The chief manifestations that occurred with her were the movement of objects without contact, the levitation of a table and other objects, the levitation of the medium, the appearance of materialized hands and faces, lights, and the playing of musical instruments without human contact. All these phenomena took place, as we have seen, at a much earlier date with the medium D. D. Home, but when Sir William Crookes invited his scientific brethren to come and examine them they declined. Now for the first time these strange facts were the subject of prolonged investigation by men of European reputation. Needless to say, these experimenters were at first sceptical in the highest degree, and so-called ‘tests’ (those often silly precautions which may defeat the very object aimed at) were the order of the day. No medium in the whole world has been more rigidly tested than this one, and since she was able to convince the vast majority of her sitters, it is clear that her mediumship was of no ordinary type.

PETER JOOSSE* De Arabische medicus en polyhistor Muwaffaq ad-D¯ın ‘Abd al-Lat.ıf¯ ibn Yu¯suf al- Baghda¯d¯ı bijgenaamd Ibn al-Labba¯d, ‘de zoon van de viltmaker’, leefde van 1162 tot 1231. Hij werd geboren in Bagdad en overleed daar ook, maar als een ware arts zonder gren- zen avant-la-lettre reisde hij veel en bracht een groot gedeelte van zijn leven door in Aleppo, Caïro en Damascus, drie belangrijke intellectuele centra. Over zijn leven, opvattingen en werken is tamelijk veel bekend. Hij studeerde onder een groot aantal beroemde leraren, wat destijds gewoon, maar zeker ook vereist was als men een goede positie wilde veroveren binnen het wetenschappelijke circuit. Hij liet twee autobiografische documenten na, waarin hij onverbloemd zijn mening geeft over tijdgenoten (dikwijls medici) en over het werk van voorgangers.1 Ook in zijn overige werk is hij vaak voor die tijd ongebruikelijk persoonlijk: hij registreert bijvoorbeeld zijn fysieke reacties als hij probeert om de grote piramide van Cheops in te kruipen en geeft (buitengewoon onorthodox voor die tijd) toe dat de poging hem boven zijn macht ging.2 We weten hoe en waar ‘Abd al-Lat.ıf¯ werd opgeleid, wie zijn leermeesters en leerlingen waren en waar hij praktiseerde. Uit zijn autobiografieën blijkt dat hij een groot aantal medische werken heeft geschreven.
