11 CHURCH NEWS LETTER FROM THE REV. SANDRA LOVERN

“So what do we need a priest for?” ‘Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son’ (St Paul to the Elders of the Ephesian Church)

Dear Friends This cheerful comment was overheard after a very successful service led by members of the congregation at one of our churches. Am I offended? No! it’s a brilliant question we should all have in mind as we seek God’s guidance in choosing a new full-time priest here. I can’t hope to give you an answer in one short article, but from the very beginning the apostles, with prayer and fasting, chose those who were mature in their faith and wise in the Word of God (the Bible!) to lead the fledgling churches, and laid hands on them. This we call ordination. God’s Holy Spirit is the gift promised to every man or woman who accepts Jesus Christ into their lives, but in this case the apostles were asking God’s Spirit of blessing for a particular task – to guide and lead the leaders, as they oversaw, with love and tenderness, the spiritual health of the churches they led and the journey of faith of every Christian under their care (in good old archaic language the church calls this the ‘cure of souls,’ and you will hear the Bishop give, or delegate, this responsibility to a priest when he when he installs them in a parish). Being called to priesthood is hard to explain. We wrestle with it long and hard during calling by God, excruciating and prolonged examination by the church as they seek to establish whether the call is real, and then training and actual priesthood. None of us ever stop questioning what God is asking of us, which is why we dedicate time to pray every day, to retreat and be with God, and continue to study and reflect. We would be shamefully unfit to lead you if we did not. And so, perhaps the simple (simplified) answer to that cheerful question is first, because God says so, and second, because we all need someone deeply in touch with the Holy Spirit who is hopefully well-read, wise and mature (not in years, but in God!) and has a servant-heart that desires to serve those they are called to care for. It is a fact that the gifts of ordinary church members come to the fore in a vacancy, so please, don’t ever stop doing all the wonderful, creative things that are happening now just because a new ‘dog-collar’ is appointed! We are stronger when we work together. Yours in Christ, Sandra Lovern. 12 LENTWISE By Paula Gooder

SCHOOL NEWS

Chew Stoke Church School and the community working together The Worship, Ethos and Equality Team from Chew Stoke Church School have been busy learning more about the church. A further opportunity to join the Parish Electoral Roll Last year we prepared a completely new electoral roll for St Andrew’s Church and welcomed a number of new members. The roll has to be updated every year in March; please let us know if you would like to join this year. Joining the roll is a practical symbol of commitment to our Church; there is no time or financial commitment involved. We will contact you occasionally with information about services, in particular details of funerals in the church. And this year we shall be making important and difficult decisions about the reordering of the church to make it more useful for community as well as religious uses.

Further details & an application form can be found on a sheet inserted into this copy of the magazine, or obtained from St Andrew’s Church or from the Electoral Roll Officer, Sara Hindle on 331795 or the churchwarden, Alison Hoddell, on 332421. Forms must be returned by the beginning of April.

If you would like to be ‘In Association’ with us but do not meet the criteria on the form, please email Sara or Alison.
