Shabat ShaJom. Here is a report on the Eban tapes.

We received from Wylie Agency a typewritten document containing Walter Cronkite's introduction for eight speeches.

Of those eight speeches, we received audio tapes of four. The original tapes are black and we are sending you extra copies which are on white tapes.

Also included is a list that we made in our office. Our list matches the Cronkite list and the tapes that we did not receive are noted in bold.

At the end of our list, we included a tape which was received by us but was not on the Cronkite list.

By matching the Cronkite list and our list, you can see the discrepancies

We think the dates on Cronkite's List for items #2 and #4 seem incorrect, and we have corrected them.

Aubrey's voice is strong, his articulation clear, emphasis is vigorous and line of argumentation brilliant. These are historic pieces to be cherished. His voice is historic, as are the matters he is discussing.

Regarding the monetary appraisal, [have no suggestion. It would seem to me that several thousand dollars for each one would be a minimaJ figure. A set of six tapes could be counted as a $25,000 item. But that is just my opinion and I have no idea how to make an officiaJ appraisal

Love to you both, The Wc:xner Herirage Foundation

Israel's former Foreign Minister. Abba Eban. has long been recognized as one of the most articulate and inspiring statesmen on the world stage. All who are familiar with his work and style will listen with interest to the taped record of his most significant speeches from 1948 to lS~. r

Here. in the masterly chronicle by the man who has been his country' s voice at the tribunals of world opinion since the establishment of the State of over three decades ago, is an ·unequa 1ed picture of the young country in the decades of its modern national freedom.

The chronicle opens with a glance several decades back to the unforgettable first day of Israel's independence when Arab armies sought to crush its i ndependence and to prevent its appearance on the world scene . Abba Eban surveys all that has occurred since then. and finds that despite many dark clouds. the brave ambitions of that summer morning have not played us false. Nov- 1 9-99 06 : 11P w i l ey col l e g e 2 1 2 8 50 61 1 8 P . 03

He first achieved international prominence in May 1948 with a powerful address presenting the case for Jewish statehood before the Political and Security Committee of the U.N. With the admission of Israel to the U.N. a year later. he was appointed Permanent Representative of the Israel Delegation .

In September 1950. Mr . Eban presented his credentials as Ambassador to the United States. Then 35 years of age. he was ... the youngest official to hold a position of such rank in Washington . Those who witnessed Israel's crises and achievements of statesmanship in those fateful years will readily recall how Mr. Eban carri ed out both functions with rare distinction. In 1966. Mr. Eban became the Foreign Minister of Israel. with what courage and honor all the world now knows.

Born in in 1915 . Mr. Eban was brought up in

England. A~er graduating with honors from Cambr idge. where he specialized in Oriental languages . he was appointed to the

Faculty of Pembrok~~e. Cambridge University, as an authority on Hebrew. Arabic and Persian Literature. Nov- 1 9 - 99 06:11P w ; l e y c o lleg e 21 2 850 6 1 18 P . 04

In 1940 he went to Jerusalem with the Allied Forces as Liaison Officer of Allied Headquarters. His role: To secure participation of Jewish volunteers in special missions in the Near East and Europe. Later . he became Chief Instructor at the Middle East Arab Center conducted by the British Army in Jerusalem. Mr . Eban remained in Jerusalem after the War to enter the service of the Jewish Agency, remaining with it until the establishment of Israel.

The cultivated oratory, the logic. force and with of former Foreign Minister' Eban are well known in this country. Well known. too. are his scholarship in Middle Eastern affairs and his intense practical ideal i sm .

"Those who bui ld a bri dge between di fferent cultures. " Mr. Eban once declared. "who deduce from history the material of social harmony . . . who find the common and the different factor in disparate civilizations - these by their scholarshi p and zeal can illuminate the paths of peace. " This statement of his might well apply to the Foreign Minister himself. Nov - 19- 99 06:12P wiley college 212 850 6118 P.05

The listener is then taken back to a year by year examination of Israel's fortunes at moments of historic decision . With Arab armies swarming over Israel. we find its eloquent envoy at the United Nations rejecting an Arab ultimatum calling for the abrogation of Israel's sovreignty.

"Whether they want peace or war" he said. "they can have it only with the Sovereign State of Israel."

Because it presents Abba Eban·s major addresses made throughout Israel's years of triumphs and struggles. this audio-chronicle conveys a sense of participation in events of historic moment. All who follow the controversial history of this new nation will find Israel's positions authentically expressed

Abba Eban. former Foreign Minister of Israel. is regarded as one of the world's most eloquent and forceful diplomats. . Nov - 19- 99 06:12P wil e y college 212 850 6118 P.06

Rabbi Friedman,

Suzy Eban asked me to fax you this material. It contains a brief introduction to the speeches and Walter Cronkite's introductory remarks made each speech. (The date each speech was given is indicated on the sheets containing Mr. Cronkite's remarks.)

I will call you next week to see if you have any questions. This material is very important to Suzy and Ambassador Eban. They consider it a critical component of Mr. Eban's legacy. Thus, if there is some way you can help them release it on audiotapes, it would please them greatly.
