Walter Smith III is widely recognized as an adept Program will contain selections from the following: performer, accomplished composer, and inspired educator. He is or has been a member of several legendary groups including the Terence Blanchard Quintet, Eric Harland's Voyager band, Roy Haynes JAZZ ENSEMBLE II “Fountain of Youth” band, Jason Moran’s Big Freddie Mendoza, director Bandwagon, and the Christian McBride Situation band. Walter has performed all over the world participating in numerous international festivals as well as famed Wilbur H Bird/ Broadway venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Teddy McRae/ In addition, he has shared the stage and/or appeared on Henri Woode recordings with many jazz notables including Roy arr. Sammy Nestico Haynes, Eric Reed, Mulgrew Miller, Joe Lovano, Walter Beasley, Terri Lynne Carrington, and a host of others. To date, Walter has appeared on over 75 recordings that are released worldwide. His debut Ray Brown When You Go recording as a leader was released in 2006, and his latest project Still Casual arr. Geoff Keezer was released in 2014. Walter received a music education degree from the Berklee College of Music, a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music, and a graduate certificate in performance from the Institute Oliver Nelson Miss Fine of Jazz. He is a recently appointed associate professor of jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and endorses D'Addario reeds and John LaBarbera Esperanza accessories and Fred LeBayle mouthpieces.

Walter Smith III is here at Ball State as part of Saxtemberfest, an annual series of events that brings professional saxophonists to campus for recitals, master classes, and concerts.
