10 Letter from our Vicar, the Rev. Dr. Ian Mills Dear Friends, Some years ago while in Berlin we experienced a memorable dinner in a restaurant called unsicht-Bar—the ‘blind’ bar.

It was, in many ways, just like any other restaurant. Three courses, napkins, cut- lery—except for one thing. The restaurant was in complete darkness. Not near darkness, but total darkness. Pitch black. You could not see your hand in front of your face. Whether your eyes were open or shut made no difference.

When we arrived in a dimly-lit reception area we surrendered our mobile phones, our watches or anything that might emit even the tiniest trace of light. We were then introduced to our waiter, who, like all the staff, was visually impaired. After receiving some instructions she asked us to put our hands on her shoulders and off we went down a long, zig-zag tunnel until we were in total darkness. We had no idea how big the dining room was, how many diners there were, or where the ex- its were. It was, to begin with, a claustrophobic and unsettling experience.

But eventually we settled down and food arrived. The waiting staff—who were all completely blind, remember—orientated themselves by clicking their fingers; in- credibly, this helped them navigate the room, avoiding tables, chairs and col- leagues.

Each dish was a complete mystery. This was not an experience for picky eaters. Even getting the fork from the plate to your mouth while avoiding your nose and eyes proved surprisingly difficult. But by the end we were managing quite well, adjusting to our environment which was in many ways totally familiar, but in other ways very new.

The point of this whole experience was to remind us that when we are deprived of one of our senses, the others become sharpened. While we could not see, our sense of smell, taste and hearing became much more acute. We heard things that we wouldn’t normally register; tastes and temperatures of familiar food suddenly became much more vibrant and interesting. It was an incredible and unforgettable experience.

I think that the life of faith is essentially a daily struggle to attune all our senses to God. As people of faith, our thoughts, our words and our actions should always reflect the love of our Creator, and point others towards him. Now, that might sound simple, but let’s be honest—it’s not an easy task. P.T.O.

11 There are so many things competing for our senses in 2021 that they can become overloaded; we become distracted. Amid the noise, the sights, the smells, the sensory overload, we become blind to the only real clue to the nature of God our creator: that is, Jesus Christ.

Or, at least, who Jesus really is can easily become blurred. We can fall into the trap of imagining and worshipping Jesus as some interesting historical figure, or as part of our culture. In other words, often without realising it our senses have become numbed to the reality of the living Christ, the resurrected and ascended Son of God, and all that his life means for our lives today.

To be a Christian means to live in such a way that shows others that our lives have been changed by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Amid the distractions which overload our senses, we have the Word of God to listen to, the sacrament of Holy Communion to taste, prayer as our means of talking to God, and the cross of Jesus to orientate us. Without these things, we are lost.

This was the experience of the disciples of Jesus in so much of the gospels as they struggled to understand who Jesus was. It was amid their confusion and disorientation that Jesus spoke those words of comfort and guidance: ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (St John 14:6).

Like the disciples, we are still struggling to see Jesus in a world where there are many ‘ways’— there are many paths tempting us. There are many things claiming to be truthful, but only one truth; there are many things that claim to give us life—but as Christians we know that only Jesus’ death brings life.

This month, challenge yourself to answer the question: ‘how is my life being changed by Christ’s life, his death and his resurrection?’. What difference is it making in my life today, and how might it change me tomorrow?

If we can honestly answer that we are being changed and shaped by what Christ achieved for us, then, like me in that dark restaurant, our senses are being attuned to Jesus. We are finding him; we are hearing him amid the clamour of the world. We, like the disciples, are listening with awe to who he is and what he has done. We are glimpsing, touching, tasting, hearing Jesus. Jesus the way, the truth, and the life. Yours in Christ,

As you can see I have incorporated a cleaning list into the current rota, as well as the normal reading list. The church needs cleaning before every service. At the moment the bats are very active so the vacuuming and sweeping takes about an hour, consequently for a morning service this needs doing the day before, and for our evensong service it can be done on the Sunday

Readers. If you are reading at a morning service please remember milk and biscuits, and it would be a good idea to check if there is a big bottle of water for the kettles. Jane usually fills this for us but she is not always around, so please check it yourself. I realise that some of these dates may not suit you, so please swap with somebody else if necessary. As you can see we have managed to go back to our service pattern of Holy Communion at 9.00am on the second Sunday and Evensong at 6.30 on the fourth Sunday of each month. Rosemary 15

WORK TO REPAIR ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH TOWER HAS BEGUN!

Having completed a comprehensive programme of surveys, preparation of specifications, inviting tenders, contractor selection and obtaining permission to proceed from The Diocese of Bath & Wells, the PCC is pleased to announce that work is now underway to strengthen and repoint the Church tower.

Works are expected to be completed by mid September and are being carried out by a very experienced team of stonemasons. Most of the exterior work entails abseiling. For safety reasons, general access to the Church will be prevented while work continues but the Church will remain open for services as usual.

A BIG “THANK YOU” FROM ST. ANDREW’S PCC TO ALL THOSE WHO DONATED TO THE TOWER REPAIR FUND: WE COULD NOT HAVE PROCEEDED WITHOUT YOUR GENEROSITY.

SCHOOL NEWS

Learning on a Global Scale – Gorillas in the post! It is not an everyday occurrence that you receive a gorilla in the post from Uganda! But that is what happened at Chew Stoke Church School this week, when the children of Owl Class re- ceived a very exciting parcel from their partner school in Uganda. Chew Stoke has been part- nered with Christian Life Pre & Primary School, since September 2020 and despite the difficul- ties of the last academic year, has managed to communicate with the school on a regular weekly basis, exchanging letters, videos, e-mails, cards and presents. In this exciting parcel, the children received some beautiful hand-made hats and hand-carved gorillas as well as some beautiful hand-made personalised mats for the headteacher, Mr Ben Hewett and RE subject lead, Mrs Carole Hope. Having established their partnership link with Uganda through the British Council, all children across the school have been learning about Global Issues, including a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education, Habitat Destruction and Climate Change. In particular the children have really enjoyed learning about the endangered gorillas of the Mgahinga National Park, which is home to 40% of the world’s gorilla population and which is very close to their partner school in Uganda. Hence the reason why the children received small wooden gorillas in the post! (Please see photo) RE Subject Lead, Carole Hope, who has just completed Global Teacher’s Award commented: “The children really enjoy having a partner school in Uganda and have learnt a great deal about life both in Africa and around the world from our Connecting Classrooms work with the British Council. It is so important that we extend their learning outside of the Chew Valley and regularly discuss global issues with all ages, to prepare them for life in the 21st century.”
