Towards a new confluence of anthropology and world history1 Chris Hann Abstract When socio-cultural anthropology was consolidated in the latter half of the nineteenth century, most practitioners adhered to evolutionist theory in unilineal forms. In the twentieth century, disciplinary specialization and an emphasis on fieldwork led many in the dominant schools to limit themselves to synchronic investigations of localised “cultures” or “societies”, with little or no historical depth. This paradigm shift was qualified for some decades by the vitality of diffusionist theory in the German-speaking countries, but eventually these too fell into disrepute. By the end of the twentieth century, socio-cultural anthropologists wishing to engage with the larger contours of human history outside evolutionist theory had to work out new approaches. This paper begins by reviewing the efforts of Ernest Gellner, Eric Wolf, David Graeber, and Jack Goody to re-engage with "big history". Goody‟s approach is the most promising foundation, but it pays insufficient attention to economic anthropology and to religion. It is argued that a “great dialectic” between market and redistribution can be traced back to the agro-literate Eurasian civilizations of the Bronze Age and the new belief systems of the Axial Age. -

Evans-Pritchard regarded social anthropology as being closer to certain kinds of history than to the natural sciences,l and thus distanced himself from the anti-historicism of the funct ionalists. Indeed, the lecture in which this then iconoclastic view was expressed also recorded the increasing acceptability of to post-functionalist British anthropologists in particu lar, though it certainly did not precipitate it, for as Evans Pritchard himself made clear, the trend was already under way. But there was still a long way to go before there would be a true meeting of minds from the two disciplines; despite sharing the overall aim of evaluating the nature of human society, their dif methods and the particular themes on which they focused their attention still served to keep them apart. These two recent books are, on the face of it, admirably suited to assess how far that situation has improved in the quarter of a century since Evans-Pritchard delivered his lecture. Both deal with themes in the history of European kinship, and in that sense they unite the two areas that have traditionally been at the heart of these respective disciplines. -

Diffuse Power as a Commodity: A Case Study from Gisaka (Eastern Rwanda)1 PIERRE BETTEZ GRAVEL Northern Illinois University, U.S.A. TO obtain the best possible results from an analysis of power in a primitive society, it is best to define power broadly. The idea of diffuse power is not a new one. It has had intermittent currency fromJohn Locke to Bertrand Russell. But the philosophers have not necessarily circumscribed the concept in the way that I wish to convey. Moreover, since the definition is a simple one, it is surely better to define the concept than to review the literature. First, we should exclude the sense given it by Meyer Fortes and Evans-Pritchard in the introduction of their book, African Political Systems ( 1940, xxiii), 2 in which they see power as the ability of individuals to control and regulate the use of physical force. This, incidentally, is the sense most often used in reference to primitive data, and is the meaning given to the word by H. Codere in her article on "Power in Rwanda."3 We should also exclude the definitions of the political scientists having to do with decision making. Power as used here will mean the ability to do, i.e. the faculty possessed by things, events, institutions, and men, of having the potential to move and alter. Although I want to use the definition of power as a modal proposition, nevertheless, in order to have the meaning of power grasped more firmly, it is best to think of it as a substance rather than as an activity. -

History, Anthropology and the Study of Communities: Some Problems in Macfarlane's Proposal

Calhoun History, anthropology and the study of communities: some problems in Macfarlanes proposal' In a recent paper, Alan Macfarlane advertises a new approach to the study of communities in which 'a combination of the anthropological techniques and the historical material could be extremely fruitful'.2 Unfortunately, he fails to make clear just what the approach he advocates is, and with what problems and phenomena it is intended to deal. He thus exacerbates rather than solves the methodological and conceptual problems which face social historians who would study community. The present paper is primarily polemical in intention. It is in agreement that community can be the object of coherent and productive study by historians and social scientists, working together and/or drawing on the products of each other's labours. It argues, however, that Macfarlane's conceptual apparatus is seriously problematic, and does not constitute a coherent approach. I have outlined elsewhere what I consider to be such a coherent approach.3 It makes community a comparative and historical variable. Macfarlane dismisses the concept as meaningless at the beginning of his paper, but then finds it necessary to reintroduce it in quotation marks in the latter part - without ever defining it. He introduces several potentially useful anthropological concepts, but vitiates their value by both a misleading treatment and the implication that they are replacements for, rather than supplements to, the concept of community. In the following I attempt to give a more accurate background to and interpretation of these concepts, and to correct several logical and methodological errors in Macfarlane's presentation. -

And the Cold War was leading to growing USSR influence in Africa. “It was sometimes said in the 1940s that the few African experts in the United States could hold a convention in a telephone booth.”2 Through funding from the Carnegie and Ford foundations and later from Fulbright awards and other government agencies, in 1948, Northwestern University became the first major African Studies Program, in the United States with support from the Carnegie Foundation. Bronislaw Kasper Malinowski Gunter Senft Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen 1. Biographical sketch "...he had an artists power to create with great integrative capacity a world of his own ... and he had the true scientist's intuitive discrimination between relevant and adventitious fundamental and secondary issues", this kind epitaph, which Malinowski formulated in his obituary for Sir James George Frazer a year before he himself died, could equally apply to Malinowski, as Raymond Firth (1981: 137) so rightly empha sized in one of his articles on his teacher and colleague. Bronislaw Malinowski, one of the most important anthropologists of the 20th century, is generally recognized as one of the founders of social anthropology, transforming 19th century speculative anthro pology into a field-oriented science that is based on empirical research. Malinowski is principally associated with his field research of the Mailu and especially of the Tro- briand Islanders in what is now Papua New Guinea, and his masterpieces on Trobri- and ethnography continue "to enthrall each generation of anthropologists through its intensity, rich detail, and penetrating revelations" (Weiner 1987: xiv). Bronislaw Kasper Malinowski (nicknamed Bronek & Bronio) was born in Cracow (then Austrian Galicia, now Poland) on 7 April 1884 as the only child of Jozefa (nee Lacka) and Lucjan Malinowski. His father (1839-1898) was professor of Slavonic philology at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow and was well known not only as a philologist but also as an ethnographer specialized in Polish dialects and Silesian folklore and ethnol ogy. He died of a heart attack at the age of 58 when his son (who was to die in the same way at the same age) was only 14. -

This page intentionally left blank The Theft of History Jack Goody is one of the pre-eminent social scientists in the world. Over the past half century his pioneering writings at the intersections of anthropology, history, and social and cultural studies have made him one of the most widely read, most widely cited, and most widely translated scholars working today. In The Theft of History Goody builds on his own previous work (notably The East in the West)toextend further his highly influential critique of what he sees as the pervasive Eurocentric, or Occidental- ist, biases of so much western historical writing, and the consequent ‘theft’ by the west of the achievements of other cultures in the inven- tion of (notably) democracy, capitalism, individualism, and love. This argument will generate passionate debate, as his previous works have done, and many will dissent from Goody’s perceptive conclusions. Few, however, will be able to ignore the force of his thought, or the breadth of knowledge brought to the discussion. The Theft of History discusses a number of theorists in detail, includ- ing Marx, Weber, and Norbert Elias, and engages with critical admira- tion western historians like Fernand Braudel, Moses Finley, and Perry Anderson. Many questions of method are raised in these discussions, and Goody proposes a new comparative methodology for cross-cultural analysis, one that gives a much more sophisticated basis for assessing divergent historical outcomes, and replaces outmoded simple differ- ences between, for example, the ‘backward East’ and the ‘inventive West’. Historians, anthropologists, social theorists, and cultural critics will all find something of real value in The Theft of History. -

Pula: Botswana Journal of African Studies, vo1.12, nos.1 & 2 (1998) Isaac Schapera: a bibliography Suzette Heald Department of Sociology, University of Botswana, Abstract The extraordinary record of published scholarship by Isaac Schapera stretches from 1923 right up to date, with publications forthcoming in 1999. This bibliography covers almost two hundred titles. His main subject of interest up to 1930 was the Khoesan of South Africa. Thereafter he published on the Tswana of Botswana, beginning with studies of Kgatla society and literature, and moving into general Tswana law and society by the time of his classic Handbookof Tswana Law and Custom in 1938, commissioned by the Bechuanaland Protectorate colonial administration. In the 1940s he produced many studies of Tswana land tenure and history, including unpublished official reports. From the 1950s he definitively edited 19th century source materials on the Tswana, notably the unpublished papers of David Livingstone, and continued producing his own original studies at a prodigious rate into the 1970s. Important latter studies have been in the field of indigenous law and government, many in the Journalof African Law,founded in his honour. Introduction This bibliography has been compiled to honour Isaac Schapera, born 23rd June 1905, and to introduce new generations of scholars to the full range of his work by providing an updated and accessible listing.
