead of simply mulching trees that must be taken down, the program will process felled trunks into lumber and usable wood products. The City benefits by reducing costs and liability, supporting sustainable carbon sequestration and generating financial support for maintenance of existing and new trees in the park. And the public benefits by having eco-friendly products made from recovered wood from historic Balboa Park. This is one of the first programs of its type nationwide in a municipal park. As a celebration of the launch of “Trees to Treasures,” Karl Strauss Brewery and Taylor Guitars will co-host a benefit event on Friday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Karl Strauss Tasting Room in San Diego. All proceeds from the sale of a new Karl Strauss beer, ReGreen Brut IPA, will benefit the “Trees to Treasures” program. 8 To learn more about “Trees to Treasures,” visit friendsofbalboapark.org/trees-to-treasures CT Scapes Joins Adopt-A-Plot Program If you’ve had an opportunity to walk down the Prado in Balboa Park recently, you must have seen a completely new look on either side of the cascades water feature in front of the Natural History Museum. CT Scapes has installed a garden featuring dramatic low water plants. Accenting these plants, they have used an inorganic mulch of rocks and pebbles. CT Scapes is a company specializing in low water landscapes. To learn more about the Adopt-A-Plot program, visit friendsofbalboapark.org/adopt-a-plot/.

Victorian Lilies Coming Soon In collaboration with the Parks & Recreation Department, park visitors can expect to see stunning Victorian Lilies in the historic Lily Pond beginning in Spring 2019, the first time this lily varietal will be introduced into the pond. This park enhancement was made possible in part by Friends’ Sandra B. Phelps-Wilson Horticulture Fund. As many long-time supporters will recall, Friends was also responsible for the rehabilitation of the Lily Pond when it was vandalized in 2012, and we are happy to be part of yet another chapter of the pond. Friends of Balboa Park prides itself on being a common denominator with donors with meaningful park enhancements in mind, and facilitating conversations and fundraising plans to accomplish meaningful park changes. at Friends of Balboa Park
