This article seeks to demonstrate that an interest in female beauty was always pres- ent in the revolutionary process. The author analyzes how revolutionaries sus- tained that interest by employing self-beautification practices and women's beauty politically and how social interactions reinforced the perception that female beauty was rewarding, underscoring that Communists accepted the practice of self-adornment. After examining the revolutionary aesthetics of femininity developed by women activists, the article briefly explores the legacy offemale beauty in the Communist regime. -

English Translations of Shen Congwen's Masterwork
English Translations of Shen Congwen’s Masterwork, Bian Cheng (Border Town) ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF SHEN CONGWEN’S MASTERWORK, BIAN CHENG (BORDER TOWN) Jeffrey C. KINKLEY St. John’s University, New York City 8000 Utopia Parkway, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA [email protected] This essay compares the four published English translations of Bian cheng (Border Town) of Shen Congwen’s novel, discussing personal, linguistic, social, political, historical, and cross- cultural factors that might have influenced the translations and their reception when they appeared, respectively, in 1936, 1947, 1962, and 2009. Key words: Shen Congwen, Bian cheng, Border Town, Frontier City, translation, dialect, West Hunan, reception, Cuicui, Pearl Buck, Nobel Prize Shen Congwen’s 沈從文short novel Bian cheng 邊城, composed in 1933 − 1934, first published serially in Chinese in 1934,1 and translated under titles including Border Town (my own translation, which I shall privilege in this essay), The Frontier City, Une bourgade a l’écart (Fr.: An outlying town), Le passeur de Chadong (Fr.: The ferryman of Chadong), and Die Grenzstadt (Ger.: The frontier city), has for more than seven decades been acclaimed as Shen Congwen’s masterwork. A closer comparison of Gao Xingjian’s Soul Mountain (Lingshan , 1982-1989) and Ōe Kenzabur ō’s The Silent Cry (Man’en gannen no futtob ōru, 1967 ) also reveals a shared distrust of modernity, and a more precise preference for the margins of local culture. This cultural critique of modernity can be documented in their essays. However, although their respective doubts about modernity and central culture translate into similar formulations of an individual ethics, Ōe does not share Gao’s vision of a detached writer of “cold literature,” but rather continues to explore the political implications of his ethical stance. -

The Significance of Ding Ling’s Literary Works in Early-Twentieth Century China Erica Pisani Ding Ling was a notable literary figure in both the May Fourth Movement and the Communist Party in China from the 1920s through to the 1940s. Her published works from early in her writing career aimed to resolve questions such as how a woman should act, feel, and behave at a time when the role of women in the family and in broader Chinese society was being debated.1 While her works initially contained very little, if any, political messages, and primarily explored female subjectivity among Chinese women,2 they later evolved into works that focused more on some of the political issues of the day. This evolution in her writing followed her publically stated belief as editor of the Communist front journal Great Dipper that there was a “need for literature and literary culture to respond to political crisis,” 3 as well as a growing politicization of literary culture throughout China.4 One such example of this was the publication in 1948 of one of her more famous works, The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River, which focused on the process of land reform the Communist Party had been implementing across China in the 1940s and its’ effect on the different classes of tenants.5 While Ding Ling’s writings focused on issues affecting women in China in the early to mid-twentieth century, the settings of her works and the topics explored changed depending on the context in which they were written. It has generally been argued that the discrepancy between the reality of gender equality and the policy goals of the CCP were due to prioritization of party agenda and the avoidance of alienating poor rural men who served the party’s base. Traditionally, it is argued that this is what estranged female CCP members. Therefore, women within the party, it is often assumed, were in direct opposition to this prioritization. However, while this is a factor, my research demonstrates that this relationship was much more nuanced than is often presented. In fact, many female members decided to remain within the party and supported its goals despite gender equality being consistently compromised. To ignore this reality and the decisions many women within the CCP made would silence their voices and paint an over-simplified picture of their experiences. -

It argues that the practice of collecting is an epistemological attempt or a “cultural technique,” as formulated by the German media theorist Bernhard Siegert, to grasp the world in its myriad materiality and historicity. Through experiments on novel ways to reconfigure objects and study them as media on which intangible experiences are recorded, collectors cling to the authenticity of past events, preserve memory through ownership, and forge an intimate relationship with these objects. -
The Symbolized Countryfolks in Shen Congwen's the Border Town

The Border Town portrays the people and customs of a corner of Shangri-la, and humanizes, if not romanticizes nature and the country folk who are living in. The Border Town is perfect not only in subject, but in style and form as well. The complex theme of the novel is depicted through the methods of symbolism and contrast. The current study focuses on how Shen made use of symbolism to portray the country folk. Although Shen used various kinds of symbolisms, natural, sexual, religious, celestial, and political, only the first two kinds will be dealt with in this paper. Symbols discussed in the paper include Cui Cui, Grandpa, the Border Town, river, water, ferry, bamboo, dreams, pagoda, animals, flowers, dreams, colors, etc. Keywords: symbol, country folk, nature, simplicity, vitality Shen Congwen (1902-1988) is one of China’s most renowned modern writers. “His best works portrays the conditions and social customs of the minority nationality region in the border of Hunan and Guizhou” (Tang, p. 362). The Border Town (1934) is such a work. It vividly describes the landscape of the remote border town and the customs of the local people. In his foreword to The Border Town, the author says: I will not stop here.
