Sociopathetic Abscess Or Yawning Chasm? the Absent Postcolonial Transition In
Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. Key Words Doctor Who, cosmopolitanism, colonialism, postcolonialism, race, teleology, science fiction This is the submitted version of a paper that has been published with minor changes in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, 45(2): 207-225. 1 1. I gave this book 3 stars out of 5, balancing good Daak and bad Hulk. Paul Cornell is a British writer of science fiction and fantasy prose, comics and television. In the 26 th century the Earth Empire is in a death struggle with voracious Dalek forces yet still riven Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks home-grown threats. Doctor Who fans in the s and s were a pretty devoted lot. It's a magnificent illustration of why I despise multi-part storytelling with a passion. Davros has activated the long-dormant Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks army hidden there, converting them to the white and gold colour scheme applied to the Daleks he created on the planet Necros in Revelation of the Daleks. He plays second fiddle during most of the Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks. Goodreads is the world's largest site for readers with over 50 million reviews. Emperor of the Daleks Assimilation 2. So three and half stars. Are you happy to accept all Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks But I wish they'd put them in a more accurate chronological order. Other books in this series. Doctor Who Magazine — The longer pieces were better, especially 'Train Flight' and 'Nemesis'. It was interesting to see some elements similar to later TV plots - for instance the idea of a planetary library this time infested with bugs rather than the more scary Vashta Neradaa graveyard of the Tardises and a Time Lord killer - and in 'Who's That Girl' there appears to be a female Doctor. -

THE AUGUSTANA HERITAGE NEWSLETTER V O L U M E 4 S P R I N G 2 0 0 5 N U M B E R 2 A Letter from Paul Cornell President of the Augustana Heritage Association On Pearl Harbor Day, 2004 Many of our membership remember where we were and what we were doing on that day. Me? Playing ice hockey on Lake Nakomis in Minneapolis, Minnesota on a Sunday afternoon. I can better remember this year’s Gathering IV of the Augustana Heritage Association at Gustavus Adolphus. From the Jussi Bjoerling lecture Thursday through the luncheon on Sunday afternoon. It filled us with joy and thanksgiv- ing. Paul Cornell I realize more and more, and am thankful for, the legacy of Augustana that continues to guide and inspire me in the 7th decade of my life. The renewing of friendships, the words and music of “Songs from Two Homelands,” the presentations of pro- gram teachers, and the ambience (including the weather) of GA made for a great four days. Also to the GA committee for their pre- planning, their on-site operations, and all the behind-the-scenes – a very huge “tack så mycket”. I ask for your prayers and support as the second president of the AHA, stepping into the shoes of Reuben Swanson, is a momen- tous task. We are grateful for his four years of leadership. I am so pleased that he is continuing as a member of the AHA Board. Thank you, Reuben! The Doctor's Personality
APPENDIX 1: THE DOCTOR’S PERSONALITY Note This preprint is being made available because the first printing of the book this appendix appeared in contained an error in the figures that made them uninterpretable. The following can be interpreted without referring to the book, but for full context it could help to read Chapter 1 in: Rodebaugh, T. L. (2019). The Black Archive #27: The Face of Evil. Obverse Books: Edinburgh, UK. Typical APA-style references are not given, but the original text plus an online search should suffice for the interested reader. Finally, if the reader does not have a passing acquaintance with the television show Doctor Who, none of this will make any sense at all. A Demonstration of the Big Five Personality Traits In Chapter 1 I proposed that we can use the Five Factor Model of personality to understand the Doctor’s personality and analyse to what extent the Doctor is more accurately described as the same person played by different actors, as opposed to a set of entirely different people with different personalities. I therefore collected some data to test the ‘same person’ hypothesis versus the ‘different people’ hypothesis. I should be clear that I did not approach this question entirely as I would if I were conducting scientific research, although I did use some scientific methods. Of the many things I would do differently if I were conducting scientific research, two are worth a special mention. First, I would have pre-registered my hypotheses in some format (most likely on the online Open Science Framework) prior to collecting data or testing my hypotheses. -

Rose Sampler
The Black Archive #1 ROSE SAMPLER By Jon Arnold The other element which feeds into the season’s arc story is the reality television genre which became popular in the early 21st century. Davies is a vociferous advocate for reality TV – he has defended it as storytelling and even described an incident from the first series of Big Brother (2000-) as ‘the best bit of drama transmitted’ in the previous five or six years1. His fondness for the genre, 1 O’Brien, Steve and Nick Setchfield, ‘Russell Spouts’, SFX Collection Doctor Who Past! Present! Future!, Future Publishing, 2005, p39. The incident involved contestant Nick Bateman attempting to manipulate eviction nominations from fellow housemates, against the series rules, and being confronted about it by other housemates led by Craig Phillips. The incident is available to view on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri01fflx. along with his affection for makeover shows and game shows, is most overtly evident in the macabre parodies of them presented in Bad Wolf. However, the structure of Rose’s arc is drawn from the talent show subgenre, particularly series such as The X Factor (2004-). These shows begin with audition weeks, where the general public turn up to a series of events across the country to get on the show. The hopeful contestants who pass the auditions then sing each week, with the public’s two least favourite performances being forced to sing against each other and the contestant judged the worst being voted off the show. The format lends itself to repeated moments of high drama with the moment of voting-off, previously favoured contestants dropping into the bottom two and judges who express negative critical opinions becoming pantomime villains.
