Toronto Jazz April/May 2014 Publisher’s View Here we go again, except for my exceptional regular advertisers, seen in this issue, nothing new. Once again nobody in this big city of ours has anything worthwhile advertising, truly remarkable. Fortunately the beautiful Living Arts Theatre in Mississauga does have something, please see their notice. It would be real nice to be able to thank all sorts of sponsors and advertisers for their support, no such luck. For the past 19 years I have financed this publication out of my own pocket. So at least it was extremely gratifying to receive recognition for my dedication from Mayor Rob Ford. How often am I asked “don't you get frustrated in dealing with such mercenary individuals when soliciting for adverts?”. My answer to that is “ after you have been in sales for many years, you become immune to having the door shut in your face”. To add insult to injury, and what continues to aggravate me, is people lookng for free plugs, if you don't want to advertise it, please don't send it. We are a non-profit th th publication, our rates are cost, do take advantage of them. “Support those who 19 19 support you” is my motto, not, “support us and screw you”. Another thing which really “gets up my nose”, we regularly do nice features /collages on groups and individuals, and rarely get so much as a thank you. Good manners cost nothing , I A A guess they are a thing of the past like the great jazz scene in this city used to be. Although the Saturday afternoon “free” jazz session at the Pilot in Yorkville takes a lot of beating. N N I'm at the age now that when I was first on the jazz scene, most of the so-called jazz aficionados and disc jockeys weren’t even born. Bearing in N N mind I was hanging out in jazz clubs back in the early 50s. My respect has always been for the I I wonderfully talented jazz musicians. They have spent their lives devoted to this unique music . V V Outside of them , I would really have to think about who else in the jazz world I respect. However one does come to mind, and that's, Al E E Peabody, he's been around a long time. Definitely one of the most knowledgeable jazz R R personalities I know. Happy Bebop, Best of Health. So I guess I'm very happy, as I dig both these styles of playing, and Ted is excellent in either categorie. No wonder he is described as a “versatile player”, and not suprising is very much in demand. He has performed with numerous jazz legends, including, Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris, Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Maria Schnieder, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dave Leibman, Vince Mendosa, Steve Gadd and the list goes on. His debut CD., AS IF, which features a program of his original compositions, received a nomination for the 1998 Juno Award in contemporary jazz. His other credits iclude his performance with the late great, B3 organist, pianist, composer and arranger , Doug Riley, this recording was entitled CON ALAMA. Then there was choice saxophonist/pianist, Phil Dwyer's CD. ROAD STORIES. Finally a complitation CD. on Radioland Records , A TRIBUTE TO WES MONTGOMERY, which features six top Canadian guitarist, of course including our featured musician. Because of Ted's versatility and his competence in handling various styles of playing, he is very much saught after for studio, jingles, and soundtracks for movies. One in particular, David Cronenberg's, CRASH . In 1998 he received the Jazz Report Award for Guitarist of the Year. In the teaching field he is Head of the Guitar Department at Humber College of Music. Catch, Ted Quinlan when you can , you are in for a treat. From her early days on the club and coffee bar scene she has now become a major attraction. Her ability to sing in both English and French has attracted audiences across Canada. Jill's latest and fifth recording CHANSONS is totally in French. This CD. was nominated for Best Francophone and Jazz Recording at the 2013 Western Canadian Music Awards. Although she was born and raised in Port Credit, Jill has also lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Vancouver B.C., not to forget the time spent in the south of France studying French. At the moment she is touring Quebec and Ontario with international dates being planned. On April 24th this month, she will be performing at the beautiful Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. This theatre has splendid acoustics, I remember Grammy Award winner, Dame Cleo Laine saying how impressed she was with them. What a wonderful location for, Jill Barber to perform in, don't miss her. Not because he was a choice musician but also one of the most amiable individuals you could wish to meet. Gary was a mild mannered soft spoken person who was liked by everyone. For at least four decades he graced the Toronto jazz scene plying with some of the best including, Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Peter Appleyard, and, Ed Bickert to name a few. Gary had studied composition in Toronto with the late, Gordon Delamont, and in New York with legendary guitarist, Jim Hall. He had performed at The Ontario Science Centre, both the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, plus quite a few TV appearances. The original CJQ Canadian Jazz Quartet was formed in 1987 with Gary Benson, guitar, Gerry Hoelke, bass, Don Vickery, drums, and, Gordie Fleming , accordian. Then due to illness Gordie Fleming retired and Gerrie Hoeke relocated to Ottawa. This is when two more veterans joined the group, vibraphonist, Frank Wright and bassist, Bob Price. Unfortunatley in 2003, Bob Price passed on, this is when bassist, Duncan Hopkins took over, to this day he still part of the quartet. The CJQ , I'm old enough to remember the MJQ, Modern Jazz Quartet which in 1951 was originally called the Milt Jackson Quartet , John Lewis, piano, Milt Jackson (Bags) vibraphone, bassist, Ray Brown, and drummer, Kenny Clarke. In 1952 bassist, Percy Heath replaced, Ray Brown this is when the Modern Jazz Quartet got their name. Just reminiscing, first saw the MJQ back in London, England in the late 50s. Ok , now back to the Canadian Jazz Quartet which have quite a few tasty recordings out there, nice straight ahead jazz, my kinda stuff. So if you haven't heard this quartet, featuring the exceptional playing of guitarist, Gary Benson, go get one of their CDs. In 2002 luthier, Douglas Harrison collabrated with Gary Benson and produced The Douglas Harrison GB Guitar. The quality of sound this instrument produced received high praise from Gary and other leading jazz guitarist. Mayor Rob Ford congratulates publisher, Dave Milbourne. In recognition of his 19th Anniversary of Toronto Jazz publication. Photos by Barry Thomson I would like to express my gratitude to Mayor Rob Ford and his staff on the courteous way myself and photographer, Barry Thomson were treated.
