The weather was nice, views spectacular around Falls Park with many photo op- portunities. They ate at IHop and said the food was amazing. After a little shopping around town, they headed back home. Overall, a good for all of them. NEW DAWN SUMMER PICNIC This year’s summer picnic was held on June 20th at Centennial Park in Worthington, MN with over 125 people attending. Some individuals participated in the fashion show after supper with yard games, such as rodeo golf, bean-bag-toss and a fabric ball available for everyone to enjoy. The weather started off windy and rainy, but the afternoon was beautiful. We thank each and everyone of you for taking the time to come. We truly enjoy the work we do, and are lucky to be able to work with your loved one. We hope you enjoy the night. These fashion minded individuals dressed in their favorite outfit and walked-the- walk at the NDI Fashion Show. This was part of the summer picnic NDI held in Worthington on June 20, 2019. Jeremiah caught two fish while fishing on Cottonwood Lake and he received a new fishing pole as a prize. Steve had a hook-n-sinker time while jigging on the bottom of Cottonwood Lake. He did not catch a fish, but walked away with a brand new fishing pole. Check out the pic of him fishing over his shoulder? Michael enjoyed the morning being on the water although he did not catch the “Big” one. He enjoyed a delicious lunch with staff, Gail, after fishing. She shared her experience with staff, letting them take the bullhead off the line. FISHING HAS NO BOUNDARIES Event was held on June 22, 2019 at Cottonwood Lake in Cottonwood, MN. This was the 10th annual event for anglers with disability. This event was sponsored by The Cottonwood Area Sportsmen’s Club making it possible for our individuals to fish in pontoons, fishing boats, and from shore. They provided coffee, juice and rolls in the morning, with lunch served at noon. Gifts were handed out to by volunteers to some of the participants. It was an amazing event, which takes time to organize and work. They are in need of more volunteers and boats for future events. If you -are interested, please reach out to one of the following indi-viduals: Brandon Renken at 507-828-4451, or Paul Geihl at 507-530-5530. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    "I could use a shot of confidence to get a word in edgewise, I need to see that silver lining, in those dark and stormy skies, and pray I catch that feeling that I used to know back when, back when I never knew I'd ever need a second wind," John Baumann sings on "Second Wind," a deep cut from his forthcoming album, Country Shade. After having a conversation with the ​ ​ singer-songwriter, it's evident that he tends to look at things with a glass-half-full mentality-complemented by a deeply-ingrained dose of ambition. He is curious how time passes in its unknowable and ever-interesting way, and he's ready for what it's bringing next for him. "'Second Wind' is about digging deep and finding the next gear when you've lost interest or motivation," John says about the track. "It's about the times when I feel like nothing is moving forward, but ultimately really about anyone struggling to get up and get back on the horse." It's a familiar sentiment to most anyone who's felt like they're teetering on the precipice of taking their next step, making their next leap out into the world. John has had a busy last few years - he's a member of The Panhandlers, with fellow Texans Josh Abbott, William Clark Green and Cleto Cordero, and signed on with The Next Waltz, the Texas-based brainchild of legendary songwriter Bruce Robison, for management.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: AFRO-CUBAN BATÁ DRUM AESTHETICS: DEVELOPING INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP TECHNIQUE, SOUND, AND IDENTITY Kenneth George Schweitzer, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2003 Dissertation directed by: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music The Lucumí religion (also Santería and Regla de Ocha) developed in 19th- century colonial Cuba, by syncretizing elements of Catholicism with the Yoruba worship of orisha. When fully initiated, santeros (priests) actively participate in religious ceremonies by periodically being possessed or “mounted” by a patron saint or orisha, usually within the context of a drumming ritual, known as a toque de santo, bembé, or tambor. Within these rituals, there is a clearly defined goal of trance possession, though its manifestation is not the sole measure of success or failure. Rather than focusing on the fleeting, exciting moments that immediately precede the arrival of an orisha in the form of a possession trance, this thesis investigates the entire four- to six-hour musical performance that is central to the ceremony. It examines the brief pauses, the moments of reduced intensity, the slow but deliberate build-ups of energy and excitement, and even the periods when novices are invited to perform the sacred batá drums, and places these moments on an equal footing with the more dynamic periods where possession is imminent or in progress. This document approaches Lucumí ritual from the viewpoint of batá drummers, ritual specialists who, during the course of a toque de santo, exercise wide latitude in determining the shape of the event. Known as omo Aña (children of the orisha Aña who is manifest in drums and rhythms), batá drummers comprise a fraternity that is accessible only through ritual initiation.

    July 2, 2018, Issue 608 The Voice: A Cautionary Tale Voice therapy and vocal rest are sometimes necessary for singers. Country artists including Keith Urban, Lauren Alaina and Patty Loveless have even required surgery to correct polyps or repair burst blood vessels. But what about deejays? For radio professionals whose livelihood is centered on speaking, losing the voice is a nightmare scenario. WSM-FM/Nashville evening personality Darlas Rai lived that nightmare earlier this year. Happily healed and back on the air, Country Aircheck spoke with her and Speech-Language Pathologist Melissa Kirby about proper voice care. Rai first encountered problems after suffer- ing a viral infection eight years ago. After that, she developed what she calls “reverse” laryn- gitis. “When I woke up, I couldn’t talk,” she says. “The more I talked the better my voice Darlas Rai got. By the time I went on the air at night, I had a voice. But I woke up every morning without one.” A doctor visit revealed no polyps, but Rai Salt Life: RCA’s Old Dominion at the Salt Lake City stop of still struggled. “I just chalked it up to getting the 2018 Trip Around The Sun Tour.
