For fans of film music, August is a good month on Classical 101. The American Sound and Exploring Music dig into some great film scores.

Throughout August, enjoy the return of The American Sound’s Summer Festival of American Film Music with selections from classic film scores by composers who helped give Hollywood its unmistakable sound – Bernard Herrmann, Dmitri Tiomkin, Erich Korngold, Franz Waxmann and others. Also, join in a special celebration of works by composers who immigrated to the and contributed to the rich and vibrant mix of traditions that is the American sound – Stravinsky’s Circus Polka, songs by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ernest Bloch’s Poems of the Sea– and more. And enjoy the Classical 101 premiere of Michael Abels’ double concerto Winged Creatures, along with Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and, for gardening season, Barbara Harbach’s fresh and lively Rhapsody Jardine. Join host Jennifer Hambrick for The American Sound, Saturday evenings at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm on Classical 101.

Meanwhile on Exploring Music, Bill McGlaughlin spends the last week of August listening to film scores (and probably eating popcorn!). Music for (silent) film started in France when Saint-Saëns composed an original score for The Assassination of the Duke of Guise (L'Assassinat du duc de Guise, 1908) and Hollywood took it from there. Bill recalls some of his favorite original and arranged scores for many great films: Bernard Herrmann’s work for Citizen Kane and several Hitchcock films; Elmer Bernstein for To Kill a Mockingbird; Henri Mancini’s work on ; Ennio Morricone for various Westerns; and even some singing from . Enjoy Exploring Music weeknights at 6pm.
