  • The Religious Lifeworlds of Canada's Goan and Anglo-Indian Communities
Brown Baby Jesus: The Religious Lifeworlds of Canada’s Goan and Anglo-Indian Communities Kathryn Carrière Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the PhD degree in Religion and Classics Religion and Classics Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Kathryn Carrière, Ottawa, Canada, 2011 I dedicate this thesis to my husband Reg and our son Gabriel who, of all souls on this Earth, are most dear to me. And, thank you to my Mum and Dad, for teaching me that faith and love come first and foremost. Abstract Employing the concepts of lifeworld (Lebenswelt) and system as primarily discussed by Edmund Husserl and Jürgen Habermas, this dissertation argues that the lifeworlds of Anglo- Indian and Goan Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have permitted members of these communities to relatively easily understand, interact with and manoeuvre through Canada’s democratic, individualistic and market-driven system. Suggesting that the Catholic faith serves as a multi-dimensional primary lens for Canadian Goan and Anglo-Indians, this sociological ethnography explores how religion has and continues affect their identity as diasporic post- colonial communities. Modifying key elements of traditional Indian culture to reflect their Catholic beliefs, these migrants consider their faith to be the very backdrop upon which their life experiences render meaningful. Through systematic qualitative case studies, I uncover how these individuals have successfully maintained a sense of security and ethnic pride amidst the myriad cultures and religions found in Canada’s multicultural society. Oscillating between the fuzzy boundaries of the Indian traditional and North American liberal worlds, Anglo-Indians and Goans attribute their achievements to their open-minded Westernized upbringing, their traditional Indian roots and their Catholic-centred principles effectively making them, in their opinions, admirable models of accommodation to Canada’s system.

Falowo 1, Amanda Chulayo 1,2 and Voster Muchenje 1 1 Department of Livestock and Pasture Science, University of Fort Hare, Private Bag X314, Alice 5700, South Africa; [email protected] (A.B.F.); [email protected] (A.C.); [email protected] (V.M.) 2 Dohne Agricultural Development Institute, Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Private Bag X15, Stutterheim 4935, South Africa * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +27-833-46-4435 Received: 9 May 2017; Accepted: 16 June 2017; Published: 22 June 2017 Abstract: The consumption of animal by-products has continued to witness tremendous growth over the last decade. This is due to its potential to combat protein malnutrition and food insecurity in many countries. Shortly after slaughter, animal by-products are separated into edible or inedible parts. The edible part accounts for 55% of the production while the remaining part is regarded as inedible by-products (IEBPs). These IEBPs can be re-processed into sustainable products for agricultural and industrial uses. The efficient utilization of animal by-products can alleviate the prevailing cost and scarcity of feed materials, which have high competition between animals and humans. This will also aid in reducing environmental pollution in the society. In this regard, proper utilization of animal by-products such as rumen digesta can result in cheaper feed, reduction in competition and lower cost of production. Over the years, the utilization of animal by-products such as rumen digesta as feed in livestock feed has been successfully carried out without any adverse effect on the animals.

  • Manual Chapter - Cuisine (5 January 1993) H
•· I Manual Chapter - Cuisine (5 January 1993) H. cuisine cuisine is used to describe the culinary derivation of a food. H.1 Definition cuisine is characterized by dietary staples and foods typically consumed; specific ingredients in mixed dishes; types of fats, oils, seasonings, and sauces used; food preparation techniques and cooking methods; and dietary patterns. The culinary characteristics of population groups have developed and continue to develop over time. Cuisines have traditional names based primarily on geographic origin. A few cuisine names reflect ethnicity or other factors. Cuisines with several or multiple influences are listed in the hierarchy according to their major influence. Descriptors from this factor should be used primarily for prepared food products (e.g., entrees, desserts, cheeses, breads, sausages, and wines). Descriptors for cuisine should only be used if the cuisine can be easily determined from external evidence such as: the food name; a cuisine indication on a food label; the culinary identification of a restaurant, recipe, or cookbook; or the country of origin of the food, unless another cuisine is indicated. The indexer is not required to make a judgement about cuisine, nor is the indexer required to examine a food to determine its cuisine. Note that some food names have geographic descriptors that do not always identify a cuisine (e.g., Swiss cheese, Brussels sprouts). If in doubt, refer to the foods already indexed to determine whether the food name indicates a specific cuisine. The cuisine of foods may be important in establishing relationships of diet to health and disease. Cuisine provides information about a food from a cultural viewpoint and may assist in assist in more clearly identifying a food.

  • Indian Regional Cooking
CLASS: SYBSCHS SUBJECT: PRINCIPLES OF QUANTITY FOOD PRODUCTION FACULTY: CHEF GAURI SHAH Indian Regional cooking Indian cuisine consists of a wide variety of regional and traditional cuisines native to the Indian subcontinent. Given the range of diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic groups, and occupations, these cuisines vary substantially from each other and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Indian food is also heavily influenced by religion, in particular Hindu, cultural choices and traditions. The cuisine is also influenced by centuries of Islamic rule, particularly the Mughal rule. Samosas and pilafs can be regarded as examples.Historical events such as foreign invasions, trade relations, and colonialism have played a role in introducing certain foods to this country. The Columbian discovery of the New World brought a number of new vegetables and fruit to India. A number of these such as the potato, tomatoes, chillies, peanuts, and Guava have become staples in many regions of India. Indian cuisine can be said to have evolved along lines parallel to Indian History. India has ancient cultural heritage, which is dependent on religion, geography, and socio-economic conditions. Traditionally Indian cooking has been handed down through the generations by demonstrations and word of mouth. Strong impact was made on Indian cuisine during the reign of Mughals in the sixteenth century, who were fond of good living, cooking, and eating. Muslim cooking was based on meat. Their influence was strongest in North and central India. Since then, well known Mughlai dishes were evolved, which have soon developed into an important culinary art and is part of Indian cuisine.
