The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants.

    Johann Weyer Vorkämpfer gegen den Hexenwahn am Hofe Wilhelm V Jennifer Riemek B.A. Veröffentlichung 01.07.2021 für extempore.org 1 Johann Weyer – Vorkämpfer gegen den Hexenwahn am Hofe Wilhelm V: Johann Weyer (1515/16 – 1588) – Medicus am Hofe des Herzogs Wilhelm V. im Herzogtum Jülich-Kleve-Berg, gilt als der erste Bekämpfer des Hexenwahns im 16. Jahrhundert. Mit seiner im Jahre 1563 veröffentlichen Schrift De praestigiis daemonum (zu Deutsch: Von den Blendwerken der Dämonen) versuchte er als erster den weitverbreiteten Hexenglauben in Mittel- und Zentraleuropa zu bekämpfen. Dieses Werk Weyers stellt die Grundlage für die Gegner der Hexenverfolgung in der frühen Neuzeit dar und erschien in zahlreichen Auflagen und Übersetzungen. Wir befinden uns im 16. Jahrhundert und somit an der Schwelle zur Frühen Neuzeit, in welcher der Hexenwahn in Mittel- und Zentraleuropa nochmals angefacht wurde. Die Zeit des Wirkens von Weyer und vieler seiner Gegner lässt sich auf die dritte Phase der Hexenverfolgung zwischen 1560 und 1630/80, datieren. Dieser Phase vorangingen in die erste Phase von 1420 bis 1480 und die zweite Phase von 1480 bis 1520. Insgesamt lassen sich die drei Phasen der Hexenverfolgung wie folgt beschreiben: „Generell kann ein Ansteigen der Verfolgungstätigkeit nach 1420, ein Nachlassen zwischen 1520 und 1560, konzentrierte Hexenjagden mit außergewöhnlich hohen Opferzahlen zwischen 1560 und 1630 sowie danach ein langsames Abebben der Hinrichtungen bis 1800 festgestellt werden.“1 Die Verfolgungen der sogenannten Hexen und Zauberer wurden durch zahlreiche Inquisitoren propagiert und zum Ziel für die allgemeine Sicherheit erklärt. Hier hat sich besonders der Dominikanermönch Heinrich Kramer (lat. Institoris) hervorgetan, dem der zweifelhafte Ruhm zukommt, mit dem „Malleus malificorum – Hexenhammer“, einen der frühen Bestseller der Weltgeschichte verfasst zu haben.

April 2015 D 61 Düsseldorf 2015 i ii Vorwort „Was lange währt wird endlich gut“, so ließe sich mein Promotionsvorhaben wohl am besten überschreiben, denn lang hat es gedauert, wenn man den Zeitpunkt meiner Magisterarbeit als Ausgangspunkt nimmt. Viele Irrungen und Wirrungen folgten auf diese Magisterarbeit und auch ein aufgegebenes Dissertationsprojekt, das nun als Blog wohl doch noch zu Ehren kommen wird. In all den Jahren gab wohl als Einziger mein Mann Ludger nie den Glauben auf. Durch alle Höhen und Tiefen der Dissertation hat er mich begleitet, mir Mut zugesprochen und unerschüt- terlich daran geglaubt, dass ich doch eines wundervollen Tages dieses Monstrum besiegen werde. Dafür möchte ich „Danke“ sagen, auch wenn dieses Wort zu klein dafür ist. Ein weiterer Dank gebührt meinem Doktorvater Prof. Dr. Achim Landwehr, der mich als „altgediente“ Doktorandin und trotz eines aufgegebenen Themas als Doktorandin angenommen hat und mir so einen Neustart ermöglichte. Ganz besonderer Dank gebührt auch meinem Schreibtreff: Ohne Euch hätte ich wohl nie die Kraft gefunden nochmal ganz von vorne anzufangen.
