Lenin in Swit- zerland between August 1916 and March 1917. Most of the articles are expressive of the struggle Lenin and the Bolsheviks waged against the imperialist war and the treasonous policy of the avowed social-chauvinist and Centrist leaders of the Second International parties. In this category belong “Imperialism and the Split in Socialism”, “Ten ‘Socialist’ Ministers!”, “Bourgeois Pacifism and So- cialist Pacifism”, “To the Workers Who Support the Struggle Against the War and Against the Socialists Who Have Sided with Their Governments”. The volume includes Lenin’s famous article “The Military Programme of the Proletarian Revolution”, in which, using the data on imperialist capitalism contained in his Imperial- ism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism, he elaborates the new theoretical proposition on the impossibility of the simultaneous triumph of socialism in all countries and the possibility of its triumph in one single capitalist country. In this article, Lenin also substantiates the theory of just and unjust wars. Articles defining the tasks of the revolutionary Social- Democrats in the imperialist war of 1914-18 hold an import- ant place in Lenin’s writings of this period. These include “Tasks of the Left Zimmerwaldists in the Swiss Social- Democratic Party”, “Principles Involved in the War Issue”, “On the Defence of the Fatherland Issue” and “Defence of Neutrality”. In “The Nascent Trend of Imperialist Economism”, “Reply to P. Kievsky (Y. Pyatakov)”, “A Caricature of Marxism and Imperialist Economism”, Lenin criticises the attitude 12 CONTENTS of the anti-Party Bukharin-Pyatakov group as being hostile to Marxism, and elaborates the Bolshevik programme on the national question in adaptation to the new conditions of history. The volume also includes the “Lecture on the 1905 Revo- lution”, delivered at a gathering of young workers in Zurich. In it Lenin gives a profound interpretative generalisation of the first Russian revolution. “Draft Theses, March 4 (17), 1917”, “Letters from Afar”, “The Tasks of the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party in the Russian Revolution”, “The Revolution in Russia and the Tasks of the Workers of All Countries”, and several other articles, written in the early days of the February Revolution, analyse the alignment of class forces and out- line the prospect for transition from bourgeois-democratic to socialist revolution. Six items are here published for the first time as part of the Collected Works. “Proposed Amendments to the Resolution on the War Issue” and “The Story of One Short Period in the Life of One Socialist Party” discuss the fight waged by the Left forces within the Swiss Social- Democratic Party. Statistics and Sociology brings out the part played by national movements in the international labour movement. “Telegram to the Bolsheviks Leaving for Russia” and “Letter to Volksrecht” explain the Bolshevik tactics in the revolution. “Decision of the Collegium Abroad, the Central Committee of the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party” is directed against Menshevik attempts to prevent Lenin and the other Bolsheviks returning to Russia. V. I. LENIN 1917 13 NASCENT TREND OF IMPERIALIST ECONOMISM1 The old Economism2 of 1894-1902 reasoned thus: the Narodniks3 have been refuted; capitalism has triumphed in Russia. Consequently, there can be no question of political revolution. The practical conclusion: either “economic struggle be left to the workers and political struggle to the liberals”—that is

  • French Women's Writing 1900-1938
Overlooked and Overshadowed: French Women’s Writing 1900-1938 Margaret Ann Victoria Goldswain Student No: 18550362 Bachelor of Arts (UNISA). Bachelor of Arts (UWA) Diploma in Modern Languages (French) (UWA) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities (Discipline-French) 2014 ABSTRACT Overlooked and Overshadowed: French Women’s Writing 1900-1938 This study examines how women in France between 1900 and 1938 (before during and after the Great War) were represented in the writings of four selected women writers - Marcelle Tinayre (1870-1948), Colette Yver (1874-1953), Lucie Delarue-Mardrus (1874-1945) and Marcelle Capy (1891-1962). These authors, fêted in their time have now been largely excluded from contemporary studies on women in early twentieth-century France. The thesis demonstrates how their personal circumstances and the politico-social events of 1900-1938 influenced the way each writer represented women over time, and reveals that women’s writings were not homogenous in theme or in focus. By reading these texts alongside other contemporaneous texts (newspaper articles, reviews and writings by other women), the analyses show that Tinayre, Yver, Delarue-Madrus and Capy challenge and complicate stereotypical perspectives produced mainly by male authors of the same era. Using a longitudinal approach, the study explores each author’s selected texts across three distinct periods - the belle époque, the Great War and the inter-war. Such a reading makes it possible to assess changes in their writing in response to contemporary social and political events in France. By looking at four writers writing across the same era the diversity of women’s lives is also underlined.

  • Connections Between Civilian and Military Dissidence During the French Crisis of 1917 by Cora J
“The Worst Winds of Revolt”: Connections Between Civilian and Military Dissidence During the French Crisis of 1917 by Cora Jackson Bachelor of Arts, University of New Brunswick, 2018 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Academic Unit of History Supervisor: Sean Kennedy, PhD, History Examining Board: Sarah-Jane Corke, PhD, History, Chair Lisa M. Todd, PhD, History Matthew Sears, PhD, Classics and Ancient History This thesis is accepted by the Dean of Graduate Studies THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK May 2020 ©Cora Jackson, 2020 ABSTRACT This thesis, rooted in the fields of social, cultural, and military history, examines connections and correlations between civilian and military dissidence during the French Crisis of 1917. Previous studies on the Crisis have isolated moments of unrest on the home-front from those occurring on the Western Front, which has in turn created a significant gap in historiography and in popular memory. This research seeks to complicate the narrative of the Crisis by connecting mutinies in the French Army on the Western Front to labour actions at home, arguing that both movements are key to a better understanding of civil-military relations in France during the Great War. This thesis explores their shared motivations and further analyses the ways in which soldiers and civilians shaped, influenced, and legitimized each other’s dissent in an effort to reclaim their political voice from their war-time state. ii DEDICATION To the strikers and mutineers. Vive la Révolution. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The completion of this thesis is due in large part to all the wonderful people who have supported and encouraged me over the past two years.

  • Lev Trotsky a Parigi Durante La Prima Guerra Mondiale1
During World War I. Recollections of a Comrade and Co-Worker», The New International. Revue syndicaliste révolutionnaire, a. XIX, n. 344 (Nuova serie, n. 43), ottobre 1950, pp. 1-8. August 1914-February 1917, Macmillan, Basingstoke 2000.
