Harvey* This Article focuses on the oft-neglected intersection of racially skewed outcomes and anti-competitive markets. Through historical, contextual, and empirical analysis, the Article describes the state of Hollywood motion-picture distributionfrom its anti- competitive beginnings through the industry's role in creating an anti-competitive, racially divided market at the end of the last century. The Article's evidence suggests that race-based inefficiencies have plagued the film distribution process and such inefficiencies might likely be caused by the anti-competitive structure of the market itself, and not merely by overt or intentional racial-discrimination.After explaining why traditional anti-discrimination laws are ineffective remedies for such inefficiencies, the Article asks whether antitrust remedies and market mechanisms mght provide more robust solutions.

June 18, 2018, Issue 606 Inside View: CMT Music Awards Two weeks ago, CMT GM Frank Tanki noted the network’s larger CMA Fest footprint (CAW 6/4) – one that CMT Music Awards viewers may have noticed extended to the show itself. In a rather conventional sense, great performing is often associated with a sense of interiority, becoming your character, identifying with your role. In that sense, a great performer could become anyone else simply by looking deep within herself. Of course, there’s a long history of performance practices that reject this model. Yet whether it is a matter of embracing or rejecting what is, so to speak, on the inside, there is an overarching belief that great performers are uniquely adept at locating themselves and using that self to build a world around them. It is no surprise then that today we are all expected to be great performers. Our lives are filled the endless capacity to shed one skin for another, to produce multiple cyber-personalities on a whim. We are hyperaware that our outsides are malleable and performative—and that our insides might be an endless resource for reinventing and rethinking ourselves (not to mention the world around us). So perhaps it’s almost too obvious to say that Jibz When I was a youth, say, about 8, I played a game in the Cameron, the mastermind behind Dynasty Handbag, is an incredible woods with my friend Ocean where we pretended to be hookers.

Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the dawn of the studio system. Griffith’s film consolidated and disseminated powerful racist myths to a national audience, helping to solidify white supremacy while providing ideological justification for lynching. While 1915 marks a low point in cinematic depictions of American race relations, much of the latter history of Hollywood film making is similarly problematic when it comes to representations of African Americans. There is, however, an alternative cinematic tradition that has only begun to receive the attention it is due. Just a few years after Birth, an African American film maker named Oscar Micheaux released Within Our Gates (1919), challenging the racism of Birth, and putting forward an alternative understanding of lynching and the brutality of white supremacy. In subsequent years and decades there has been a vibrant tradition of African American independent filmmaking. This course will examine that tradition, focusing on the work of filmmakers ranging from Micheaux to Gordon Parks to Spike Lee to Julie Dash. We will also venture briefly outside of the United States and address film making within the black diaspora. Throughout the course, we will focus on the social critiques posed by various black film makers, the relationships between mainstream and independent cinema, and the power of film as a social force.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • 2019 AIM Program
A Message from ASABE President Maury Salz Welcome to the 2019 Annual International Meeting (AIM) of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in Boston, Massachusetts. I extend a special welcome to first time participants, international attendees and pre-professionals. I am confident you will find the meeting a welcoming and stimulating investment of your time. AIM offers a wide array of opportunities for you to gain knowledge in technical sessions, make new or catch-up with old friends at social events, contribute to the ongoing growth efforts in technical communities, and to celebrate the accomplishments of peers in the awards ceremonies. I highly encourage you to engage in the opening keynote session by GreenBiz’s Joel Makower and the following panel discussion on sustainability and the need for a national strategy, which could alter how we live. We as individuals, and collectively as ASABE, will be challenged to think about how this broader vision of sustainability could fundamentally change our lives and the profession. I want to thank our friends at Cornell University for serving as local hosts and the volunteer coordinators. Students work as volunteers to enhance the experience for all meeting participants and you can locate them by their blue shirts. Please thank them when you have the chance. Boston is rich in history and be sure to take some time to experience what this unique area has to offer. I also encourage you to participate actively in AIM and reflect on how you can advance the Society goals to benefit yourself personally and the people of the world.
