The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure® is the world’s largest 5K event! More than 66,000 people participated in the 2009 Race and $3.25 million in net proceeds were raised. This year, organizers expect more than 60,000 par- ticipants and have a goal to raise $3.5 million in net proceeds. Up to seventy- five percent of the net money raised by the Komen St. Louis Affiliate stays in the St. Louis area to fund screening, treatment, education and research programs. A minimum of twenty-five percent of money raised goes to the National Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program to fund research. Visit www.komenstlouis.org to register online for this year’s Race. Registration forms are available at FLEET FEET Sports stores, New Balance stores (2 locations), Saint Louis Bread Co. stores, Schnucks Supermarkets and Wehrenberg Theatres. This year, the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure will include a timed run, sponsored by FLEET FEET Sports. For serious runners and those who would simply like their exact time for the 5K, this will be a great opportunity to make a real difference in the fight against breast cancer while pursuing personal running and fitness goals. By registering for the Race, participants are automatically enrolled in the Friends for the Cure Pledge Program which allows individuals to raise money to provide screening, treatment, education and research programs in the St. Louis area. Through an easy online site, each participant receives a fundraising Web page that can be personalized. Friends and family can go to the participant’s page to make donations in support of their efforts to find the cures for breast cancer. Survivors are the stars of the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure and an inspiration. Registered breast cancer survivors will again receive a pink t-shirt and complimentary cap provided by Zeta Tau Alpha, sponsor of the Breast Cancer Survi- vor Recognition Program. More surprisingly, no athletes were listed among the 300 or so entries, either in a generalist or specific category: perhaps, because of the significance of amateurism as a prevailing ethos in sport until the 1960s. Their thought-provoking silent pro- POW-WOW page 7 test against hate and Proposition 8 helped to create the widely-popular NO H8 Campaign that has transcended race, color, religion, sexuality and party lines (Cindy McCain just posed). I recently joined “the boys” in their studio in Los Angeles to have my photograph taken and chat with Adam and Jeff about Proposition 8, the upcoming pool party at The Dinah in Palm Springs and how the whirlwind that is the NO H8 Campaign all began. Oh, and Rosie O’Donnell—if you’re listening, they want you to call them. Windy City Times: By now, I’m pretty con- fident that almost everyone has seen or at least heard of the NO H8 Campaign. • Everywhere and Nowhere: the Forgotten Past and Clouded Future of American Professional Soccer from the Perspective of Massachusetts Steven Apostolov*
Soccer & Society Vol. 13, No. 4, July 2012, 510–535 Everywhere and nowhere: the forgotten past and clouded future of American professional soccer from the perspective of Massachusetts Steven Apostolov* Department of Political Science, University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA, USA Professional soccer in the USA enjoyed several moments of popularity through- out the twentieth century. Professional soccer leagues were founded, some as early as the 1890s. In spite of that, the sport has never caught fire at the profes- sional level. Soccer leagues have not only been in the shadow of baseball, foot- ball, basketball and, most recently, ice hockey, but with the exception of Major League Soccer, a newcomer on the mainstream sporting scene, all of them have folded within a couple of decades. This essay provides insight as to why profes- sional soccer has failed to attain the status of a major American sport. It also analyses the development of professional soccer in the USA through the scope of immigration and from the perspective of Massachusetts. Introduction US soccer is not a common topic among historians. It is not a common topic among soccer fans, either. If you ask any admirer of sports to name the world’s fin- est nations in soccer, the list will be long. Depending on their nationality, different soccer lovers will provide different answers. The Dutch would only grudgingly con- cede the Spaniards played better in the 2010 World Cup final, and Brazilians still believe they had the ability to capture a sixth World Cup title in South Africa. It would never occur to a soccer fan, however, to include the USA among the world’s leading powers of the game.

Gallimore will enter the 2010 season ranked second on the Pac-10 coaching charts in all-time victories (169) and in conference wins (64). In the process of registering team victories, she has also overseen the individual development of players. Two of her former players, Hope Solo and Tina Ellertson (Frimpong), are playing in the Women's Pro Soccer league and were chosen as All-Stars in the inaugural season. As members of the Saint Louis Athletica, Solo was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year while Ellertson was an All-Star defender.
