Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills – Super Session 03.06.09 07:56 February 2009 Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills - Super Session Speakers Corner/Columbia Records CS 9701 Format: LP Originally Released: 1968 Reissue Released: 2008 by Joseph Taylor [email protected] Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment In 1968, Al Kooper had just left Blood Sweat & Tears, the horn band he had started, and was an A&R man at Columbia Records. Guitarist Mike Bloomfield, whom Kooper had played with on Highway 61 Revisited, was also between bands, so Kooper called him up and suggested they jam in the recording studio. Two other musicians, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Eddie Hoh, joined them for a marathon nine-hour session (pianist Barry Goldberg sat in on a couple of tracks). The next day, Bloomfield was a no show and Kooper, in a panic, cast about for another guitarist. He was lucky enough to track down Steven Stills, whose band, Buffalo Springfield, had just split up. After another long session, Kooper had enough material to create an album. Super Session, co-credited to Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills, cost $13,000 to record and became a gold record. Kooper had horn arrangements dubbed onto some of the tunes, but otherwise they were released as originally recorded, except for some editing on a version of Donovan’s "Season of the Witch." Bloomfield is the reason to own the record. His searing guitar work is astonishing, some of the best of his brief career. He plays with focused intensity and a powerful grasp of blues tradition.

    GUITAR MIKEY TIMELINE 1969 At the age of 5 receives a stack of 45 rpm records. By the age of 6 he finds himself recording himself singing along the records on his dad’s cassette recorder. Songs included “Kansas City” by Trini Lopez. 1976 First Television Appearances At Age 11 Mike McMillan AKA Guitar Mikey at age 11 starts The Young Canadian Blues Band. He makes several appearances with the 3 member band on a local cable show performing some 50's rock'n'roll classics as well as Johnny Winter's "Mean Town Blues". At age 11 Mike attends a Muddy Waters concert by himself. His father returns at the end of the show to pick him up. He is nowhere to be found. Eventually as Mike's dad continues to circle the auditorium he finds Mike exiting the stage door where he had been hanging out with the man himself, Muddy Waters. First Working Band Mike had just turned 12 when he joined his first working band "Phoenix". They would play local high school dances. He would continue performing as a guitar player playing in rock bands while all the time really wanting to play blues. 1980 Steel City Blues Band Mike realized that if he was going to play blues, he would have to front a band as the singer. So he began to sing blues imitating his childhood idol Johnny Winter. The familiar growling style would work for the time being. However Mike's singing would eventually grow into something all his own. He started The Steel City Blues Band.

    Reflections of the Class of 1972 The World and Franklin & Marshall, 1968-1972 By Larry May We entered F&M just as one era in American life was ending and a new one beginning. 1968-1972 was neither the best of times nor the worst of times, but it was a chaotically transformational time Most of all it was our time. We came to F&M having grown up watching Leave it to Beaver and thinking that married couples like Donna and Alex Stone (The Donna Reed Show) commonly slept in twin beds. Who knew that sex ended with marriage? We came to F&M as the last of the short-haired relics of the Eisenhower and e Kennedy years and many of us, we dare say, undoubtedly emerged more politicized and unquestionably less well-groomed. Our four years at F&M provided us with an imperfect sanctuary from the tumultuous goings on of the outside world. Consider all that happened during our college years: -- In the Summer of 1968 the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia putting an end to the Czechoslovakian Spring. -- The rioting in and the burning of our nation’s inner cities continued and served as a constant and distressing reminder of the anger and frustration born of poverty, racism and inequality. -- On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon and we watched Walter Cronkite cry on TV probably for the first time since the assassination of John F. Kennedy. --August 1969, Woodstock -- In November of 1969 we witnessed, and some of us even participated, in the watershed anti-Vietnam War march on Washington.

    The Essential Mike Bloomfield Pickup Phrases by Don Mock Welcome to this lesson series on the legendary Michael Bloomfield. No guitarist cast a larger shadow of influence on my playing career than Bloomfield. Mike was a gifted and creative Blues player who had a special magic when he played. He was the first player in the ‘60’s to incorporate melodies and sounds that were above and beyond the rock and Blues styles of the day. I can remember literally wearing out my “Butterfield” and “Super Session” albums try- ing to capture every note and nuance in his solos. Mike Bloomfield was clearly influenced by the great Bluesmen but he also listened to and was inspired by other forms of music including jazz. And it was those great little jazz touches, Mike brought to his improvised solos, that intrigued me and many others to study deeper into the world of jazz as well as Blues. And although I became known more as a Jazz and Fusion player later in my career, my musical soul still resides in the Blues and Mike Bloomfield. So, thanks for checking out this lesson and hope you gain a bit more insight into this great American guitarist whose life and career were far too short. This first installment of the Essential Mike Bloomfield demonstrates “pickup” or “setup” phrases Mike often used to begin or lead into his brilliant solos. Meanwhile, the ASUCI Senate had the night before taken over the negotiations on establising a new snack bar in the cafeteria area of the second floor, since Chancellor Daniel Aldrich's adminis- tration decided this summer to take out the snack bar and use the1st floor for student government expansion. Ex-student senator John Krall, who with Rollin Buchanan had called the "lunch-in," said that his purpose wasn't affected by the fact that there would someday be a snack bar on the second floor. "We thought,' he said, "that sudents needed to realize how im- portant it was to have a place to get together and meet - especially the freshmen, who just assume that this university is just a place where students wanderaroundonpaths, and you meet them, maybe, if youhappen to have a class withthem." "This area is ideal as a snack bar,' John went on. "The stu- dent government shouldn't accept a compromise.
