The project takes up the calls by feminist and minority scholars to broaden the literary history of the American West and to unsettle the narrative of conquest that has been taken up to enact a particular kind of imaginary perversely sustained across time and place. That the western heroic vision resonates today is perhaps no significant revelation; however, what is surprising is that their forward echoes pulsate in myriad directions, cascading over the stories of alternative voices, that seem always on the verge of slipping away from our collective memories, of ii being conquered again and again, of vanishing. But a considerable amount of recovery work in the past few decades has been aimed at revising the ritualized absences in the North American West to show that women, Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans and other others were never absent from this particular (his)story. -

Making a Way out of No Way: Zora
ABSTRACT “‘Making a Way Out of No Way’: Zora Neale Hurston’s Hidden Discourse of Resistance” explores how Hurston used techniques she derived from the trickster tradition of African American folk culture in her narratives in order to resist and undermine the racism of the dominant discourse found in popular literature published during her lifetime. Critics have condemned her perceived willingness to use racist stereotypes in her work in order to pander to a white reading audience. This project asserts that Hurston did, indeed, don a “mask of minstrelsy” to play into her reading public’s often racist expectations in order to succeed as an academic and as a creative writer. At the same time, however, she crafted her narratives in a way that destabilized those expectations through use of sometimes subtle and sometimes blatant points of resistance. In this way, she was able to participate in a system that was rigged against her, as a woman and as an African American, by playing into the expectations of her audiences for economic and professional advantages while simultaneously undermining aspects of those expectations through rhetorical “winks,” exaggeration, sarcasm, and other forms of humor that enabled her to stay true to her personal values. While other scholars have examined Hurston’s discourse of resistance, this project takes a different approach by placing Hurston’s material in relation to the publishing climate at the time. Chapter One examines Mules and Men in the context of the revisions Hurston made to her scholarly work to transform her collection of folktales into a cohesive book marketed to a popular reading audience. -

From Barrytown to Ballymun: The Problematics of Space, Class and Gender in Roddy Doyle’s Family (1994) Marcus Free Introduction Helena Sheehan’s historical analysis of Irish television drama identified three enduring problems in its depiction of the urban working-class.1 Most problematically, it tended to conflate working class with ‘lumpen life’, with ‘chronic unemployment, criminality and social welfare dependency, [with] people who did not work’.2 Secondly, it tended to ‘blur and diffuse class tensions’,3 reducing material, social class differences to individual conflicts. Thirdly, it typically located social conflict within the family as an inter- generational and/or gendered phenomenon, pitting the individual against the dead weight of cultural tradition. These were ‘conflicts easier to comprehend than those involving class forces and social institutions’4 in a country governed by Eamonn De Valera’s conservative 1937 Constitution, and where the Catholic Church has wielded considerable, if waning, political and social power since the foundation of the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland) in 1921. Writer Roddy Doyle’s Dublin-set BBC/RTE (Raidio Telifis Eireann) four part co- production Family, broadcast in Ireland and Britain in May 1994, might appear to have reproduced these problems. Its opening episode concentrated heavily on lumpen- proletarian petty criminality, and it clearly located its theme of conflict within the nuclear family by focusing on a physically and psychologically abusive father’s impact on wife © Manchester University Press, 2007. Through the Muck and Mire: Marronage, Representation, and Memory in the Great Dismal Swamp By Kathryn Elise Benjamin Golden A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in African American Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Stephen Small, Chair Professor Ula Taylor Professor Carolyn Finney Professor Lok Siu Spring 2018 Abstract Through the Muck and Mire: Marronage, Representation, and Memory in the Great Dismal Swamp By Kathryn Elise Benjamin Golden Doctor of Philosophy in African American Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Stephen Small, Chair This dissertation is a critical examination of both the history of the Dismal Swamp maroon communities (independent and resistant communities of individuals some would label “runaway slaves”) and of the politics of race and representation of enslaved resistance in public historical narratives and in local Black collective memory. Principally, this is a critical exploration of the legacies of slavery and enslaved resistance evidenced by Black people’s resilience in and around the swamp across time – from maroon resilience through the physical swamp muck and mire, an appealing alternative to bondage, to the present-day resilience of Black community memory of enslaved people’s historical agency, in spite of the metaphysical muck and mire, or the entanglement of race and power that too often silences the narrative of Black resistance. Once recently an extremely understudied and under-researched topic, my research on the history and legacy of U.S. marronage advances the fields of slavery, public history, and collective memory by: (1) connecting the activities of the Dismal Swamp maroons to a hemispheric Black tradition not merely of flight, but organized violence against slaveholding societies as freedom and self-defense; (2) comprehensively clarifying the specificity of U.S. -
