Creating Ripples of

HopeHopeGiving Today Impacting Tomorrow

2009 Annual Report Is Pleased to Honor the Alive in Hope Foundation of the Diocese of Brooklyn for excellence in materials used to promote diocesan stewardship

Awarded for its Total Foundation Effort “God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well.” Romans 12.6-11 11 October 2009 Dallas, Texas Creating Ripples HopeHopeof In 1996 the first gift was made to the Alive in Hope Campaign; a historic event in the life of the Diocese of Brooklyn. That first expression of generosity begot another, and another, leading to the creation of the Alive in Hope Foundation.

Eleven years later, $23 million has been distrib- uted in support of the Catholic community in Brooklyn and Queens.

One act of love calls forth another, creating ripples of hope for generations to come.

Giving Today, Impacting Tomorrow 1 DearDear Dear Friends in Christ, “Do not be afraid of Christ. He takes nothing away, and He gives you everything. When we give ourselves to Him, we receive a hundredfold in return.” Benedict XVI Rooted in deep faith, summoned by hope, and impelled by charity, we join together and sustain the commandment of love. It was clearly love for our Church and its future that led a group of visionaries and caring individuals to form the Alive in Hope Foundation eleven years ago. They recognized that creating a foundation that would gather gifts and grow them over the years would provide for the ministerial needs of our Church. In order to have a sense of the divine and the eternal in your life, you must be a hope-giver to others—not only by how you treat others in your interpersonal transactions but in the way you give your tangible gifts away. When we do this, we have treasures in our heart that no one could possibly dream and you become a relevant part of God’s plan to give hope. Since 1998, thousands of people have been moved by prayer and willingly become part of the plan. Undoubtedly, we recognize that with each passing day, there is an evolution of mission revealed by the needs of those we serve. We invite all to allow Jesus into your hearts, discern your role in His plan and be an instrument of His love. Help us to serve as a catalyst of Catholic philanthropy and join with us as we strive to serve as a living testament and an endless manifestation of His commandment. The Alive in Hope Foundation, thanks to its many generous Hope Builders, will have an enduring impact on parishes, ministries, communities, and on all of God’s people. We thank you and ask others to help us create ripples of hope—ripples that will transform into a mighty current of love. May God bless you always,

Rev. Msgr. John J. Bracken, Chairman

2 FriendsFriends Dear Friends, Creating Ripples of Hope is what we do on a daily basis at the Alive in Hope Foundation. The generosity of others moves forward a current of hope that brings scholarships to those who dream of a Catholic school education, welcomes the stranger into our midst with dignity, serves the elderly, the marginalized and the battered, promotes vocations, and cares for the senior priests who have given their lives in service to God and His people. Eleven years of ripples have created waves of change in the lives of those we serve in Brooklyn and Queens. They travel from shore to shore and person to person. What is the power that moves these waves? Robert F. Kennedy once said, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” These words help us understand our call to service, challenge us to create ripples, and deploy a force of positive energy in our community. They characterize the very nature of people like you—our Ambassadors of Hope. They are our priests, religious, teachers, coaches, business men and women, home-makers; the list goes on and on. Many of you will never see the wide-reaching impact of your generosity—the tidal wave of hope that you precipitated through one act of kindness. Currently, the Alive in Hope Foundation manages over ninety endowment funds. These endowments, by their very essence, are intended to create perpetual ripples of hope. It starts with a donation made in honor or memory of a loved one. From there, that financial gift manifests itself through generous acts of kindness, touching the lives of the recipient and all they come into contact with on their journey. I am sure when these Ambassadors of Hope decided to create their funds, they questioned the impact that one “tiny” fund would have on the life of the Church in Brooklyn and Queens. If you take the time to review this report, visit our website or watch our recent video, the impact is clear. Our dream is to house hundreds upon hundreds of “tiny” funds, so that we can create a HUGE wave of hope for others; one that will take the Catholic community of Brooklyn and Queens from today, into tomorrow, and many years to come. This stewardship report tells the story of a tidal wave of generosity which began with small ripples in 1998. As we thank those who began the ripple, we invite others to join us in building “a current that can sweep” through Brooklyn and Queens. There is no time like the present. Together, let us create a wave of hope, and leave a legacy of changed lives and grateful hearts.

Sincerely,

Thomas F. Flood, Executive Director

Tom, what prompted you to choose an Endowment Fund as a vehicle to remember Kathie and Chris? “Kathie always had a special place in her heart for the priests of this Diocese. Working for the Diocese and with the priests that serve our community, certainly had something to do with that. She brought that genuine concern into our home and made it a priority for us all. After the airplane accident in 2001, we wanted to do something as a family, to honor their memory. Knowing Kathie, doing something for the Senior Priests of the Diocese made all the sense in the world. We wanted to do something for these men, and do it in a way that created an opportunity for others to learn more about the great priests that Kathie taught us to know and love. Knowing how fragile life can be, we also wanted something that would endure beyond our lifetimes, and something that others could contribute to and be a part of. We also wanted results immediately. Establishing an Endowment fund in the Foundation allowed us to fulfill all those priorities.

We have been able to do a lot for the men through this Endowment. Our goal has been to supplement the existing programs offered by the Diocese through special social programs, such as trips to plays, museums and sporting events. We have also established a special car service to transport the men to medical, family and pastoral events. The smiles on these priests’ faces, and the gratitude they share warms our hearts. I know that Kathie and Chris are looking down on us smiling.”

6 Charitable Giving Gifts to the Alive in Hope Foundation create a significant and everlasting impact on the Church in Brooklyn and Queens. A gift is made when a donor decides to transfer ownership of something with monetary value to the Foundation, now or at the time of death. A donor may direct the gift to one or more beneficiaries: for example, a parish, school, ministry or the Diocese. Some donors prefer to add their gift to a Fund already established with the Alive in Hope Foundation. The Foundation offers donors a wide variety of options for giving that allow the opportunity to customize gifts meaningful to them and their families, while meeting their financial needs.

Giving Today, Impacting Tomorrow 13 LegacyLegacy Th ? ink yo thropist u need a fortune to become a Philan Think again!

The Alive in Hope Foundation offers many ways to help people meet their giving and financial goals—and you don’t need a fortune to invest to experience the joys and personal growth philanthropy brings. You can establish your own fund or create a fund in memory or honor of a special individual with as little as $10,000. If you wish, you may further advance this fund by contributing at a subsequent time. Philanthropists also have the option of making a contribution to an existing fund at any time. Foundation donor-designated funds are attractive alternatives to private founda- tions, and require no paperwork, legal fees, or other startup costs on your part. You derive immediate tax benefits, and you advise the Foundation’s Board of Trustees as to which charitable organizations, within the Diocese of Brooklyn community (parish, parochial school or a ministry that you have an affinity for) will be the beneficiaries of your fund distributions. The stewardship of this fund may be passed down to subsequent generations, instilling the joys of philanthropy in your family. Funds can be established through outright gifts or a plethora of planned-giving options, including charitable gift annuities. Charitable gift annuities guarantee the annuitant (or annuitants) a lifetime income at attractive rates of return with certain tax advantages. Upon the death of all annuitants, the remainder may be added to an existing fund, used to create your own fund, or it can go to the Foundation outright. The choice is yours. Make the decision to leave a legacy of philanthropy to the future generations of your family and to your Catholic Community. Contact the Foundation today.

14 The Fons Vitae Society acknowledges the many members and friends of the Diocese of Brooklyn for their living leg- acy gifts, and/or their intention to remember the Alive in Hope Foundation, the Diocese, its parishes, schools, and special ministries or a combination, in their estate plans. Membership in Society includes the celebration of an annual Society mass at St. James Cathedral, listing on the Society Honor Roll permanently displayed at the Cathedral, and other acknowledgements.

16 An appointed Board of Directors governs the Alive in Hope Foundation. As representatives of both clerical and lay communities, these Catholic leaders come from parishes and services in the Diocese of Brooklyn. The Board directs its efforts to the sound stewardship of resources under the spiritual guidance and leadership of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. Grants are reviewed, and recommendations made by appointed review committees. Finances are managed and monitored with counsel from professional investment advisors. Assets are invested in socially and morally responsible funds that do not conflict with Church teachings.
