This article seeks to demonstrate that an interest in female beauty was always pres- ent in the revolutionary process. The author analyzes how revolutionaries sus- tained that interest by employing self-beautification practices and women's beauty politically and how social interactions reinforced the perception that female beauty was rewarding, underscoring that Communists accepted the practice of self-adornment. After examining the revolutionary aesthetics of femininity developed by women activists, the article briefly explores the legacy offemale beauty in the Communist regime. -

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE FEMALE CHINESE COMMUNIST LEADERS AND THE QUESTION OF GENDER EQUALITY MARLANA BOSLEY SPRING 2017 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Chinese with honors in Chinese Reviewed and approved* by the following: Kate Merkel-Hess Assistant Professor of History and Asian Studies Thesis Supervisor Nicolai Volland Assistant Professor in Asian Studies and Comparative Literature Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College i ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the tensions between women's liberation and class warfare through the perspectives of several prominent female leaders in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and also to push further to attempt to provide insight into how these women themselves reconciled these tensions. It has generally been argued that the discrepancy between the reality of gender equality and the policy goals of the CCP were due to prioritization of party agenda and the avoidance of alienating poor rural men who served the party’s base. Traditionally, it is argued that this is what estranged female CCP members. Therefore, women within the party, it is often assumed, were in direct opposition to this prioritization. However, while this is a factor, my research demonstrates that this relationship was much more nuanced than is often presented. In fact, many female members decided to remain within the party and supported its goals despite gender equality being consistently compromised. To ignore this reality and the decisions many women within the CCP made would silence their voices and paint an over-simplified picture of their experiences. -

Female Romance in Ancient and Modern Chinese Society 房智慧 張湘寧 Female Romance in Ancient and Modern Chinese Society Chih-Hui Fang Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Asia University Xiang-Ning Zhang Ming Dao High School Abstract Everyone‟s already wearing a mask in any case; it‟s just that the mask‟s an invisible one, unless you‟re already out, but then out people wear the out mask. 1 Just as we designate homosexuals as a special group stigmatized through being in the “closet,” lesbians in Taiwan nowadays have been and are, in the same way, frequently oppressed by conventional society. People attempt to police homosexuality through the law, education, health, etc. For example, the law does not allow homosexual marriage, or to allow homosexuals to adopt children. In addition, the media‟s reports provide a false image of homosexuality. In this article, I will not only provide an overview of lesbian history in Taiwan, but will also address the issue of “identities” in different eras. The first section will focus primarily on the history of homosexuality in ancient Chinese culture, in particular male prostitution, male concubines, the vogue of “Xiang Gong” (相公) and so on which prove the lack of lesbianism in ancient Chinese history. I will also examine homosexual material in some literary texts. The second section will discuss queer discourses and the development of Taiwanese lesbianism from 1990s to 2000, which is the crucial era in Taiwanese lesbian movements. The Aesthetics of Information in Modern Chinese Literary Culture, 1919-1949 Anatoly Detwyler Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Anatoly Detwyler All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Aesthetics of Information in Modern Chinese Literary Culture, 1919-1949 Anatoly Detwyler This dissertation examines the literary and cultural history of information in modern China from 1919 to 1949. This era witnessed a communications revolution, marked by the rapid proliferation of new ways of transmitting and inscribing information, which joined other revolutions (sociopolitical, linguistic) in ushering in the modern subject. In the form of xiaoxi, xinxi, or tongji, “information” became an essential entity by which to understand and implement modern practices of the communications revolution cropping up throughout China—from statistical knowledge to political propaganda, from stock speculation to new virtual communities. This dissertation uses four case studies to revisit familiar writers such as Mao Dun (1896-1981), Ding Ling (1904-1986), and Shen Congwen (1902-1988), while also excavating a number of innovative figures such as the avant-garde psychologist, Zhang Yaoxiang (1893-1964), and the communications critic, Xie Liuyi (1898-1945), to show how the rise of an early information era interacted with and spurred the emergence of modern literary culture, as writers, critics, and artists collectively developed new modes of representating -

Like a larva, Sophia, who enters society in the early twentieth century, is weak and immobile. Coco, who lives at the end of the twentieth century, is like a butterfly leading an outlandish lifestyle. -
