2 From the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs

Dear Brother Alumni and Friends of Cathedral,

Thank you for helping to make this such a wonderful year here at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary. Please know that you, as alumni, friends and benefactors of Cathedral, are very much part of our community. Not a day goes by that I do not have a visit from an alumnus to the school. Whether you attended 555 Washington Avenue or here in Elmhurst, whether you attended the six year program or the four year high school, Cathedral has helped to shape us into the men we are today.

We have had some wonderful experiences since the last newsletter went to press. In December, the Tuition Assistance Program was inaugurated at the rectory of St. James Cathedral-Basilica in . Special thanks to Msgr. John J. Strynkowski, '58, St. James’ Rector, for hosting us that night. Thanks, too, to Michael Cox, '74, and Jerry Magaldi, '74, for spearheading this program for us. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the program is off to a great start: $115,485.00 has been collected to date, all going to help bring young men who are open to priestly vocations and who could not necessarily afford it to Cathedral Prep.

Thanks, too, to all those who are assisting in this year’s Annual Appeal. Our chairman, John Casey, '57, and Chris Wagner, '89, and their committee have done a wonderful job “casting the net,” this year’s theme, trying to get as many alumni and friends involved, all helping to create a tremendous future for the young men at Cathedral Prep. Again, this issue contains a listing of those who gave so far to this year’s appeal. It certainly is not too late to participate!

I have been blessed by those loyal friends and alumni who help form the committees here at Cathedral: our Alumni Executive Board, St. Matthew Society, Hall of Fame Committee, Golf Committee, Day at the Races Committee and so many others. Thank you all for helping make my first year as Director of Development and Alumni Affairs such an easy transition.

Please know that “casting the net,” is more than just a phrase for our Annual Appeal- it’s what our office of Development and Alumni Affairs is trying to do. We hope that you know that you are always welcome to come and visit Cathedral Prep. Feel free to stop by and whatever assistance my staff and I can offer you, we'll be happy to do so. Know that you are remembered daily here at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in our chapel here at Cathedral. Please pray for me as well!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. John P. Cush, '90 Director of Development and Alumni Affairs Spiritual Director

9 Annual Appeal Highlights by Dcn. Chris Wagner, '89 and John Casey, '57, Co-Chairmen of the 2010-2011 Annual Appeal

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have made a contribution to either, the Annual Appeal or to the Tuition Assistance Program, or to both. These programs are in place to help advance the young men who are currently being formed at Cathedral Prep Seminary. It is truly humbling to see such a wonderful response by all of those who support our efforts. We have had a phenomenal year considering the economic environment. This is a testimony not only to all who make a contribution but also to the school, itself, because everyone realized that there is a genuine need and were able to respond to that need.

As of June 15, 2011 we have collected $176,750 to help run our Alma Mater and service her students. Although this seems like a large sum of money, due to escalating costs of operation coupled with tuition assistance, this amount does not go very far.

As we strive to have each class participate in this annual event please continue to send us updated information for yourselves as well as for your classmates. Let us know how we can serve you and your needs. All new ideas are welcomed for any and all Alumni activities, both in house and outside the school. We want to share with you what is going at The Prep.

We would like to remind everybody that it is not too late to make a contribution for this year. The Annual Appeal will wrap up on August 31, 2011.. If you or someone you know whose name does not appear on our list of donors below and you would like to give, please use the envelope enclosed in our newsletter.

15 FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD ENDS 2010 - 2011 SESSION by Michael Cox, '74, Chairman

Cathedral Prep's Financial Development Board concluded it's work for the 2010 - 2011 academic year with results that can be described as both productive and innovative. I use these terms not only because they accurately describe the results of the FDB's work, but also because they reflect the adherence by its members to the guidelines and directives of the Mission Statement we adopted in the beginning of the year.

In this, our second full year as a board, we have solidified our focus as a team and not only successfully continued our past year's work, but also brought forward a new initiative in the Tuition Assistance Fund which was inaugurated in December, 2010 and in six short months has already raised $115,485.00. The enthusiasm and generosity in response to the launch of this fund has been nothing short of astounding.

As mentioned above, this is our second full year as a sitting board and as such we should be handing over our responsibilities and labors to a new team of members since we serve two year terms. However, at the request of Fr. Fred Marano, '82, and Fr. Cush, '90, we have all agreed to serve for a third year in order to continue and further develop the work we have begun. This extension of terms was unanimously agreed to at our regular meeting with a re-dedication to our mission and an invocation and blessing offered by Fr. John Cush.

DAY AT BELMONT On Saturday, June 18, 2011, Cathedral Prep held its second annual Day at Belmont Park. It was a fun and successful day, almost doubling the number of people who attended! We had 116 people present, alumni, friends, benefactors and faculty, all of whom came out to have a great time, catch up with old friends, meet new friends and to help the mission of Cathedral Prep Seminary.

Thanks to Rich Schulhoff, ’68, Q, who arranged the whole event and without whom we could not have the event! Rich was a tremendous host and made the day fun! Thanks to Rich, the fifth race was named after Cathedral Prep and Katie McCague, the sister of Patrick McCague, ’11, presented the trophy to the winning jockey. Kerry Sisson,’67 B, from Wells Fargo, assisted in sponsoring the event and was incredibly helpful in organizing the day.

Dr. John Kehoe, ’66HS , was a very capable master of ceremonies for our raffles, and Mrs. Rosemary McCague, mother of Pat McCague, ’11, truly ran the whole day in terms of raffles, ably assited by her daughter, Katie. Special thanks to Rosemary, Charles and Kristen Freile, the family of Kevin Freile, ’11, who helped with the raffles as well as committee members Greg Ronan, ’67 Q, and Deacon Candidate Eugene Wolfarth and his wife, Brenda.

It was a great day and is now a permanent part of our Cathedral alumni scene! Please join us next year for another day at Belmont! Visit our alumni website at www.cathedralprepalumni.com for more pictures of the event.

16 12th ANNUAL HALL OF FAME DINNER - SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, 2011 Denis Tarpey, '65, Hall of Fame Chairman

This year’s Cathedral Prep Hall of Fame Dinner was held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. The event drew a full house to recognize some of the men who have brought positive recognition to Cathedral by their actions in and after high school. We have six new members who were inducted in this year: George Lopez ’68, Msgr. Sean Ogle ’68, Bob Brix ’76, Jim Farmer ’80, Garrett Ryan ’84, and Msgr. Anthony Hernandez ’86.

“Great” was a term often used to describe George Lopez, while his classmate, Msgr. Sean Ogle ‘68 founded the Forensics group and always showed his spirit and love for Cathedral. Bob Brix ’72 was a unanimous selection who carried his competitive basketball spirit into the business world. Jim Farmer ’80 excelled in baseball and basketball and has left to right: Fr. Fred Marano, Jim Farmer, Msgr. Sean Ogle, Msgr. continued to help the Prep with involvement on many committees. When Anthony Hernandez, George Lopez, Garrett Ryan, Bob Brix, Fr. you look at the track program, you will hear so many mention the name of Sweeney, Fr. John Cush, Jim Dilg Garrett Ryan ’84 in the top group. Msgr. Anthony Hernandez ’86 was a catcher for the baseball team who would later serve as a bridge between the Brooklyn and Queens students. His more recent assignment is to serve as a Chancellor for the Diocese.

So many people have helped Cathedral Prep over its history to be recognized as an outstanding school which prepared many people for roles of leadership in life and the Church. Our hope is that people of all years will take time next January to attend this dinner which is part of the recognition for a special group.

Cathedral Preparatory Seminary Honors Mr. James G. Dilg For 47 Years of Service

On Saturday, March 26, 2011, Cathedral Preparatory Seminary honored Mr. James G. Dilg for his 47 years of service with a testimonial dinner held at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston. 17 Biography of James G. Dilg

Mr. James G. Dilg was born in the Bronx and grew up like most of the young men of his age- interested in sports, active in his parish life and in his school work. He attended College Prep as a high school student and, upon graduation, decided to attend . There, Jim decided to pursue a career in education. Upon graduation, Jim applied for a job at a small school in Queens that he did not intend to stay all that long- Cathedral Preparatory Seminary. 1964 marked the second full year of Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst being its own institution and the school was looking for a new physical education instructor. He would be, outside of the librarian, Mrs. Vera Coutard, the only lay person on the faculty of Cathedral Prep, which at that time, consisted entirely of priests. The late Fr. (later Msgr.) George Fogarty was the Vice-Rector, who ran the daily affairs of the school, under the guidance and rectorship of Msgr. Robert Welsh. This young man began his teaching career at Cathedral joining the ranks of men like Fathers Gotimer, Keane, Troike, Dietz, Larkin, Stafford, McGann and Kirrane among many others and a new era in the history of Cathedral began.

As Jim progressed in his time at Cathedral, he began coaching Basketball, Track, and Baseball. Through his career of coaching, Jim's teams met with success, however not always on the court or field. Jim's teams always knew how important it was to be men of leadership, dignity, teamwork and integrity. Jim's teams became family and the young men whom he coached and taught knew Jim as a role model, a example of Catholic Christian spirituality and, above all, a trusted friend and guide.

In the classroom, Jim taught Physical Education to every man who passed through Cathedral's doors until 2006. Many were blessed to have Jim for Health and Environmental Biology, or to have Jim in home room or as an instructor in the Father Troike Leadership Program. Others will recall Jim's continual presence at daily Mass in the Chapel or his liturgical service as a lector and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.

Through the rectorships of Msgr. Welsh and Fogarty, Msgr. John Egan, Msgr. Vincent Keane, Fr. Joseph Cunningham, Msgr. Philip Reilly, Bishop Ignatius Catanello, Msgr. Richard Marchese, Msgr. Joseph Calise and Fr. Fred Marano, Cathedral Prep was blessed with the kind presence of Jim Dilg. As Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, Jim helped Cathedral to grow to new heights. Countless hours preparing for events, numberless phone calls and e-mails helped Jim to become the living face of Cathedral Preparatory Seminary and an example of the love of Christ to all whom he encountered.

Jim is blessed by his wife, Kathy, their children, Maureen, Patty, and Matthew, and their grandchildren Christopher and Felicity. He remains for all of us at Cathedral a true friend and we are happy now to call our teacher a brother alumnus with the conferral of an honorary diploma by Fr. Fred Marano, Rector-Principal this evening.

CATHEDRAL PREP'S SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS & INTERSCHOLASTIC AWARDS DINNER by John O'Brien, '01, Athletic Director As the school year draws to a close it is with great pride that I look back on the 2010-2011 interscholastic season. Each of our teams worked hard and were well-prepared by their coaches to compete in their respective seasons. The year was highlighted by junior Conor Gallagher moving into tenth place on Cathedral's top twenty list of Cross Country performances. Another highlight was our varsity baseball team defeating the defending champion and previously undefeated Monsignor Scanlan High School (Bronx, NY).

Congratulations to all of our student-athletes who received awards at our annual Interscholastic Awards Dinner, held on May 25th. The evening was highlighted by an inspirational talk by Fr. NY Cathedral Prep Visits Elmhurst Cathedral Prep On Saturday, March 13, 2011, faculty and students of the Archdiocese of New York's Cathedral Prep Seminary Program, located at Saint Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie, visited Cathedral Prep Seminary in Elmhurst. 30 young men from the Dunwoodie program, which meets each month for a weekend program of priestly vocation discernment, accompanied by Fr. Luke Sweeney, Archdiocesan Vocation Director and Fr. Luis Saldana, Rector of Saint College Seminary, came to spend the day with over 50 of the Elmhurst Cathedral young men. Fr. After a tour, Mass and a pizza lunch, the two Cathedral Preps faced off in basketball, having a great game and much fun! One of the nicest things said about the day is that, by the end of the day, no one could tell what Cathedral Prep a student was from!

Thanks to the efforts of Bishop DiMarzio, Bishop Murphy of Rockville Centre and Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York, Cathedral Prep Seminary in Elmhurst is open to all young men from the greater New York area who are open to the possibility of a priestly vocation. 20 SAINT MATTHEW SOCIETY MASS AND NETWORKING NIGHT by Jerry Magaldi, '74, Saint Matthew Society Committee Chairman

The St. Matthew Society’s mission is to encourage people to come together and share their talents whether personal, business or financial with our alumni, non-alumni, and especially the school. Our second objective is to raise funds from corporations or individuals for tuition assistance for current students at Cathedral or those who desire to attend but cannot afford to do so.

On Thursday, March 10, 2011, the St. Matthew Society once again held their annual Mass and Networking Night with the theme of sharing one’s talents. Mass was celebrated by Fr. John Cush, '90, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, concelebrated by Fr. Fred Marano, '82, Rector- Principal, Fr. James Kuroly, '98, Director of Recruitment and Apostolic Works, Fr. William Sweeney, '73, Alumni Executive Board President, Msgr. James McDonald, '61, Pastor of St. Aidan's, Williston Park and his associate and attended by the St. Matthew Society Committee and invited colleagues, business associates and friends.

After Mass, the night began with opening prayer by Fr. Kuroly, and a welcoming by Fr. Cush and Jerry Magaldi, '74, Chairman of the St. Matthew Society. The night, sponsored by the St. Matthew Society Committee, included a moving talk by Jerry Magaldi concerning his love for the Church and his support for vocations, especially for his son, Sean , who is currently attending Cathedral Seminary Residence. He spoke of the importance of this night in which business associates can share and network with one another as well as help in raising funds to support Cathedral Prep, where many vocations, both clergy and laity, began for our alumni.

The night continued with a presentation by William Cassese, '11, a graduating senior who thanked all for supporting his discernment and tuition while he attended Cathedral Prep. He urged the attendees to continue to support vocations and to pray for him as he plans to attend Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston.

Robert P. Launer and Stephen X. Palmieri, of Ameriprise, presented his financial services to those present as well as his support for Cathedral Prep. Ameriprise, besides their initial contribution, is offering a program that will donate an additional $100 to the school for each person that meets with them to discuss their financial planning needs and mentions Cathedral Prep. This program will continue for two years. Please call Robert Launer from Ameriprise at (516) 479-5853 for an appointment and mention Cathedral Prep.

This year we had over 90 people mostly consisting of non-alumni representing different corporations. The companies present (names are listed on the Alumni website) were there to share business opportunities with each other and offer services to the individuals present. All the companies present were asked beforehand to make a financial contribution just to come to the event.

The dinner was prepared by Bill Caruana, '72, Mike Cox, '74, Lou D'Amico, '82, Tom Gotimer, '73, John Casey, '57 and Jerry Magaldi, as well as the Cathedral Prep students. Well over a hundred people attended and enjoyed the dinner and dessert (provided by Anthony Cavallaro and Greg Ronan, '67, and Margie Schmidt, whose son Jack now attends Cathedral Prep). Once again everyone expressed that they enjoyed a night of spirituality, networking opportunities and a phenomenal culinary event.

Through St. Matthew’s spirit and intercession, I believe we are giving our Alumni a place to turn in times of their needs. It has also given alumni, non-alumni and corporations an opportunity to share their business with our Cathedral family. But mostly, it has expanded our family to include all those attending that were never part of Cathedral. Please visit our alumni gallery at http://gallery.me.com/cathedralprepalumni#gallery to view pictures from the event and please visit the St. Matthew Society Group Page at http://www.cathedralprepalumni.com/members/group.asp?id=27671 to register and get news concerning Saint Matthew Society's goals and mission. There you may also link to the St. Matthew Society Business Card Center if you wish to network with those who have attended. Thank you to all who attended and thank you for your support of our students. Please keep us all in your prayers and may God continue to bless and spread His graces on Cathedral, her students and staff, our extended family members and all of the Alumni.

21 THE SPORTS PAGE BASEBALL by Rolondo Lopez, Varsity Baseball Coach & Faculty

The 2011 baseball season just like other years in the past is unique. For the first time in recent memory there is no JV team; therefore, the varsity program can start to develop from ground up. This year was to become a rebuilding year and bring back the tradition of Crusader baseball. The season is going well. The Crusaders are in fourth place with a record of 5wins and 6 losses and has an opportunity to host a first round playoff game. The season has many bright spots which include a three-game winning streak during league play. One win came against the defending and previously undefeated champions Msgr. Scalan 3-1. This season has been lead by the lone senior Mathew Dybus, '11, who has led the team in hitting with a .347 average and 17 RBI’s. With upcoming solid players Chris West and John Starace the Crusaders look to make noise in the playoffs which get under way on May 24. The Crusaders are building towards a program that “tradition does not graduate”.

Eight students qualified for the state championships and six qualified for the National Catholic Forensic League Championships.

John Cush, ’90, Spiritual Director. Each week, as a community, the Stations of the Cross were celebrated, led by a different class year.

Students also participated in the Mite Box collection, assisting the Propagation of the Faith.

Loughlan Cameron, parochial vicar of St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa and Most Reverend , Pastor-emeritus of St. Gregory the Great, Brooklyn.

MORAN MASS Each year, the family of the late of Thomas Moran, ’75, gather at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary to celebrate the life and legacy of Tom. As a proud alumnus of Cathedral Prep, Tom often would regale his wife, Sue, and his children with stories of his days as a student. After his death, Sue and her family have kept the annual tradition of awarding a young man entering his senior year with a partial scholarship so that Tom’s love of his time at Cathedral Prep and the important life lessons learned at the Prep could continue with a new generation.

The rising senior honored by the Moran family has to be a man of service to the Cathedral community as well as the greater area. This year, the Moran family granted the award to Brendon Harfmann of St. Matthias, Ridgewood.

Brendon’s involvement at Cathedral Prep is a family affair. His uncle is Fr. John Harfmann, ’55, of the Society of St. Joseph, based out of New Orleans. His brother is Timothy Harfman, ’10, currently a student in St. Bonaventure University, who received the Moran Scholarship in 2009.

Brendon is the head squire of the Frank J. Yerk Columbian Squire Circle at Cathedral and serves as a sacristan, altar server and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion here in our chapel. He is a manager of the Track Team and a member of the varisty Bowling Team.

The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Fred Marano,’82, Rector-Principal and concelebrated by Fr. John Cush, ’90, Spiritual Director and Director of Development and Alumni Affairs and Fr. James Kuroly, ’98, Director of Recruitment and Apostolic Works.

Many thanks to the Moran family for their endless support of Cathedral Prep. Tom is remembered in prayer here at Cathedral and his love for Cathedral is continued in the lives of the young men like Brendon.
