And Kyle watches the two loves of his life leave him behind. PRODUCTION NOTES The idea for EATING OUT began as sort of a joke. While in a screenwriting class at California Institute of the Arts, I was required to write one feature-length screenplay every semester. I was tapped out of high concept and emotionally wrenching ideas so, to amuse myself, I wrote intense gay sex scenes to make the cute straight guys read out loud in class. Then my conscience got the better of me and to justify the sex I threw in a lot of funny lines, then I wanted to care about the characters, then a storyline… Before I knew it, EATING OUT was born.

DERR Dissertation Director: Elizabeth R. Petrick, PH.D. Computer technology has not always been dominated by men. Prior to 1984, women earning computer science degrees skyrocketed to nearly 37%. After this peak, the numbers dwindled down to just 17% by 2012. What happened here? This paper tells the story of how women grew to become more and more marginalized not only from computing, but from the culture of video games that would become extremely popular as home computers became more available to the public. This story traces how gender roles and stereotypes go on to gatekeep women from participating in video game and computer culture from the 1970s and well into the 2000s and beyond. This gatekeeping is perpetuated through the attitudes and perspectives of men who were typically the developers of computer hardware, software and video games. Public attitudes on violence and sexuality also contributed to the stereotyping of both young boys and girls, which was further reinforced through the narratives of the media.

Yet in light of the gaming industry’s huge leaps for- ward in design quality, and, more importantly, the economic and G textual convergences of fi lm and television with gaming, it is in- creasingly imperative that media scholars pay close attention to games. Many fi lms and television programs include a game as part of their text, a growing number of storytellers are thinking and creating across media, and many media corporations are trying their best to expand revenues by wedding gaming with fi lm and television. This In Focus is about this process of convergence. Convergence has inspired considerable excitement both from pro- ducers who see the potential for a revolution in storytelling methods and scope and from audiences seeking to renegotiate their relationship with the media industries. Convergence has also been cause for con- siderable concern for those who see the potential for the media indus- tries to capitalize on it, thwarting competition and rewriting laws and business models to gain yet more control over the audience-consumer. These combined hopes and worries for convergence illustrate one of its key qualities: convergence produces more than just the sum of its parts. Convergence is, to use a gaming metaphor, like that most clichéd move of videogames, the “double jump.” This action often comes when one’s avatar must leap from one moving platform to another. The player must wait until the perfect moment to perform not just a jump, but a “double jump,” wherein the avatar begins a new jump while at the peak of its fi rst jump.

Willis, LPC Hope and Recovery n August 12, 2014, the day after Robin Wil- liams committed suicide, I was talking to my O neighbor about this tragic death. My neighbor stated, “What a fool, he had everything and any resource money could afford.” My reply: “We never know what is going on in someone else’s life and it is not up to us to judge his last moments. He must have been feeling despair, loneliness and hopeless at the moment.” My neighbor, knowing that I am a mental health therapist, politely conceded, knowing this was not a topic I would change my opinion on. The truth is that in that last moment before someone takes his own life, he is in the darkest moment of his life and thinks this is the answer. In this article, we will explore depression, addiction and how they tie together. Most importantly, we will explore hope and recovery. The one glaring truth that comes to light after Robin Williams’ suicide is that depression, addiction and suicide do not discriminate. Depression and addiction are not diseases that are more likely to occur in the poor or the rich. The truth is that depression and addiction are human diseases; no matter whether you are rich, poor or middle class. Robin Williams’ death does bring up the connection between creativity and mental illness. A study completed earlier this year by the British Journal of Psychiatry found a “Hope begins with getting help for yourself or for a loved one connection between creativity, comedic ability (whether it be writing or performing) and depression.
